another look at the Echo Caves
my favorite part:
Then what ends up happening is that Emma, even though she makes it across the bridge to him, in order to actually free him, she has to acknowledge all of the pain she’s been hoarding for almost a decade and reveal that she wished he was dead so that she didn’t have to face him and all of the past and she could just move on a lot easier. The writers basically made her have to take the tough way and deal with her demons, so the act of free Neal, was actually freeing herself.
Not only, do you have Emma’s past (Neal) on one end of the cave and Hook (her future) on the other, and on top of that, Emma confronting her past (Neal) so she can finally move on. Emma doesn’t open up very often and talk about her feelings, so for her, to be put in a position where she has to face them, is awesome. I don’t see why SF sees this scene as something positive or great for their ‘ship. It’s really not.
She’s confronting her feelings, what holding onto Neal has done to her. It’s prevented her from moving on and finding happiness again, and Neal basically represents, pain. He caused her pain and continued to cause her pain, even after their reunion. The way the scene was written, it couldn’t have been done better. It was perfect.
