I feel like Neal at his core remains unchanged, even though he’s had to deal with a lifetime of abandonment and fear of rejection. Neal is Baelfire, just with 300 years of extra baggage to deal with. He’s a work in progress, yes, but at his core he remains optimistic, hopeful and loving. Among all the characters, he and Emma probably have the most to be unhappy about, but yet he’s maintained his eternal optimism. Being a dad has completely given his life new meaning and a new direction.
