I’m just going to say it. If Agnes is indeed Adult! Lily then she has been woefully miscast. To take an original character who was conceived as being Latina (for whatever reason, in this case to make the Emma/Lily Emma/Regina parallel) and turn her into a white woman is pretty horrible.
I agree. I mean, I think the whole point of the character of Lily and making her Latina was so we could connect with her Regina. Suddenly re-conning that whole thing and making not Latina is really…very bad. Granted, the actress who played Lily only appeared in one episode earlier this season but I think we have eyeballs and remember that she was indeed Latina and Agnes clearly is not.
I would not be surprised if some Latina Once fans would be in an uproar over this.

The casting call for young Lily described her as “”a bright, self-reliant teen who boasts a charming, take-no-prisoners punk exterior and the heart of a secretive, insecure opportunist”. No where did it specify for a Latina actress. Perhaps they chose a dark haired and eyed actress who maybe could be paralleled to Regina, but did not necessarily need to be. Lana is only half Latina, her mother being Italian. They could just as easily have chosen anyone of southern European heritage to play the part if they wanted the actress to look like Lana. Why pigeonhole an actress as “Latina” when the part was given on merit and not ethnicity? The actress who played young Lily did a great job and I personally didn’t look at her onscreen and think of her as being cast because she was any particular ethnicity.

Nicole Munoz is Latina. Same as Lana Parilla. They chose an actress with a similar look and the Latina heritage to draw the Regina/Lily parallel. It’s the same reason they chose a Latino actor for both Young Henry and Old Henry

The girl who played young Lily was latina and she got that role on talent not because of her ethnicity. That’s great. However, continuity wise, Lily is now Latina. Therefore adult Lily should be Latina. People don’t just change ethnicity as they grow up.
Considering Once has an unintentional habit of discarding any characters that are POC, you think they’d not whiten up a character that is already established as a POC.

Keeper of FelixFebruary 18, 2015 at 5:33 pm #296260RumplesGirlKeymasterI have no doubt that Agnes got the role because she is talented. I also have no doubt that she will do a good job with the role she has been given. I bear her no ill will. But it doesn’t change the fact that ONCE’s already *super* problematic treatment of POC in their TV show (all white cast, POC who either die instantly, die before episode end, or turn out to be evil or filler) just got a lot more problematic.
The casual audience will not care. But, as someone who is not, I care.

Similarly, if they found a Persian actress who looked Latina and had a likeness to Nicole, would that have been an issue? We’re all just assuming that a Latina actress was cast because of Lana which I don’t particularly buy, mainly due to the casting call. Who knows, maybe Agnes will be transformed into a convincing doppelganger for an adult Nicole. But, whatever.
For the record, I agree that Once has a woeful track record with regards to POC. I just don’t think its necessary to make an issue out of this particular casting because Agnes isn’t Latina.

I think one of our favs had an out of wedlock baby, and fairies (or Rumple) hid the baby and stole some memories.

But yeah, no, all joking aside, I just don’t think Agnes looks anything like Lily so she is far from perfect casting. I will deal with it because I have to, and I am sure she is a great FANTASTIC actress but ya know…….yep……
