There was a casting call for a thief that sounded similar to RH so people assumed a recast, but it could be Aladdin.

I like the idea of seeing how the genie got in the lamp and seeing him escape.  Although the “3 wishes” trope is common to westernized versions, the original Aladdin story in the 1001 nights   didn’t have a specific limit of wishes given by the magical creatures that Aladdin encounters.   There was a slave of the lamp and of a ring.  Incidentally, there is a reference in that story to China, so it could be tied to Mulan in some way too.

Disney’s version seems more close to what was done on OUAT, with the 3 wishes and the rules for the wishes. Except, the guy they cast and his look didn’t look like the “good” blue genie who helps Aladdin, but the wicked human guy they trick into taking the genie’s place.

So I could see this either way, that Sydney has powers because he is just a magical creature or that he doesn’t, because he was a human tricked into wishing to take a genie’s place, and once free, would be human again.

I do think Regina didn’t have a magic mirror until Genie wished that on himself, in OUAT version.  Yes, the original Disney version is different, but in OUAT doesn’t that almost go without saying?

Why bother getting the character back if he isn’t going to do something interesting and big? That doesn’t mean he has to have magic, or even solve the transportation problem, but he could have a connection to Neverland or something like that.
