UGHHHH THE LAST GIF ON THE RIGHT THOUGH

SUCH DELIBERATE CAMERA WORK

Look at Emma’s eyes. They are looking up at someone, and then she looks back down, away from the person. The camera cuts to Hook so we KNOW who Emma is looking at. We already knew she was FACING him at that point – she takes cover with her back to Neal, which has been discussed extensively. It wouldn’t have been hard for them to not include this cut to Hook. It’s not hard to figure out she’s looking at Hook – like I said, her back is to Neal at this point. The camera cut is there because they really want to be THAT obvious.

Emma has experienced and expressed genuine worry for Hook’s safety in this scene. We’ve seen her experience it before (in Tallahassee, both when the giant collapses and the rocks fall on him) but this is different because of all the development their relationship has had since then. She’s surprised, in a way, by her own reaction – by how much she CARES whether he lives or dies. And in a way, for Emma, that SUCKS, because she’s used to looking out for only herself, and has been learning throughout this entire series how to look out for Henry, too, and now her parents. Now, this PIRATE has somehow become one of the people she needs to look out for, too – one of the people she truly cares about whether they live or die. Someone she needs to protect. As much as she tries to brush off the kiss as a one-time thing, or tries to convince herself that Henry is the only love she has room for in her life, Hook has somehow created a spot in her heart for himself, and she didn’t even realize it for real until THIS MOMENT.

She realizes she TRULY cares here, and as surprised as she is that she was able to do the magic to save them…she’s also surprised to find that without planning it, and despite her best efforts to resist it…she cares about what happens to Hook. She doesn’t WANT him to die, and wouldn’t HOPE FOR IT in any capacity or any situation. That’s easy to tell from this small but important moment.
