I’d been thinking the past couple of days, since I’ve been researching Dostoyevsky for a project, how much his romantic life kind of resembles Rumplestiltskin’s journey towards Belle.
Wife 1 – She was horrible, totally unsupportive, didn’t understand him at all and basically, never loved him. I think, she also had an affair with a younger man, even though she was dying of TB. (Milah).
In between wife 1 and wife 2 (his true love), you had the mistress; who like wife 1, didn’t understand him, unsupportive and brought out the worst in him (started gambling). The mistress was also only interested in pursuing her own career and left him quickly for a younger man. ie. the mistress would be Cora, minus the younger man.
Then finally, wife 2 comes along and she’s the only one who truly understands him, loves him unconditionally and never stops loving him. And by the time Dostoyevsky got to wife no. 2, he’d been looking for love in all the wrong places. She’s also younger than him but is a perfect match for him. And she brought out the best in him, he stopped gambling and let her handle all the finances and she gave him the things he always wanted, love and a family.
