I feel like the explanation we’re going to get, if we ever get it at all, is that Merlin was never really there, and Emma was imagining him in her head. We do already know that Merlin had ways of communicating even when he was trapped in a tree, so he somehow could have implanted that vision. We do know that, according to Elliot Knight, that the scene was a late addition to the premiere. They probably just did the scene as a fun way to set up the Camelot storyline.

I am thinking that MERLIN told Emma about a prediction of what is going to happen in SB …. that is why some of Emma’s DO action in SB when she is isolating herself from those she loves…. it is her way of protecting them…. I am thinking this more and more.

No she’s the 1980s cliche sexy librarian that the nerds all want because she’s smart and sexy but with little development outside of being the brains and beautiful and in a relationship. At some point she’s going to be chewing on the end of a pencil with her shirt buttons open.
She’s also teetering (maybe in) MPDG territory.
