After my first watch, the only nit I really have to pick is that the problem of Charming being stuck there was so easily solved. Rumple being able to make a potion to save him felt just as plot device-y as Blue and her potion to change Lacey back into Belle, and because it’s ended this way, the whole of Charming’s little plot just feels anti-climactic
I agree. The whole poison plot line, in the end, wasn’t for Charming at all but for other reasons. It did nothing really to advance his character and it never really felt like he was in any danger. And then at the last second, oh lo and behold: take the water with you until Rumple can create a cure! I rolled my eyes.
Now that I’ve had some time to rewatch it, this is probably one of my favorite episodes of the season because it finally answered questions. Question answering episodes always tend to be good.
FAVORITES
Rumple as a kid (my poor heart)
The Spinters were funny
I love that Rumple gives Neal the box and agrees not to do magic. Actions are what the heroes need to see that Rumple is changing, not words.
And I love that Neal trusted Rumple enough to give him back the box (and MRJ and Bobby just knocked it out of the park with their conversations. *sigh* I do love my Rumple and Neal)
“I’m not going in with just my good looks” (this line did things to me)
I’m really glad that it was the parents who ended up in Skull Rock with Henry (side note : ABC, get over yourself. Either write fair press releases or just stop trying altogether)
Creepy Shadow was super creepy. His “you broke the rules!” WOW
DIDN’T LIKE
The DarlingFire reunion did fall flat for me. I was expecting more.
A lot of character history being swept under the rug, like KFC said. Pan and Hook; Wendy and Baelfire; any Hook and Darling connections. This is the NL arc and I’d really like to know how all those pieces fit together. We still don’t know what work Hook was doing for PP, we don’t know how Wendy got to NL, we don’t know how PP and Tink know each other; and we don’t know Tink and Hook’s history.
Poison plot device was plot devicey.

Not really sure because this episode was a tad disappointing, but good nonetheless…so a good moment was the JR8 somewhat working together.
Regina and Emma combining their magic.
Regina, Emma, Neal attempting to convince Henry.
Rumple finally confronting Papa Pan.
Dislikes:
Rumple’s father Malcolm/Peter Pan, and everything he did this episode.

Oooh, there’s no Pan in sight, Team Brothers is falling sharply behind. It looks like the spinsters are making an appearance and OH! TeamFellowOrphan is coming up front for the win! Wait! Wait a minute folks…Mini Imp is giving the doll a name and TeamImaginaryPan has come up from the right and taken the lead with FellowOrphan following closely behind. What’s that? I’ve been informed that a magic bean has been thrown onto the track! TeamBrothers and FellowOrphan have suffered extreme injury and are dropping out of the gaaaame. Looks like it’s just ImaginaryPan in for the win folks…But…Oh, my. The question of youth has come in and is flanking ImaginaryPan on his right side! Will he make it? Will he make it? Noo! No! Oh you have to see this folks. The underdog, DaddyPan has come out of nowhere and is obliterating the competition. He’s gooing. Gooing. YES! YEEEES! DaaddyyyPaaaan has crossed the finish line and is out of there!
…It’s been a good race, ladies and gents. One that will truly go down in fairytale history.—————————————————–
Favorite Stuff:Literally EVERYTHING. This has been one of my favorite episodes in forever, but if I’m going to be specific:
Young Rumpel. Cute.
The flashback. Yes all of it.
The DaddyPan reveal. I was secretly fond of this one, but didn’t think it would happen, because it might have been a bit implausible. Much to my surprise, it happened and was nicely executed. The tears in Pan’s eyes when he watched Rumpel being taken away. He was a jerk, but at least it seems that some part of him cared.
Regina and Rumpel actually being nice to each other. I may be the only one, but I felt it so cute when Regina apologized for rubbing it in that Neal was dead. I also liked their other little exchanges this episode.
Rumpel’s line about going in with nothing but his good looks It was perfect. Especially with Hook and Chariming’s follow up.
Neal believing Rumpel, finally.

That was plain awesome is what that was.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"November 18, 2013 at 1:16 am #224655sweetgrassParticipantI liked the episode overall, while I agree that it was a little disjointed.
Oddly while I felt for kid Rumple, it did not make me feel bad for adult Rumple. Adult Rumple made me mad because he carried on the family dynamic of: 1) refusing to move and getting a fresh start (had he done that Milah might have stayed) and 2) abandoning his son.
To me, it is hard to believe that Malcolm becomes Pan. Malcolm reaked of desperation and did not seen that bright. Pan is brilliant and in control. It is very odd. It’s hard to reconcile the two as the same person. I can do this with Little Rumple, Cowardly pre-Dark Rumple and the Dark One. The trajectory is there.
Robbie Kay knocked it out of the park. That kid is an amazing actor.
I am about to commit heresy on this board, but I think Rumple and Regina would sizzle as a couple. I would like to see them together.
The casting department did a great job with Rumple and Daddy Malcolm.
I liked Skull Island.
I liked that Hook didn’t try to push to stay with Emma and was willing to stay behind with Tink. I really hope we get Hook and Tink’s backstory, as well as Hook and Pan. Again this is Hook, Pan and Tink’s fairytale so we should get a lot more of them, but I think TPTB chose to sacrifice all that to give Rumple his daddy time. Having said that I did like the Rumple Pan confrontation.
I didn’t like how gullible Henry was.
Keeper of Hook and Emma's smoldering first kiss, a certain Pirate's sauciness, the Evil Queen's snarkiness, Grumpy's gruffness and a drop of true love to make it all go down smooth.
November 18, 2013 at 1:23 am #224658theeviloneParticipantI loved everything, the twists the turns Rumple’s tragic story. Robbie Kay ‘s acting all amazing. I love this show so much.
Least favorite, Rumple ending up in a box and and that we need to wait 2 freaking weeks to see how he gets out of there.
November 18, 2013 at 2:44 am #224673kfchimeraParticipant” I’m sorry but I laughed out loud when Emma ran into the protection spell wall, flipped upside down, landed on the ground with a thud and Neal says “Are you okay?” like she just took a small stumble.
I guess the flip itself was kind of funny. Now if he had said “You’ve fallen, and you can’t get up?” like those infomercials for the medic alert bracelet, then I’d have laughed.
I didn’t realize “Are you ok” is exclusively reserved as a phrase for small stumbles, but maybe that’s cultural. More interesting though–look at Rumple’s shadow, well hello there, shadow that’s supposed to be cut off!
(I came across that GIF and had to share that shadow thing, because I remember how obsessively we looked for people’s shadows back in the “who is pan, killipan, nealfirepan, felixpan ” days…..we needn’t have bothered, they aren’t that meticulous.

November 18, 2013 at 5:54 am #224682PriceofMagicParticipantThis episode had me transfixed. It was brilliant. Poor Rumple!
Favourite:
Rumple’s backstory
The Malcolm is Pan reveal and how Pan actually looked like he cared for Rumple as little Rumple was being carried off by the shadow.
Rumple actually gets his impish giggle from Malcolm.
Rumple’s good looks line (Interesting since in his phone call to Belle he described himself as an “ugly man”)
Every scene containing Robert Carlyle and/or Robbie Kay. Two brilliant actors.
Least Favourite:
The two weeks from tonight announcement-I need the next episode now!
No Felix- What was Felix doing if he wasn’t at the camp and wasn’t with Pan?
Neal not trusting Rumple- I want to like Neal and liked him better after last week but COME ON! Neal just be nice to Rumple! Please!
Rumple being trapped in Pandora’s box- I want Rumple to be free! I wonder through if Rumple represents hope since he’s the only thing in the box and he’ll be released.
Neal telling Rumple that he will help Charming because of being family and that’s what family do- That was where I disliked Neal the most this episode. Rumple can’t get TWO MINUTES ALONE with Belle without Snowing interrupting, yet Rumple has to help Charming out of the goodness of his heart. How about Snowing leave RumBelle alone, that should have been the trade!
All magic comes with a price!

I noticed that on my re-watch. You can see it as he starts to walk up the stairs, too. Like, the guy is talking about how only people who can’t cast a shadow can get through the barrier, and there’s his freaking shadow right there. *sigh*
The Malcolm is Pan reveal and how Pan actually looked like he cared for Rumple as little Rumple was being carried off by the shadow.
The way Robbie played it, I think that Malcolm did regret letting Rumple go, but only in that brief moment, and then he got over it pretty quickly.
Neal telling Rumple that he will help Charming because of being family and that’s what family do.
That’s not what Neal said. “When we get back to SB, you’re gonna save David because it’s the right thing to do, no deals, no favours, understand.” He mentioned nothing about Rumple doing it because Charming is family, he was just saying that when you save someone’s life, you do it because it’s the right thing to do, not for your own personal gain of any kind. Rumple wanted to make a deal where Neal compromised his integrity and Rumple got token forgiveness in exchange for saving Charming’s life. Neal wasn’t having any of that, because you shouldn’t use someone’s life and death situation to get something for yourself. I admire the hell outta him for having put Rumple in his place like that.
November 18, 2013 at 6:21 am #224688PriceofMagicParticipantOkay I couldn’t remember exactly what Neal said to Rumple but the fact remains that Rumple can’t get two minutes alone with Belle without Snowing interrupting.
