Writing this without reading the other replies. If I end up repeating what others have said, my apologies. minus points for: -Merlin telling young Emma that bad things with good intentions leads to terrible things/darkness/whatever it was. If this is true, then perhaps Snow should have been able to walk through that door to get to Glinda, unless of course her heart was healed of all the bad things that she had done until that point? And what about self-protection and the protection of others? I really don’t like where they are going with this. -Emma starting off the pit of gloop. Rumple didn’t start off this way, so why should she? (Temporary theory: DO that start off redeemed (Mr Gold) or the love incarnate (Emma) end up back in the gloop as is the only thing that is strong enough to convert them?). -Why is the WW needed for the wand? Regina is not entirely ”white magic” so surely her inclusion would tip the balance towards evil? -WHY DID EMMA TURN EVIL AT ALL? She is supposed to be pure love/white magic incarnate right, and Snowing removed the darkness from her? Perhaps she cannot stay good, and be influenced by outside forces (dark magic) or life experiences???? Not happy with…. -Henry seeming to have more respect for Emma, who was the DO and in a different realm (because he didn’t want to change the story), than Regina and went off with Hook to break out the WW. Maybe I misunderstood? What I liked…. JM’s performance as the trainee dark one. (Not sure about her as the actual dark one, though). Interesting that the dagger was part of Excalibar. Liked Merida’s performance (but not her inclusion). Question 1 Last time the crew ended up back in EF, they landed in their full costume, long hair and all. It didn’t happen this time, nor did it happen to Emma and Hook when they fell through the portal. Is the something about the curse that does that to them, returning to their original state? Part of the ”undoing?” Question 2 I don’t understand why Emma couldn’t have asked for help catching another wisp. Was there a reason I didn’t catch?
I’ll address a few of your questions since I’m pressed for time right now:
About Emma turning dark: Yes, Snowing did remove the darkness within her, but remember in the season 4 finale she was consumed by the darkness that was in Rumple’s heart from being the dark one. So she has light in her heart but she once again has darkness, giving her the capacity to be evil.
Question 1
My take on this is that the last time they went back to the EF it was through another curse that had the capacity to recreate their wardrobe, perhaps. This time around it was just a portal so I don’t think it had the power to change their wardrobe.
Question 2
I’m not sure why they didn’t address just getting another whisp for Emma. My guess is that whisps aren’t exactly very common considering their power, so more than likely they’re just isn’t another one available.
Just my two cents.

No other solution can exist–we have to kill, we have to do the horrible things. It’ll jump to another solution later, but it blinds its host to other possibilities, to hope.

Disliked:
Snow being so ready to use the dagger on Emma. Ughhhhhhh
Henry being so calm about his mother becoming the DO…reading a book.

While I found that uncomfortable and sad to watch, it was the only reliable way to stop Emma from murdering Merida. Then they chose to gamble with Merida’s life. I imagine Merida developing into a tyrant because of unresolvable trust issues stemming from this.

September 28, 2015 at 3:23 pm #308643OnyxParticipantThis was a very good episode in my opinion. Jen and Bobby, they’re back! Thank God. Their performances have been ‘going through the motions’, but in this ep, they found their edge again.
Liked the rose in jar, but Belle was all like ‘I’m not leaving him and that’s final’, and Blue was all ‘don’t worry, here’s a rose, now go’ and then Belle just went. I get that they wanted to squeeze in that nice little reference while they didn’t have much time for it, but it was WAY too rushed.
I kinda liked Zelena’s plan. Go away where no one will be bothered by you, but unfortunately that was a bust.
I like the inclusion of the dwarves and Granny. The meta was funny, but at the same time, if you know this, why not fix it sooner?! Oh well, better late than never… I think.
The dagger thing. Brilliant.
And then there was…… the amnesia…. *sigh*

Heroes Reborn had something similar in Noah’s monologue in episode 1. Maybe it’s Hollywood’s latest thing.

September 28, 2015 at 5:01 pm #308657PriceofMagicParticipantI’ve reached the point with Once where I don’t care any more, I no longer have that excitement and anticipation for the next episode. This feels like a final season kind of thing, and if it is to be I feel kind of glad. They’ve done the author, now they’re exploring the dark one history, that’s the two big things covered so I don’t know where else they could go so whether they’ll advertise the second half as the “final season” or drag it out for another season is anyone’s guess.
This episode was okay. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it.
The Emma as the dark one storyline is interesting and it’s good to see dark one Rumple again even if it’s just in Emma’s head.
I have no problems with Merida at this stage, at least she didn’t take over the show like Elsa and Anna did.
RumBelle continue to be the main reason why I watch this show, so whilst the brief scene they had was nice, it was way too brief but also had some things that bugged me, mainly why is Rumple being referred to as Belle’s “beast”? I get that we were being clobbered over the head with the beauty and the beast reference but unless Blue Fairy is being very meta and self-aware, it a very odd and derogatory turn of phrase. Also, whilst it’s nice that Belle’s being included on the adventure this time, why is when she wants to go she’s not allowed yet when she wants to stay behind she’s forced to go?
Zelena- Zelena is just the token evil team mate. Although she’s done bad things that she should be ashamed of, at the same time, it’s kind of refreshing not to have her following the reformed villain line like Hook and Regina. Zelena’s not dong anything particularly bad at the moment, she’s just needling Regina so she’s tolerable at the moment.I want Zelena to be able to keep her baby, I don’t think Regina has any right to just take it from her. Zelena wanted to go back to Oz, they should’ve let and spared us all the drama that’s bound to follow.
Henry- I don’t give a crap about Henry, he’s just a plot device at this point. He couldn’t even show emotion or reluctance about releasing the woman that was responsible for his father’s death. Although the writers seem to write Hook as if the sun shines out of his backside so it’s inevitable that Henry would fall victim to this.
Regina- I liked Regina’s snark but the OQ dynamic is dragging her down as a character. It’s okay on the surface but I’m not feeling like there’s a deep connection between her and Robin which is what the writers want us to think. As to Robin, if he’s still smelling of forest at this stage of the game, perhaps he’d be wise to invest in some deodorant and perhaps shower more often?
Hook- Dear god. When you’re rooting for Zelena to kill him, you know there’s a problem. I feel bad for Colin because he can only act what he’s given because Hook is getting near unbearable. As I said above, the writers are writing him as if the sun shines out of his backside and it doesn’t. As the seasons go on, Hook becomes a more badly written character. In season 2, you had his somewhat sympathetic backstory, coupled with his self-serving nature and there was chemistry with Emma even if it was along the frenemy lines. Now he’s being placed in a badly fitting role of “hero”. Hook is no hero, at best he’s an anti-hero, yes he’ll help out the good guys but only if there’s something in it for him. What the writers are telling us to think and what we are actually seeing on screen are two totally different things compounded by the fact that none of the other characters call Hook out. He’s a selfish prat who’s only interested in himself and Emma. The rest of the town can be damned so long as he gets what he wants which is Emma. If Hook was being treated as an anti-hero then such an attitude would be in character, yet Hook is being presented as this redeemed hero and it just doesn’t gel with what we’re seeing on screen.
Sneezy as sheriff- 3 things here. 1) Doesn’t Sneezy have the pharmacy to run? Where is he finding time to be sherriff on top of that? 2)Why is Sneezy wearing Emma’s jacket or at least a mansized version of it? Is it the new sheriff uniform? It was kind of dumb. 3) This is the second time that Storybrooke is free of issues with the main group being out of town (first time being Neverland). Logically, it’d make more sense for the rest of the town to gang up and kick the main group out of town then they wouldn’t have to worry about anymore crisis’s (can’t spell that word but it’s the plural of crisis) which seem to just centre around the main group.
My two main issues with the episode and the show in general are these:
1. We were told that the only way to get to our land was via the dark curse yet over the course of the seasons, we’ve been shown numerous ways to travel between worlds. It kind of undermines the whole premise of the show.
2. Everyone except Belle gave Rumple the stink-eye for being the dark one, yet you can bet your bottom dollar Emma will be easily forgiven. The hypocrisy of the characters is really irritating. They show contempt for Rumple yet Hook gets a free pass without earning it, it is very frustrating. I will seriously be beyond annoyed if Rumple still gets treated like he’s something they’ve just trod in by the other characters.
Whilst it pays to listen to fans in order to keep your show going, at the same time it needs to be worked into the story organically. Sometimes what the fans want just doesn’t fit and it’s no good forcing it in. CS is such a thing, SQ is such a thing. SQ would actually make more sense at this stage, even though you’ve got the Snow factor, at least Emma and Regina have the history to back it up. Emma just did a 180 on Hook.
I just hope they don’t make Hook front and centre of every episode. I’ll stick with once until the end only because I’ve come this far, so there’s no point quitting now but I’ve reached the point now where I don’t enjoy the show like I used to. I watch out of habit, not because I’m anxious to see what happens next.

I agree with you on this point. I’ve found it very frustrating how the show constantly contradicts the rules it sets up for itself. Oh no this can never be done unless (you know) the plot calls for it. I also have trouble seeing where the show is going to go from here. The history of the DO is something that needed to be explored and it certainly allows for us to see different facets of the characters personalities. But once the darkness is defeated, what then?
At the show’s inception the goal was to break the curse and go back home. Now there is no such goal. Since S3 it’s been all about fighting off the evil that just happens to cross the path of the heroes. I’m not sure what else there is left to explore, unless (of course) yet another villain from the Disney catalog or otherwise decides to make an appearance.
September 28, 2015 at 6:50 pm #308672RumplesGirlKeymasterAdding a dislike that more’s a quibble than anything but…Merida’s hair in the promo photos was a very natural and good red. The wig she’s sporting though is like someone dumped a vat of neon paint on her head. She looks like a cartoon instead of ONCE’s human version.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"September 28, 2015 at 7:17 pm #308674RumplesGirlKeymasterRandom complaint: Why were Robin and Roland at the loft? Do they live there too?! Why aren’t they crashing at Regina’s much larger house? Did I miss something from Season 4 about this?
ZERO idea about this, except it probably has to do with money and that since the loft is a smaller set, it might be cheaper?
