Don’t think Anderson gave a reason for her death in the original. In a way back version of my headcanon, I had the JR being the ship that killed her.
A and E rarely do Evil for the sake of Evil so I bet the merfolk do have a back story as to why they hate humans so much. Liam killing their Queen would do the trick. But Ariel knows it was an accident and refuses to take part in the drownings and is exiled out of her kingdom.
