When this ep first aired, I saw people mentioning the Zeppelin connection to the name on another forum, so googled it a bit, and I reckon it’s a safe bet that that’s where inspiration for the name came from.
On the cover of their 4th album, each member of the group chose a symbol to represent themselves. Jimmy Page designed his own symbol, which had the word “ZOSO” on it. And like Lisa said, there’s also an image on the album cover of a character who looks similar to Zoso on the show.
The group’s iconic song, (one of the most iconic songs in the history of rock music), Stairway To Heaven is on that album. IMO, it’s totally a Rumple theme song.
There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she’s buying a stairway to heaven.
Robert Plant said that when he wrote that first verse. it was as though he wasn’t writing it himself, that some other force had control of the pencil. The group had a rep for having Satanic messages hidden in their music, so people attributed the devil as having helped write the song.
When you consider that in the Onceiverse, the Dark One is the supreme evil (Satanic) force, who seduces Rumple with the promise of having the power he wants, he essentially sells him his own Stairway To Heaven. So his name being Zoso is perfectly fitting IMO.
