I see what you’re saying there PoM, but I am not sure they “need” a major character to die this season.
Such things are good for shock value, but is it good for plot development and characterization? At this point, let’s face it, NO ONE on that ship would mourn Hook dying. There’s a huge fan base, sure, but Emma doesn’t think of him as a friend. We forget the compressed time scale here, but it was barely three days ago he was kicking her out of the way to stab Rumple. With friends like that….you know, the saying.

I do think everyone is going to get closer if they’re working on a common goal. Down the line in NL I could see perhaps that type of storyline playing to more impact, or even Neal dying just when everyone thought he was safe. Yet I feel like they made that mistake with Cora already. It just felt anti-climactic more than surprising and shocking. I think even to the general audience. Guest star often equals dead villain.

What can they do to change things up in a way that WOULD be shocking? That would rearrange a lot of the character relationships? I think making Henry or Neal evil might do it. The Dark One curse might transfer to one of them. Looking at MRJ’s resume, I have to say, he’s no stranger to playing the dark characters. That could be why they tapped him (or maybe it was because he had experience being a hated character? I didn’t watch True Blood so not sure what the fandom thought, but I heard he was a serial killer.)

I do agree though they are pushing Hook very hard. I’m not sure it means something in particular like “he’s dying” or “he’s the main hero now.” It flows from a marketing stand point–he’s a familiar classic character, nice catchphrase (get Hooked) (though horrible fanname, Hookers) and sets up this big arc with Neverland.
