So Vortigan really was the Dark One we saw in Dreamcatcher. How does Nimue play into this, then?

In legend, I don’t think there is a link between Nimue and Vortigan (other than both knowing Merlin). Vortigan was a glorified warlord who knew Merlin as the boy who predicted why Vortigan was unable to construct a castle. Nimue was the woman Merlin loved, but I think that is an entirely different legend.

In OUAT,  I’m not exactly sure how these three tie together. Possibly Vortigan is Merlin’s rival. Merlin accused the dark one (probably Vortigan) of destroying the only woman he’d ever loved (i.e. Nimue). At the time, some people thought Nimue must the dark one behind the mask. However, in 5×6, Merlin’s voicemail says that Nimue is now the only one who can destroy the darkness. So that calls into question Nimue being the dark one if she can still help.

Lancelot may know where to find Nimue, since she is often called the Lady of the Lake. In 2×3, Lancelot said his mother had raised him by the lake. Might Nimue be Lancelot’s mother?

Is Vortigan the second Dark One after killing Nimue like I theorized earlier?

    Could be.

Or does Nimue really have nothing to do with the darkness, against all expectations…?

Doubtful. I think Nimue is Merlin’s downfall. In one legend, Merlin becomes infatuated with her, but she refuses to return his love until he shares all of his magical secrets with her. Having the gift of foresight, Merlin foresees she is trouble, but he is powerless to stop it. He simply continues to teach her his magic, until one day, she lures him to a cave and/or traps him in a tree (according to different versions). I guess the writers of OUAT have made Vortigan a stand-in for Nimue entrapping Merlin, so maybe, but there is probably some twist.

I am starting to believe Nimue is the second dark one. I still think it was her in the mask that turned Merlin into a tree as this would go along with Arthurian Legend. Perhaps Vortigan was the first dark one and in order to save Merlin Nimue killed Vortigan with the dagger, thus taking on the darkness to save the one she loved (similar to how Emma took on the darkness to save the town.) I think when Merlin says you destroyed her he is speaking to the darkness, hence why he uses the would destroy and not kill. Merlin can’t bring himself to kill the dark one because he still loves Nimue deeply and is also guilt-ridden as he may blame himself for why Nimue became the dark one. This would also help explain why Nimue can’t kill Merlin and instead turns him into a tree. I know this doesn’t make perfect sense with the whole voicemail thing, but I think that may have just been a red herring.

Actually, that makes a lot of sense to me. If they keep with Arthurian legend at all (which we really have no reason to believe they will, but whatever), Vortigan and Merlin go way back, to when Merlin was a boy. Vortigan was originally told to sacrifice Merlin (well, not Merlin as such, but a boy with Merlin’s particular parentage) in order to keep the castle he was trying to build from collapsing. Since they like to merge different legends together, maybe castle = Camelot, and V was the claimant to the throne to Camelot before Arthur. Or something.

Jackie Minns as Woman, Max Haynes as Young Man

Innocent peasant victims? Or could the man be Prometheus?

Adam and Eve type figures? First man and first woman? (If this episode involves the first spark/fire for forging exacilbur and the dark one back together). Or maybe that is too biblical.

If Merlin the man died (as it seems that his apprentice has as well) and his essence remains who will be the next Merlin? Cured!Emma? Henry? Rumple? Zelena’s unborn baby? lol.
