Am I the only one who isn’t thrilled by the appearance of a demon? I feel like whenever a fantasy show goes that route, it means the writers have officially run out of good ideas.

Depends on the fantasy show. Demons are totally within the wheelhouse of, say, Supernatural and Buffy and Angel. But they were set up from the get go to be included. ONCE operated under a fairy tale paradigm that stuck really close to its Disney roots but has never dipped its toe into the more metaphysical realm outside of the super broad “good vs evil” theme. The problem with demons is that eventually the audience asks, “okay, but what about the other side?” Supernatural, for example, didn’t hesitate to reply, “yup. Angels. Meet Castiel.” Buffy teased heaven which would go hand in hand with the other side of demons. Angel…less so.

I am wondering if ONCE won’t remove the “demonic” name from this creature–if indeed they even call it Chernabog on screen–and just call it some sort of monster (like the Wraith) that just so happens to look a lot like Chernabog, at least enough that the audience makes the connection without having to label him as Chernabog/demon

I don’t think it’s particularly surprising that he’s showing up now, because he’s another character from Fantasia, the same movie that gave us the Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the Hat.

Yeah, I gathered that much, but I think the addition of a flying demon falls into the same “don’t-attempt” category as Cora’s ghost and seance, and that episode wasn’t particularly well-received.

Demons have been in plenty of fantasy and fairy tale stories, so I actually don’t think it’s unfitting.

I just remembered, this was mentioned in that TV Guide article, in relation to Chernabog:

Regina, who has reclaimed her job as mayor, and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) will inadvertently release a prominent creature from Disney lore. But, unlike the snow beast from Frozen that terrorized Storybrooke last fall, executive producer Adam Horowitz says, “this monster is not just about wanton destruction. It will lead to a startling revelation about Emma — something that’ll be huge news to the audience.”

Chernabog is a servant of Lily who is the anti-savior, and somehow “linked” to Emma either by virtue of twinage or is actually Emma’s “dark side” that cannot coexist within Emma Swan herself since she is TL Incarnate

“Neither can live while the other survives.” Fitting reference for me to make, considering the Harry Potter references in their initial flashback back in 405.

I can dig this Lily being Emma’s “dark side”!!!

So, we should start to hear spoilers about the episode fairly soon.

I don’t think demons are an odd thing for this show. I mean, we have Ursula and Poseidon who are gods. If there are gods of all kinds, there has to be the opposing sides to them. So i can imagine demons exist here as well. If Narnia is a place, that that should mean Christianity is a thing (right? I mean Aslan in our land is Jesus…) so that would complicate things more for me than just having demons.
