To me all this is pretty selfish and a Regina and Rumplestiltskin like mistake. Neal rushing to put that key in after knowing it was a trap by Zelena was not an act of heroism, it was an act of stupidity and he paid for it. To me making him flawed at the end, makes Neal’s death more interesting.
Neal already had flaws, but the way they had him instantly going for the dark magic wasn’t a newly revealed flaw so much as it was a completely OOC move which just didn’t make sense. He’s NOT selfish as a general rule, the guy has made a habit out of sacrificing himself for the good/safety of others, so him just using dark magic with no thought for the consequences was ridiculous. It was also ridiculous how they tried to make it like it was only in the moment when he “died” that he had a revelation about selfless sacrifice, because like I said, he’s done just that multiple times before.
I also disliked how that turn of events made Belle OOC as well, because she would have read up on the price of that magic and not just gone running off to do the dark magic totally blind. They made both characters act OOC for plot reasons, and it bugged me. Both characters also had some great moments in this ep, but that was a big, glaring, “what were the writers smoking and do they really expect me to buy it” moment for me with them both.

Neal and Belle should’ve known better with magic this serious. However I am OK with good-hearted characters having a moment of weakness. Neal and Belle when presented with the permanent separation from the people they love and the life they were supposed to have, made them go a little nutty.
March 31, 2014 at 7:28 am #257218RedParticipantLiked that Rumple chose Neal over the dagger 🙁 That the necklace finally reappeared and what Belle said about it. When Emma and Neal were joking together & the OutlawQueen scenes.
That CaptainFire scene was soooo contrived, forced. FAKE and why make it seem like Neal is suddenly having some revelation about sacrifice? He has sacrificed himself multiple times. I think it was out of character for him to use that key so hastily too.
ugh my heart. Neal 🙁
March 31, 2014 at 8:34 am #257239RumplesGirlKeymasterI still don’t know what to say.
I hate every single second of this episode. It was like the writers had a checklist of fan demands and they tried to get through it in one episode.
1) Hook apologizes to Belle–not really. Go rewatch the scene. It was forced and contrived. He did it because Emma was standing there giving him a look. “You really know how to charm a girl, don’t you?” And his whole “there were extenuating circumstances” about trying to KILL HER. Apparently it’s okay to beat a woman and shoot them in the back so long as you had a good reason. That was NOT an apology. He smirked through the whole thing. It was not sincere and heartfelt.
2) CaptainFire–would have been better if the two had had any meaningful interaction before this but nope, Triangle of Doom took over. It was forced and fast and awkward.
Other things
–Rumple’s sacrifice meant nothing. He died a hero and it meant nothing
–Belle and Neal being totally OOC for the sake of plot. Right. Plot. *rolls eyes*
–Magical handwaving and convenient heretofore undisclosed secret things. Belle has read every book in that library; you really mean to tell me that she really never came across that “special” book at least once. And oh. BTW there is a vault of goo in the back yard. We’ll never hear about it ever again. It will go the way of the Black Fairy.
–There is no happy ending for Rumple. You don’t get over loosing a child. No amount of love or kindness is going to help. HIS CHILD DIED. His happy ending is over.
–Neal’s death, the more I think about it, was NOT beautiful or well written. It was acted wonderfully and that was it. Neal knew his entire life what it was to sacrifice. None of this, “thank you for finally showing me what true sacrifice is” to Rumple bull crap. He’s always known. Even if you disagree with Tallahasse incident, think about the Darling children. He’s done this his whole life. It’s all he’s ever done. This death was contrived and stupid and pointless and it makes Rumple’s sacrifice all for nothing.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 31, 2014 at 9:16 am #257258OnyxParticipant1) Hook apologizes to Belle–not really. Go rewatch the scene. It was forced and contrived. This I actually agree with. Which is why I was glad Belle didn’t really seem to buy into it any more than any of us did. He made “sorry” sound more like a question than anything else. I doubt that for Belle all’s forgiven and forgotten now.

And this is indeed something I didn’t understand as well. Neal has done many selfless things, he didn’t need anyone to show him what sacrifice means. Perhaps the writers wanted to “mend” Neal’s view of Rumple last minute, since he’s always been so disapproving of his father’s ways.

March 31, 2014 at 12:39 pm #257372GaultheriaParticipantThis episode fell flat for me. Whether or not the producers plan to bring Neal back, they’ve established that resurrection (albeit with contrived explanation) is within the rules. For me, that possibility severely reduces the dramatic impact of any character’s death.

March 31, 2014 at 12:56 pm #257384lunatigerParticipantI don’t think I need to explain to everyone just how much I hated this episode. Not because of Neal’s death but because of the way they assassinated his good character that he has had for 300 YEARS and made his death a plot contrivance!
March 31, 2014 at 2:22 pm #257450once_dudeParticipantassassination of Neal’s good character?:
1. The first time we see Baelfire after Neverland he is a thief. Did he not have at least literacy and common sense to work as a clerk in a store or something? Emma I can understand thieving she had no one to raise her, but Baelfire had Rumple, and had the opposite example in lost boys of how not to behave.
2. He left Emma just because some random guy reminded him of the curse, and Emma’s supposed destiny. Couldn’t they have raised Henry together and ended up in storybrooke?
3. He was with Tamara who is the most obvious liar I know.
4. He did not try to connect with rumple in Storybrooke, granted Rumple was busy with Lacey.
5. in Neverland he did well.
6. So therefore his mistake at the vault was in character a mostly noble guy who can be selfish and make terrible mistakes.
Magic always comes with a price, so I pay with visa.
March 31, 2014 at 2:27 pm #257454PriceofMagicParticipant@once_dude, the not trying to connect with Rumple can go both ways, Rumple didn’t try to connect with Bae in Storybrooke because he was busy with Lacey. It’s highly likely both were waiting for the other to make the first move in order to see how the land lay.
All magic comes with a price!
