September 11, 2013 at 6:48 pm #209247RumplesGirlKeymasterRumple’s mom is probably Jane and the conversation went like this:
Colin: my, what a fine strapping baby boy. What shall we call him?
Jane: I like Jeff
Colin: no no no. No son of mine shall be Jeff. I like Rumplestiltskin. It builds character.
Jane: …no
Colin: And why ever not?
Jane: the other boys will tease him
Colin: GOOD! Rumplestiltskin it shall be.
*5 years later*
YoungRumple: Mama, why don’t the other children want to play with me?

I’m now thinking that 308 will be PP centric, and 311 will be Rumple centric as he and PP come together in a final showdown that results in the undoing. 308 is too soon for another Rumple centric, considering we’re already getting one in 304, so if they’re casting his father for 308, he must play into someone else’s flashback, and the brothers theory would totally fit.
I think one complaint people have had is slightly contrived family connections. Some are going to continue to play out naturally but tying everything back to Rumple in such a direct way gets to almost jump the shark territory (and hey they are on a boat in the ocean).
There’s no argument that the family tree is a hot mess. To quote MRJ: “It’s a %&$#ing wreath.” I think making Rumple and PP brothers would actually be an epic way to cap off the expansion of the family tree though. Once we get that, no more crazy, surprise, distant relatives.
If Rumple’s whole, cursed life, comes down to him having been doomed from the moment he was born because of a jealous older brother, I think it’d be a good way for them to come full circle for him. They could reveal the reason he was screwed from the getgo, and show the end of his cursed life when the Dark One becomes undone. That puts Rumple in a whole new mindset where he has to, (or rather, gets the chance to) redefine himself and move forward without the burden of that curse that’s ruled his life since the day he was born.
Considering that Barrie gave PP a younger sibling, which is what caused him to turn his back on the normal world for good, I’d be surprised if K&H don’t do the same. And if they’re gonna give that influential role of the sibling to someone, it should be someone with significance to their own story. Rumple fits perfectly IMO.

After this, if they end up in Oz, for example, they can make it so Regina or Rumple or even Cora knew of the land and had connections, but not family ones.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"September 12, 2013 at 9:39 am #209317SlurpeezParticipantIt would be very interesting to see how Rumplestiltskin got his rather unusual name. Sadly, I agree that based on his unfortunate character description, Rumple’s dad could rather meanly give his son a name he knows would cause his kid lifelong teasing. Perhaps that is even why Rumple now traffics in names.
I was reading the origin and meaning of the name, and it’s quite interesting. According to Wikipedia:
The name Rumpelstilzchen in German means literally “little rattle stilt”. (A stilt is a post or pole which provides support for a structure.) A rumpelstilt or rumpelstilz was the name of a type of goblin, also called a pophart or poppart that makes noises by rattling posts and rapping on planks. The meaning is similar to rumpelgeist (“rattle ghost”) or poltergeist, a mischievous spirit that clatters and moves household objects. (Other related concepts are mummarts or boggarts and hobs that are mischievous household spirits that disguise themselves.) The ending -chen is a German diminutive and designates something as “little” or “dear”, depending on context.
I like that the German suffix “-chen” can mean dear as in “dearie” 🙂
As to Peter Pan being Rumple’s long-lost brother, I have mixed feelings. While I could see Rumple being a Lost Boy as a child, I think adding another branch to an already ladened family tree could be a bit much.
Maybe instead of 3×8 being about another family connection, it could just be about little Rumple’s time in NL as a Lost Boy. Since we’re going to see Rumple’s father, we might just get a glimpse of young Rumple’s unhappy home life before Rumple ran away to NL. Maybe that is when he meets PP for the first time. I wonder who would play young Rumple; whoever it is would need to be a tremendous child actor to come close to measuring up to Robert Carlyle’s amazingness.

Then again, if they’re casting his father, then they have to find someone to play little Rumple anyway.
Now maybe they want to show little Rumple just to establish that he really understands where PP comes from, that sense of being abandoned so young that you barely remember the people you thought were supposed to love you.

September 12, 2013 at 11:07 am #209342angiebelleParticipantI agree- Rumple having been to Neverland as a child is just too much! I’d prefer it wasn’t the case. However, I’m not one of those Oncers who threatens to stop watching the show if something happens- I’ll go along for the ride whatever the case may be.

Yea, I don’t think Rumble was a lost child either.
