I think he added pages / continue / rewrote some of the pages. He aged the pages then restored it.

1/ Maybe it is job in life to keep the book intact. If the book gets damaged he is compelled to put it to rights.
2/ He knows the book is enchanted and is trying to give it a new ending or his own twist on the stories.

STILL mulling this over but I think it will be important in the future.
