This was a fabulous ep! Tore my heart into pieces, gave me warm fuzzies, made me wanna both laugh and cry!
Yeah, I thought I would be the only one. I completely hated that as well. I mean, her character was not the most likeable once you found out that she had been manipulating them all, but when she realized that what Henry had said was true, it was awesome. I finally saw her have an actual character instead of being either purposely oblivious and happy or righteously dignified. Her eyes held some real emotion and when she stood in front of Henry and told him to run, I felt it was for his safety and not to keep him away from the Lost Ones out of spite. I stopped and thought ‘Hmm. I wonder what was up with her? I wonder what lead her onto the path that she is on? After all, it’s unfair to only get Greg’s backstory when she obviously seems to have something going on. She has to have some sort of tale.’
Then Rumpelstiltskin came…*sigh* I love Rumpel, but I have never been so unhappy to see him in a scene. When Tamara started to beg, it really felt genuine. She almost reminded me of a child. When he ripped out her heart, it felt more horrible than a lot of other things he’s done. It felt as though he’d wasted character potential. It also felt as though he’d taken revenge on a person who’s crimes against him had actually been rendered null and void (which is kind of true, even though he didn’t know that).
I’m wondering if we might still have a Tamara flashback at some point, showing how she was recruited for THO. It’s a pretty big plot point that needs explaining, and I’d figured that if either of GOAT died straight up, it would have been Greg, because we have his story already. If the theory of Tamara being Marian and Robin’s child proves true, we may well get some more backstory on her as they develop Robin some more. Also, assuming they’re gonna elaborate more on how PP communicated with agents of THO in our world, then that might go some way to developing Tamara’s backstory a bit more.
I agree that Tamara had a couple of moments were she had flashes of actual emotion, actual doubt, that almost made me feel sorry for her. It’s an interesting dynamic that she has with Rumple in that very, brief scene IMO, and I’m not really surprised he killed her.
Tamara: Look, Mr Gold, I didn’t know who I was working for. I’m sorry about Neal. I’m so sorry.
Rumple: I know. You were merely a pawn.
Tamara: Can you forgive me?
Rumple: No.Rumple’s an expert on pawns, he’s turned people into them. But he always gives people a choice when they deal with him. Sure, he influences them, but at the end of the day, they know the rules, and their eventual actions are their own choice, as are the consequences. So when he looked at Tamara, apologising and begging, he was probably thinking, “No matter how you were played, you still had a choice, and you chose to kidnap my grandson and kill my son.” So in his eyes, she deserved what she got.
Also, Rumple himself has potentially been a pawn in PP’s larger game, or he’s at least a pawn of the prophecy, if not directly PP, and I think he might be starting to wonder about that a bit now that he’s been lured back into the deathtrap that is NL. He’s never denied that he’s done bad things, he considers himself unlovable because of it. So even if he is someone’s pawn in some way, he’s still owning all his bad deeds. And he’s got it in his head that the only way his story can end is with his death in the near future. So of course Tamara needs to own her deeds too, and if death is her fate and punishment as well, then so be it.
My least favorite would probably be……..I honestly don’t have a least favorite for this episode! I am curious about how Robin Hood knows that Rumple let him live. I was under the impression that he and Marian didn’t even know Rumple fired the arrow at them. Must be more to that story that we haven’t seen yet 🙂
I do hope there’s some more to that story where he finds out that Rumple was gonna shoot him in the woods, because if not, Belle is the one he owes for having set him free from the castle.

That was weird for me. It’s like they tweaked that story just a titch so that now RH is forced to help out Nealfire. We know RH pays his debts but I would say he owes Belle far more than he owes Rumple.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"September 30, 2013 at 9:04 am #213060KebParticipantThat whole episode was amazing. Yes, there are some threads that we desperately need to see connected, but by Manhattan it was pretty clear that even if Rumple and Bae hadn’t seen each other since their parting at the portal, they’d had some knowledge of one another’s doings in the interim. And we have to find out how MAP got back together. And…well, many many things to look forward to in the coming months!
I teared up when Henry took his leap of faith (but was simultaneously applauding Emma’s same). And Rumple telling Emma off…well, he’s played her like a violin before, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he was simply giving her what she needed to get Henry–as a backup should his plan go awry.
I’m slamming my head trying not to ship Mufire but OMG their scenes together. Poor Mulan…all her potential ships love other people 🙁 (And I’m not giving up on Swanfire, no matter how awesome Hook is.)
The only thing I hated about the episode was the lack of Belle. Come on, A&E, it’s bad enough you left her behind. You promised she wouldn’t be forgotten.
Keeper of Belle's Gold magic, sand dollar, cloaks, purple FTL outfit, spell scroll, library key, copy of Romeo and Juliet, and cry-muffling pillow, Rumple's doll, overcoat, and strength, and The Timeline. My spreadsheet: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6r8CySCCWd9R0RUNm4xR3RhMEU/view?usp=sharing

I took it as RH owes him for sparing his life after he stole from him. Not anything like saving him because he could have killed him and he didn’t.
September 30, 2013 at 1:52 pm #213107angiebelleParticipantI thought this episode was a really great opening for the season. Although I doubt it will be my favorite in the long run, it did really well at setting things up. We got our first real taste of Neverland. I’m loving the whole running on belief thing already. I do think I ODed on the spoilers, and I’m glad the press doesn’t get advanced screenings every time because I have trouble resisting what they write! I already knew a lot of the twists and turns in advance, although I still enjoyed watching. I’m more excited for next week’s, though, when we really get to delve into how Neverland works.
The banter among those on the ship was great- I’ve been wanting to see them address more of those issues since the curse broke.
I’ve seen stories in which emotions affected the weather before, so it wasn’t completely unexpected. I’m still trying to decide if Emma jumping in the water was incredibly brave or foolhardy! At any rate, it worked- everyone banded together, and the storm stopped. I like how Emma is going to be the leader- she is the one who gets along the best with the greatest number of fellow travelers. For the most part, Regina was surprisingly cooperative- snarky, but still trying to help in the only way she knows how. And I almost liked Hook here- although I still want Emma to end up with Neal. I love how Neal meant something to Hook too- I’m hoping that once they both learn Neal survived, Hook is glad as well. I really don’t want to see a huge catfight love triangle.
It was funny to hear Emma actually state that Snow and Charming are the same age as her! I did think saying everything was their fault was a little harsh though.
Why did no one administer CPR after they rescued Emma? They just stared at her!
There is a lot of disagreement about Neal among fans, but I like him. I might have a weakness for love stories. I loved the interaction between Mulan and Neal- the reference to Mulan’s movie was great and how he explained that their stories are legends in our world. I’ve been waiting for someone to point that out! I loved Mulan calling Neal out on his issues and helping him to use the crystal ball. I loved that Neal wants desperately to get back to Emma.
How did Neal know his father had a castle? They were still in a house when he left.
It’s funny- several of us were trying to figure out what it was that Neal was holding in the behind the scenes pics from the castle scene…Rumple’s cane or a magical item…turns out we were both right! 😀
Robin Hood squatting in Rumple’s castle was great- but what happened to Marian? And why did he say he owed *Rumple*? How’d he know he let him go? Shouldn’t he say he owes *Belle*? I was disappointed they didn’t take advantage of a chance to bring her up. Since she was not in the premiere, I was really hoping she would at least be referenced. As much as I loved the ep, I missed Belle greatly- but I’m biased.
Rumple was quite intense this ep. Robert was right- yet another version of the character. He’s colder, darker, more angry. I was initially worried when I heard he was going to abandon the JR crew pretty fast, but I found that while I didn’t think it was the best decision, I appreciated the way he explained it. He absolutely had a point about Emma, and he didn’t taunt her or snark at her. I have to say, I love the combination Gold/Rumple look he is sporting now. He may be 20 years older than me, but he looks smoking in the leather!
I’m still not fully on board with the Rumple was a Lost Boy or Pan’s brother theories. I’m not keen on the idea of Rumple having been to Neverland as a kid. However the question remains- is the little doll a reminder of Bae or a reminder of Rumple’s childhood? I could see it being either at this point.
I have a hunch Pan is going to be a fascinating villain. The creepiest, most dangerous villains are those who play manipulative mind games. That’s how most cruel people operate in real life. The casting was perfect. I have to admit, though, that I’m still not sure how I feel about a villainous Peter…part of me thinks it’s an awesome twist on his story and can’t wait to learn more, but because I have a soft spot for the stage musical version, there is another part of me that misses the heroic Peter…the one who crows and exclaims, “I am youth! I am joy! I am freedom!”
I was surprised they killed off Greg and Tamara so quickly, but I never cared much for the characters. I think they came across as strictly plot devices to get Henry to Neverland. You still have to wonder how on earth Pan and the Lost Boys created all of the workings of The Home Office and convinced two adults to follow through. I loved how Henry snarked to Greg and Tamara about how foolish they were.
Overall, the episode is a great introduction to what I think may just be the best season yet!
September 30, 2013 at 9:21 pm #213161timespacerParticipantIt’s good to be back! I liked everything in this episode. If I had to pick a favorite, I guess it would be the scene of Emma giving birth. I thought Jennifer Morrison’s expression was amazing. I also liked the symmetry that her first line in the episode (other than screaming) was “I can’t be a mother” and her last line (to Regina) began “I’m a mother.”
September 30, 2013 at 9:47 pm #213169highwaymanParticipantThe best part was probably Neal opening up to Mulan.
The stuff on the ship with Emma having a dig at her parents ‘charming-ness’ was pretty funny too.
negative – Henry, the actor, God bless him, but the kid is still too wooden…can’t seem to properly express emotions.

I was all, “If they’re not paying attention to you screaming, what makes you think they’ll see you jump, you fool?!” LOL But I do think it was brave. She was remembering what Rumple had said to her about taking a leap of faith, and she literally took one.
I love how Neal meant something to Hook too- I’m hoping that once they both learn Neal survived, Hook is glad as well. I really don’t want to see a huge catfight love triangle.
THIS! I need to see Neal and Hook interact so bad it hurts! I love that he kept his sword, and that he’s mourning his loss as well.
How did Neal know his father had a castle? They were still in a house when he left.
This bugged me, but I’m willing to chalk it up to them having needed Neal to know about the castle, and they were hoping no one would remember that he never lived in the castle, because I doubt there’ll ever be an explanation for it.

That was brilliant!

I’ve heard some people say it is because Neal read Henry’s book and Rumple *is* in the book, at least parts of his story. It would make sense that Belle’s story might be in there, and the Skin Deep part of that takes place inside his castle.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"September 30, 2013 at 11:35 pm #213196PheeParticipantAh, could be! I’m happy with that explanation.
