I don’t think his redemption arc has been easy. Nothing is ever easy when it comes to redemption. Look at Regina and Rumpelstiltskin. Like JMo said, “..he keeps on surprising her [in a good way].” He saved Charming’s life, didn’t take Pan’s death, led a rescue to save Neal (his romantic rival). Each episode is a stepping point in his redemption as a hero. It’s a journey.
Hook’s been very selfless since the beginning of this season. Nothing has ever been about himself. The moment on board the Jolly Roger, toasting Neal, Hook mourned him too but that moment was all about Emma and giving her the proper closure she needed.
