BTW that was the second time he asked someone if they really loved him, just before they died (basically at his hand).

Oh man, good point.

So, 30 years later when Belle truly fell in love for him, Rumple was guarded, and though he and Belle really loved one another, he mistrusted her and rejected her pleas for him to believe in their love. He did what Cora had done to him all those years before; he chose power over love, because he was all the more resolved that nothing, absolutely nothing, would stand in the way of his vow to find Baelfire again.

Wow. I’m glad we have this insight into the Rumbelle relationship now, because of this history with Cora!

She only brought up love so he’d change the contract so she wouldn’t owe him anything because Cora refuses to owe people things.

This. Not long before Cora met Rumple, maybe an hour or so at most, she’d said to the King, “You’ve got some nerve disparaging me, you’re selling off your own flesh and blood.” Then Rumple presents her with a contract and she gives him the side eye and says, “My first born child?” She’s not gonna change her opinion on the morality of selling off your own flesh and blood in the space of a couple of hours. I think she was scheming the whole time to find a way to get the power, the adoration, and keep the baby.

Great catch!
