Is kidnapping a child evil? Even if it’s being done for the greater good? Or, is it a selfish act for Regina, being done in part for Her own greater good and happy ending. Why is it ok for Regina to take Gepetto’s happiness (Pinocchio)? I get it that the Charmings asked her to infiltrate the villains. But how much is too much? Where’s the line between a noble act of infiltrating the villains and actually becoming one again?
Well, Emma, the town sheriff, didn’t do much to stop Regina, a former child abductor (e.g. Owen, Hansel, and Gretel), from taking Pinocchio. I guess that is meant to show Emma’s “greatest potential for darkness.” The writers want us to call into question what makes a hero and what makes a villain. So, I guess it’s about degrees of separation rather than a clear cut dividing line. Still, I find it hard to believe that Snow and Charming’s secret is as bad as Rumple and Regina killing mass amounts of people in the past.

March 16, 2015 at 3:12 am #298715WickedRegalParticipantThis episode was all over the place…seriously.
Good:
The Queens of Darkness interaction…I loved it.
Mal & Regina reunion and talk in the vault.
Emma showing more concern for her (Step)Grandma Regina more so than her now manipulating parents.
Mal & Regina First Meeting…
No Mixed
Disliked:
What the heck was that test supposed to prove…like seriously? If that’s Mal, Regina, Ursula, & Cruella’s idea of a fun game then heck no, “First one to save us loses”…so they’ll all just die together instead????? Seriously!
Timeline…I’m calling MAJOR BS on this timeline! Regina was married to King Leopold for about thirteen years….Snow White was at least 18-20 riding that horse! I refuse to believe Regina was struggling that badly with magic, I get Light Magic was more than likely what she was originally supposed to learn, but c’mon…dark magic was Cora’s ultimate weapon…it should have been a little more easy to learn it.
And Mal and Regina…in 1×02 they acted like they were best friends from WAY back in the day…I expected them to have met when Regina was in at least her early twenties, like right after Quite A Common Fairy!
“Weren’t you about the same age when you were to be wed?” – Mal
“Yes, it was about the same age you were when that sleeping beauty got the best of you.” – Regina
C’mon! I expected them to have known each other during Mal’s first war with King Stefan, which we STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!!! Are we just left to assume the obvious that he broke her heart????
And also…Regina had at least two or three years before becoming the Evil Queen which was her position for at least seven or so years…Do they really expect us to believe that Prince Phillip was a dog and Princess Aurora was under a sleeping curse for over TEN YEARS!!!
Snowing are risking not only Regina’s clean slate reputation, but also her life by manipulating her with this crap! Like seriously!!! And Henry doesn’t even know…I don’t want him to think his mother’s a villain again.
And the first test…drinking shots and getting drunk with a little public destruction….if that’s what makes you a villain, then heck weren’t we all villains at our High School Senior Prom?!!!
This episode had more cons than it did pros….and I just can’t right now with it…I just can’t.

For @WickedRegal not to love a Regina/Mal episode, I know something must be off with the writing.
Things I liked:
– Regina’s snark: “The Charming softball team and their pirate mascot’
– Seeing August again (even if only briefly)
-FINALLY getting more of Mal’s story. I’d been waiting for that ever since S1 E2. (Too bad it was so inconsistent with what Aurora said in 2×1).
– The devious grin on Colin’s face when “Hook” had gotten the dagger. He’s good at looking sly.Things I could’ve done without:
– Inconsistencies left, right and center! Timeline wobbliness.
– Weird character motivation. Just why would Mal not want revenge on Regina for locking her up as a dragon for 28 years? Why would Emma just go along with Regina kidnapping Pinocchio? Why would Rumple not suspect Regina is spying? Why would Belle trust “Hook” with the dagger? Has Belle learned nothing? Remember the last time anyone ever got hold of Rumple’s dagger? It ended in near disaster.
– Clunky writing. ‘Because we’re villains and that’s what villains do!’ (paraphrase) Breaks shot glass! “Am I bad enough now?”
– Rumple impersonating Hook to dupe Belle. That is just all sorts of wrong.
– Belle falling for Rumple’s ploy, and for her blindly trusting “Hook.”"That’s how you know you’ve really got a home. When you leave it, there’s this feeling that you can’t shake. You just miss it." Neal Cassidy
March 16, 2015 at 4:54 am #298725onceaholicParticipantJust read everyone else’s responses.
I forgot to add the train in my original response. Just like @RumplesGirl, I am completely confuddled by this train.
Where does it do? Where does it go?
Is it just a freight train, and no passengers are allowed? (=food and other supplies while under various curses and spells).
Is it a way out of dodge? I assume not, but still, gotta ask.
What the heck was that test supposed to prove…like seriously? If that’s Mal, Regina, Ursula, & Cruella’s idea of a fun game then heck no, “First one to save us loses”…so they’ll all just die together instead????? Seriously!
And then there was this. I am glad I am not the only one who thought the whole evilness test was silly.
I think I will dock a full point for the test, and half a point for the train (because it was not made clear what kind of train it was and where it went, but we can make certain assumptions).
Final grade 6 1/2 out of 10….again.
P.S
Does anyone else feel like there needs to be more Mal backstory? I would like to know why she had a vendetta against Briar Rose…why she cursed her with the sleeping curse. Are we meant to assume that it is because she was not invited to Briar Rose’s birthday party? Basically, I would like to know what turned Mal evil in the first place.

March 16, 2015 at 7:32 am #298731RumplesGirlKeymasterSeriously, am I missing something or does this make no sense
No it just makes no sense
Nitpick – Has no one thought to just flip the freaking page over and see what’s on the back of the pic of the door? Even if it’s another illustration instead of text, surely it could still offer some clue, instead of going over the same door pic time and time again? The pages are double sided. That door pic was used to illustrate a story. There should be more of the story on the other side of the page. Or even flip through the book to figure out where the page is missing from and look for clues in the surrounding pages? GAH!
You mean you wouldn’t stare at the same page over and over with a magnifying glass?
Belle wilfully giving Rumple’s Dagger to someone she believes is his mortal enemy is…something I can’t accurately convey my thoughts on without using multiple expletives.
Right??! Hiding the dagger…not necessarily a bad idea. Giving it to the guy you know wnated to kill your husband for over 300 years and just 7 weeks ago (or so) stabbed your husband with his hook while in a car? Not so much. Call Snowing! Call Emma!

YES because this wasn’t a Mal backstory at all!! There was no “story” just random moving through scene with hammy overtones. Like maybe two mins between Mal and Aurora that was TOTALLY inconsistent with what we’ve seen and heard before.

What bothers me is that Regina kidnapped and then didn’t protect the child she apologized to (well, his father) literally last week! Last week she was a monster to Pinocchio but then felt really bad and owned up to her mistakes (and that was great!) but then less than 48 hours, she’s kidnapping hm and then not stopping Mal, Rumple, et al from turning the boy back into a man so that they can torture the answers out of him.
Wildly inconsistent character growth is wildly inconsistent

“I am the one with undercover experience, so if you’re going to succeed, I insist on helping you…
…by tagging along with my parents and dragging my boyfriend along for good measure, because it’s so much easier to have covert meetings when there’s a large group of people involved…
…and by following you in a clunky old truck when we’re the only two cars on the road in the middle of the night, because no one’s gonna notice that I’m following you…
…and by storming right into the middle of your undercover operation to have a chit chat because if any of your associates are watching to make sure you do the thing, it totally won’t mess it up and get you in trouble if they see me wander in…
…and then I’ll just chill at the scene of the crime afterwards with my GPS tracker with your name on it out in the open.”
Way to be an experienced undercover operative, Emma. NOT.

Mal’s drunk outfit I guess.
The fact that Cruella can do more than control animals and can do some basic spell casting. I was surprised when Mal said Cruella enchanted the car to drive itself.
Disliked:
I know I say this a lot, but poor Ursula being a glorified henchman. I was so hoping it was her posing as Hook, so that the writers could redeem themselves and acknowledge her penchant for shape shifting which was established in Little Mermaid.
The writers trying to weaken Malifcient’s powers by basically implying her only power was to turn into a dragon. Malificient has Cora level powers at least, and even if she couldn’t turn to a dragon she still would still be formidable. She just stood there why Stefan arrested them and Regina had to save the day. Made no sense at all. I mean Cora had her spell book for goodness sake. She obviously one of the most powerful beings in the Once and Disney Cannon.

Flashback Rumple- Especially liked the part where he is stood on the gate and Regina opens it so he just swings back with the gate.
Cruella- She’s definitely my favourite of the QoD. Loved the part where she makes Mal pay up on a bet they had.
No Robin- It’s been nice to have a break from the OQ angst, I’ve certainly not missed it. It makes me wonder if the writers realised they misfired OQ in 4A so they’ve given it a break and then are going to reset it and give it a more positive spin.
Mixed:
The QoD raising hell in Storybrooke- I like the idea of the QoD having a wild night out, I just wish we had chance to see it on screen.
Down and Out Mal- I liked seeing Mal in the “don’t give a crap anymore” phase, but wish she’d found her own reason to fight back rather than Regina doing all the leg work.
RumBelle’s scenes- I can see why Rumple did what he did, especially as Belle so easily gave his dagger to “Hook” his arch enemy, but it does raise a bit of a moral issue in regards to them being together. Does Belle forgive Rumple or does she never find out what he did because of the oath with “Hook”? (Also, unlike Snow, Belle can actually keep a secret). What Rumple is doing in 4B does seem a bit worse than in 4A since here he is actively setting out to deceive Belle whereas in 4A, he was just trying to avoid her finding out what he was up to. It does seem like Rumple’s made things really difficult for himself by giving Belle the dagger only to fake it and then steal it back etc when several times Belle had offered to give him the dagger and he turned it down. It defies logic.
Disliked:
Mal’s castle- In season 1, it was by a lake, now it’s halfway up a mountain surrounded by wasteland. It joins the curtains in the minor but major continuity errors.
Stefan- Mal was minding her own business and Stefan just came up and harassed her for no reason. She’d given up, she wasn’t causing any issue so why did he decide to provoke her? He made the situation worse.
Snowing- How thick can they get? How did Snow ever survive as a bandit if her version of covert meeting is out in the open or as a large group in the library?
Flashback Regina-Timeline wise I’ve worked out that the episode takes place before Fruit of the Poisonous tree before Regina has Leopold killed. What throws it out though is how Regina is still in “Young Regina” mode. At least nearly a decade has passed since she was struggling with magic, she should really be more proficient in magic and more devious at this stage of the game than she was presented in this episode. Hated how Regina harmed the horse.
Pinocchio being turned back into August so easily- If all it took was Rumple waving his dagger, why didn’t they ask him to do this back in season 2?
Modern day Regina- She was so being played by the QoD and Rumple.
All magic comes with a price!
