is it possible that rumple simply hasn’t quite let go of his past yet? i mean, he dropped the doll, but maybe some part of him is still holding on to it and so it keeps coming back

I think that could very well be the case. Something must change within Rumple before he can finally let go of the past. Maybe Neal has to return. That way, Rumple could finally get over his cowardice of having let go of his son in “The Return.”
