Our shipmates ARE SO CRUEL (in a good way)
Warning: you will have many feelings from this.
He was forgetting her.
Slowly. In degrees.
First, it was her voice. He couldn’t hear it anymore. The way it would rise and ring with authority when she was giving them orders, the way it fell and softened when she was talking to people she loved, the way it turned breathy and diffused like smoke in the air when she informed him (quite rightly) that he couldn’t handle it.
Soon, it was other things. The exact green of her eyes, the curve of her lips as she smiled (All too rarely. He hoped she was smiling now. Wherever she was.), the feel of her fingertips as they brushed his when she took his flask from him.
It had been ten months and as he stood on the prow of his ship, watching the sea move in her slow, rhythmic dance, he wondered what it would be like if he let her fade away. Let the tide of time sweep her memory from him. Let her face reduce to a shadow, a flash of blonde hair and twinkling eyes. It wasn’t as though he was ever going to see her again.
The thought sent a stab of pain through his gut.
No.
He had promised.
“There’s not a day that will go by, that I won’t think of you.”
And he would keep it.
