This title brings to mind bodies decaying. The other meaning it brings to mind is the show itself is decaying (though I doubt that is what the writers had in mind when they named it).

When childhood dies, its corpses are called adults and they enter society, one of the politer names of Hell. That is why we dread children, even if we love them. They show us the state of our decay.”
I actually don’t know the original source, but have seen it quoted by others, and attributed to Aldiss. Anyway, seemed a propos.
January 17, 2016 at 5:23 pm #315146RumplesGirlKeymasterThe jokes write themselves, yes, and it’s a bit hilarious that there is such a thing as network decay. But in this case, I do seriously doubt that A and E (and the two writers of this script) were hinting at anything. It likely has something to do with or is a fragment of a line uttered in the episode itself.

That’s interesting. They often use lyrics or passages from books for titles (Quite a Common Fairy, New York City Serenade, ect) so maybe. The episode is Dorothy/Zelena centric so maybe it has something to do with that dynamic, what with Dorothy re-entering the picture, all grown up and a witch hunter.

I think it makes sense logically.
Hades, being the land of the dead, not the land of the dead, but the living may come and go as they please, probably has a time limit clause, and any living soul not meant to be there probably has to join the dead by dying.
In the Disney film, when a living person goes into the river of souls, they began to die and wither.
And one of the things we learned in Screenwriting was that to add higher stakes, the writer can give the hero a time limit they need to complete their mission. If the heroes only have, lets say, three days to find Hook or else they die, it make for more drama.
That’s my guess.

That’s a good guess. That stuff happens *all* the time. I’d say it’s a bargain with Hades, though. Emma has X amount of time to find Hook and get him out of the Underworld or she has to remain in the Underworld as well. Hades gets two new souls (and the soul of the Savior at that) but if Emma succeeds, Hades releases Hook’s soul and doesn’t come for him until “the proper time” or something. The whole arc is a bit of a gendered swap Orpheus and Eurydice and that story has a deal as well: if Orpheus can get his beloved out of Hades by walking in front of her and never looking back, then Eurydice can go back to the land of the living. Spoiler Alert: it doesn’t work. It’s not a time limit like you suggest, but it does add higher stakes.

The writers always said they will address the repercussions of that at some point, and since that is exactly what Emma wants to do with Hook, perhaps this story line comes back full swing. Maybe Snow and Charming can only last so long with one heart. Although, I do like the idea of them needing to get out in a certain time frame otherwise they will decay, die, and be trapped in the UW.
January 19, 2016 at 11:52 am #315204SirMedrautParticipantGoing to propose an alternative meaning, seeing as I just finished rewatching season three and with this likely being Zelena-centric – the first thing the title made me think of was a Zelena quote from 3×14 when she’s shaving Rumple with the dagger and she’s talking about how the two of them never had the option to ‘put on a good face’ in the past because no matter what they did, their “outsides showed exactly what was rotting on the inside.”
While I think the past few guesses in this thread are probably more likely than a title being influenced by a passing line two seasons ago, I wouldn’t be surprised if we were to see Zelena going green (again) in Oz in 5×16. Also given her speculated connection with a certain Lord of the Dead, “Our Decay” feels to me like an extremely appropriate title for an episode revealing HellWitch backstory, though I can’t help but think that 16 is too early for those flashbacks and based on what little we know and what we can assume, too crowded storywise (not that it’s stopped them before, has it?)

Definitely a possibility.

Good point. Seeing the bts photo of Snow crying, it must be about a consequence. If they stay in the underworld with a shared heart something terrible will happen to them. This will complicate things for Emma, she would never want to lose them. She will have to get them safely out of the underworld fast before it is too late.
