Also, does anyone else think that Rumple was a bit…off? I mean, it seemed more like there wasn’t enough effort put by Bobby into the character – and don’t take that as a hate on Bobby. He’s a fantastic actor, but it doesn’t seem like he’s interested in the role.

Bobby has seemed “off” to me since the second half of season three. He is phoning it in as much as Bobby Carlyle can. You’re not the only one who has noticed—Jeremy has said something similar in podcast

That’s not to say there haven’t still been moments where he’s given it his all. That confrontation between Rumple and Belle at the town line in 411 is a fine example.

I feel like Rumple without Bae as his bedrock & goal has lost an important component of his character, and they haven’t successfully made either Belle or Henry a replacement. For the actor, losing a key component of the character’s structure can’t be easy.

Of course not. Hence my “he’s phoning it in as much as Bobby Carlyle can” which is that even when he phones it in he is miles above most actors in the world. But there have been indications, many at that, that Bobby isn’t as thrilled or engaged with this show he was once was.

THIS. Bobby expressed at CC that he thought it was a real shame when Neal got killed off, and that MRJ is a fine actor. I think Bobby and MRJ had some of my all-time favorite interactions on the show, and they played off of each other so well. The father-son dynamic was absolutely central to Bobby’s characterization of Rumple. Bae was the heart of Rumple, and without his boy, Rumple falls flat (or rather, Bobby’s motivation to play Rumple suffers). Though, I agree with @MatthewPaul, that Bobby and Emilie nailed the banishment scene in 4×11.

True, but as I’ve said elsewhere, Bobby & Emilie work so well together that they shine in almost every scene they have together. He tends to bring out the best in his coworkers, and it shows–Lana’s amazing, but her scenes with Bobby have an extra tingle somehow. (It was really missing in 4A, when they were in the same scene all of once for a whole arc.)

But he built the character of Rumplestiltskin around this centuries-long fight to get back to his son…and then took that core drive away, with only the hat to replace it. Unless they manage to make Belle the new Bae without destroying both characters in the process, they will never recapture even a shadow of that dynamic. Rumple NEEDS a goal to function at all in this series. If the goal doesn’t have a shred of humanity in it (like the hat goal–which might have if they’d just dwelled on it for more than one conversation at the last minute), he just becomes a farcically evil, sadistic misanthropist. He loses the loveableness that makes him fascinating and tolerable, even when he’s being horribly cruel.

And then what’s left is just the beast.

What the heck is green breath magic?

It is odd. Maybe she poofs dogs into existence and controls their actions with her breath?

    Yep.

Several months ago I theorised on this board that one of Cruella’s powers would be controlling animals, not just turning into one. Turns out I was right 😉

Okay…the sneak peek was good. But I have to agree…Bobby hasn’t been giving Once his complete 100% unless it’s a very emotional or table flipping scene. I believe he’s sooo over OUAT….
