I hope she was referring to Ryan. Tallahassee did a good job of making us understand why Emma thought of Neal as a jerk without actually making him a jerk. If they made him married or pretend to be, that might mess with that balance a bit more then i would like. Besides, didn’t Emma mention a string of bad relationships? Maybe she was talking about one of them?
She could have been talking about another guy and I totally agree about the Tallahasse episode…they did a great job with his character.
One thing that I find interesting is something I heard one of the writers mention. They wanted the sheriff’s character to be Sherlock Holmes…but in the end they couldn’t get the rights to the character so they made him the huntsman. In Tallahassee, Neal mentions the phrase, “on the road” twice, once in the bug, and once in the hotel room. Since that is a nod to the book, On the Road, where the main character, Dean Moriarty, is Neal Cassady lightly fictionalized, and Kerouac has indicated that the Moriarty name is a reference to Sherlock Holmes’ nemisis…that seems too coincidental to be just a random thing. Emma is the new sheriff…the Huntsman who they wanted to be “Sherlock Holmes” character type…and Neal’s name conjures up Moriarty. I didn’t really think about it until today but Emma’s profession is very much like that of the Huntsman…as she was a Bounty Hunter. This is one of the reasons that I think they will find a way to put conflict in the relationship before things get worked out. I’m not sure how they will do that but I think it is a real possibility.
