Sounds like Beowulf’s tale may be coming to Once Wonderland:
For Once Upon a Time in Wonderland episode 1.03, the role of Grendel is being cast. Grendel is an ogre-like creature who is a threat to Alice and the Knave.

[adrotate group="5"]August 15, 2013 at 7:16 am #205012PheeParticipantNow there’s a source I hadn’t expected them to go to for inspiration!
Grendel is one of three antagonists, along with Grendel’s mother and the dragon, in the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf (AD 700–1000). Grendel is usually depicted as a monster, though this is the subject of scholarly debate. In the poem, Grendel is feared by all but Beowulf.
The poem Beowulf is contained in the Nowell Codex. As noted in lines 105–114 and lines 1260–1267 of Beowulf, Grendel and his mother are described as descendants of the Biblical Cain. Beowulf leaves Geatland in order to find and destroy Grendel, who has been attacking the mead-hall of Heorot, killing and eating anyone he finds there. Grendel attacks the hall after having been disturbed by the noise of the drunken revellers. One cryptic scene in which Grendel sits in the abandoned hall unable to approach the throne hints that his motives may be greed or revenge. After a long battle, Beowulf mortally wounds Grendel by ripping his arm off. Grendel dies in his cave under the swamp. There, Beowulf later engages in a fierce battle with Grendel’s mother, over whom he triumphs. Following her death, Beowulf finds Grendel’s corpse and removes his head, which he keeps as a trophy. Beowulf then returns to the surface and to his men at the “ninth hour” (l. 1600, “nōn”, about 3 p.m.). He returns to Heorot, where he is given many gifts by an even more grateful Hrothgar.

"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"August 15, 2013 at 12:00 pm #205051ClessidorParticipantI’m not surprised that they include the Beowulf epic into the OUAT universe. Even if I haven’t expected that we will see Grendel in OUAT in Wonderland.
But what surprises me is the fact that they doesn’t use an alias for Grendel like they normally did.
hmm now I wonder if this will give a chance that we will also see some other characters from the Germanic Heroic Age like Weland the smith in the future.

Either Grendel really is coming OUATinWL or Grendel is an alias for a character that has resemblances to Grendel but is not really Grendel.

I think it could come up, but I think it is probably a code for another character, like Heidi was Wendy. Then again, what?

Then they’d have specified it’s a voice acting role, wouldn’t they? I don’t think there’s been any humanoid interpretation of the Jabberwocky; Burton’s in particular bore similarities to a dragon. For Grendel, on the other hand, that seems to be the rule.
But yes, if that’s not THE Grendel they’re casting then it necessarily will have to be another well known monster, because Adam and Eddy, when talking about Robin Hood’s role in Lacey, were very clear that they’re much more interested in bringing established characters from other tales than creating random peasant/thief/whatever to interact with their cast. It defeats that point to use the name of a well-known character for the casting call of a nobody.

Question: I’d like some Once Upon a Time in Wonderland scoop, please. —Mason
The Once spin-off will, in its third episode, sic no less than Beowulf‘s Grendel on Alice and The Knave. Envisioned (via an actor in prosthetics) as a “large, warted, ogre-like beast,” the cannibalistic Grendel will pose a mortal threat to its dinner the genie-seeking pair — though in typical Once fashion, there is more to this beast than meets the eye. But don’t go brushing up on your Old English just yet. “It’s a wink-and-a-nod, as opposed to a real deep-dive into Beowulf,” says series cocreator Adam Horowitz of the creature’s clash with Alice.
