What about time frames though? Hook showed up shortly before EQ cast the curse which means she had already confronted Maleficent and had taken it from her. Did EQ release Maleficent until she actually cast the curse or did she keep her tied up and imprisoned?I’d really love to see it end up being Male. What a great back story that would make! 😀

In my opinion, this theory makes the most sense (but it would, right?). 🙂 Re: time-frames: Either Regina had yet to aquire the dark curse because she was just contemplating her next move to take on her “frenemy,”or Regina had in fact already had her run-in with Maleficent by the time Hook showed up. If Regina had yet to confront Maleficent, then there’s no obstacle and Hook could have gotten the information he sought from Maleficent without any problem. This could have taken place in between the events of Regina showing up at Snow White’s wedding in the pilot (in which she declared her intent to cast the dark curse) and Regina’s actual confrontation with Maleficent in 1×2 “The Thing You Love Most” (in which she finally managed to acquire said curse).

Alternatively, if Regina had already acquired the scroll, then Hook showing up might have happened just after Regina confronted Maleficent in 1×2 but before she managed to kill Henry Sr at least 9 months later (since Snow had to get pregnant first and then have Emma 9 months later on Curse Day) . Even if Maleficent were locked up, Hook might have found away around some guards. He’s a pirate after all. Hook still could have spoken with Maleficent. Yet, maybe Regina didn’t even bother to imprison Malefient, believing herself the most powerful. In fact, Regina stealing the scroll could be what prompted Maleficent to divulge such valuable information to the Captain. Maleficent was dead-set against Regina casting the dark curse, since Maleficent said.

Don’t do this. This…curse. There are lines even we shouldn’t cross. All power comes with a price. Enacting it will take a terrible toll. It will leave an emptiness inside you. A void you will never be able to fill.

In a last-ditch effort to try and stop Regina, Maleficent may have sent Hook to free Belle, but also with the hope of getting Rumple’s dagger for herself. If Maleficent took the powers of the Dark One for herself, she could prevent Regina from casting the dark curse.
