I think Neal did a little more realm hopping than we think.  Remember this snippet:

I always got the feeling from that little comment that he’s come close before.  Glimpses of Bae here or there and then lost.  Somehow he knew he ended up in “The Land Without Magic”.  I wouldn’t be shocked if one of Bae’s hops was briefly to Oz.
