Jenna B – I too read that argument about what the SFers had to say about that gif set, and calling Hook a rapist again! That argument is, in my humble opinion, ridiculous. He kissed her, he didn’t try to hold her down and didn’t resist when she pushed him away.
Nobody was calling Hook a rapist. Nobody is saying that Hook was trying to force himself on Emma. What I did write was that the phrase he used “I can make you” can be interpreted as a bit aggressive and threatening. I even put in the imagine it from Emma’s point of view.
She lives alone with her child in her apartment, she’s in her pyjamas. A strange man turns up at her door and knows her name, even though she doesn’t know his. He tells her he “can make” her remember him then he lunges at her and kisses her
Sometimes Hook’s dialogue is written where it sounds like he’s telling Emma what’s going to happen rather than giving her a choice. His “When I win your heart, and I will” comment being a prime example. His “I can make you” line followed by the kiss can be interpreted as having rapey connotations as has other Hook’s dialogue in season 2. That’s not to say that was the intention. Had the line been written as “I’ll try and help you to remember” or “I know how I can help you remember” then followed by the kiss then it wouldn’t seem such an aggressive turn of phrase. It was the choice of wording followed by the action that makes it have rapey connotations not that Hook was planning on forcing himself on Emma.
If a random bloke came up to you in the street saying he “can make you” do something then he lunges forward and kisses you, I doubt the first thought in your head would be “maybe I should listen to him”.
