Disney is going back to the classic novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame for its newest event series. Disney and ABC are developing a show called Esmeralda, which will look at the story of The Hunchback of Notre Dame through the eyes of the eponymous gypsy, according to Deadline.

The series is being written by Evan Daugherty, whose other credits include Killing Season, Snow White and the Huntsman, the upcoming Divergent, and the hotly-debated upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The success of ABC’s Once Upon a Time may be the impetus for developing more stories based on classic novels and popular fairy tales.

Disney’s original animated The Hunchback of Notre Dame was released in 1996, nearly two decades ago. While the original featured voice work by Demi Moore and Kevin Kline, no casting announcements have yet been made for Esmeralda.
