Emma starting off the pit of gloop. Rumple didn’t start off this way, so why should she?
(Temporary theory: DO that start off redeemed (Mr Gold) or the love incarnate (Emma) end up back in the gloop as is the only thing that is strong enough to convert them?).
My theory is RUMPLE got the dagger … killed ZOZO then murdered the DUKE and his henchmen. Then took on the ogres … I think his actions pretty much sent him to the dark side with very little training from the previous DARK ONES … later going on to terrorize others in the village.EMMA is actively resisting becoming the DARK ONE that might be why she had to be trained by the psuedo DARK RUMPLE. …
[adrotate group="5"]September 28, 2015 at 10:19 pm #308693TheWatcherParticipant-Emma starting off the pit of gloop. Rumple didn’t start off this way, so why should she?
Rump and Emma got turned into the DO in different ways. Rump got the darkness directly injected into him via killing the previous dark one. Emma was consumed and carried off by it to the vault. I presume this is how the first dark one was also made, by merlin attaching it to someone and that person being carried off and released through the vault.
WHY DID EMMA TURN EVIL AT ALL?
I think Evil is a choice. And I think Emma herself made that choice. I could be wrong, but we will have to wait and see.
I don’t understand why Emma couldn’t have asked for help catching another wisp. Was there a reason I didn’t catch?
The wisps may not be very common and probably extremely hard to find. I asked myself the same question and just came to that conclusion. If they were easy then a lot of the shows problems could have been fixed seasons ago. But I assume when Emma let Merida go, she was going to just try and find another one.
Last time the crew ended up back in EF, they landed in their full costume, long hair and all. It didn’t happen this time, nor did it happen to Emma and Hook when they fell through the portal. Is the something about the curse that does that to them, returning to their original state? Part of the ”undoing?”
The last time it was because of the curse. It’s like when regina casted the first dark curse, everyone didn’t appear in this world wearing FTL clothing. They wore what was normal. When regina casted it the second time to get them back to the EF, they appeared in FTL clothing, what was normal for the FTL. When Emma and Hook went to the EF, they didn’t go via curse. They time traveled. When the crew took the tornado, it was not a curse, it was just transportation from one place to another again, so they stayed the same. When Emma brought them back, it wasn’t a curse, just transportation so they wore what they were wearing when she did whatever she did. I think the only curse part of it was the memeory thing.

“Your turn.” – Lancelot
The dagger is the missing half (well, more like a third) of Excalibur?! AWESOME!
RumpleDO – Seriously, can I just have Robert follow me around and my narrate my life? Name your price DO.
RumpleDO ‘living’ inside Emma’s head / Emma sounding like a crazy person to everyone else when she talks to RumpleDO.
The rose. THE ROSE!
ZELENA CUTTING OFF HER HAND. Witch be crazy.
Bex’s acting. She does such a good job.
“What’s she saying? Accent’s a bit much, no?” – RumpleDO. I thought this was hilarious. I would love to know if Robert came up with this himself, or if the writers surprised him with it (and of course, what his reaction was lol).
Regina and Snow’s moment regarding Emma’s baby blanket. I enjoy seeing their relationship improve.
Liked:
“You’re ruining my chi.” – Zelena
Explanation of how the DO teleports. I already imagined it being this way, but it was nice to have the confirmation.
The wand’s design, especially the faces on the handle.
Merida willing to fight Emma even after knowing she can use magic.
Belle rolling her eyes at Hook and Regina’s argument in the mayor’s office.
Disliked:
So the Apprentice is dead this time right? Like, dead dead. Yes? Can we get an EKG hooked up to him just to be certain?
The rose being far too impractical for Belle to carry around. You know what would’ve made sense? The Beauty and the Beast enchanted hand mirror to keep an eye on Rumple and the rose. Belle can look in on her sleeping beauty, can check her hair mid-adventure, and to explain its usage Mother Superior Blue Fairy gets two extra lines of dialogue for the whole season. Everyone wins.
Hook, settle down. You’ll get to make eyes at Emma again in about 35 to 40 minutes.
So… no explanation on how Regina knew opening the portal would weaken Zelena? I was enjoying seeing Regina come through for both Robin and Snowing, but then was let down by convenience of plot.
“How do you think it feels when everyone asks you how the adventure was, and you’ve gotta say that no one asked you to go along, that you weren’t needed? We’re not turning our backs on you again, not even in the face of certain death.” – Grumpy. Poor writing (just my opinion). Maybe I’m missing something here, but the two lines are contradictory. First Grumpy sounds like he’s telling Snow off for no longer including him in her adventures. Then Grumpy implies that the reason for his absence is that he and the dwarves stopped coming along by choice. Which is it? The two lines just don’t fit together, and creates a clunky, chunky dialogue. (Side note, I loved the delivery of “ITS EMBARRASSING.”)

September 28, 2015 at 10:37 pm #308695WiddyParticipantAs a whole, I liked this episode… It was by no stretch my favorite, but I did enjoy it.
LIKES
First, many characters seemed very confident. For instance, I took account of Zelena, Regina, Snow, Emma, and Merida.
I loved seeing a younger Emma; she was sooooooo cute. I like that she has ALWAYS been who she is, and nothing can change that.
I loved seeing Elliot Knight as the “usher.”
Along with many of you, I was highly impressed by the CGI in this episode. FTL and the twister looked MARVELOUS.
In the very first scene with (Sir-?) Arthur, Sir Lancelot, and Sir Kay (?), I fell in love with their sass.
On that note, the sass war between Regina and Hook was just straight up beautiful. 🙂
I thoroughly liked the twist that the dagger was a portion of Excalibur. This will be interesting to see how it unfolds throughout the season. Why were they separated? What would happen if they were put back together?
Of course, Regina’s one liners will NEVER get old.
I actually enjoyed seeing DO Rumple inside Emma’s head. It was interesting to see how it affected her decision making throughout the episode.
I liked that they utilized Zelena in the episode. I know many of you are annoyed with her, but I love her to death (and back… get it, because she died…. HA! HA! HA!…. Okay… Moving on with my life.)
I enjoyed seeing the Star Wars references throughout the episode (choking scenes and Hook and Henry’s scene).I absolutely ADORED the rose that Blue gave Belle… It ties in perfectly with the Beauty and the Beast story, and it allows Belle to be a part of the story without her focus being on Rumple.
Overall, Zelena cracked me up.
I liked seeing the wisps from Brave… That was cool.
I loved seeing Merida on the small screen.
She bonded very well with Emma, too.
I enjoyed learning an official name for the severe nurse.
I liked watching that Robin was able to tell that Zelena was impersonating Regina so quickly.
During the twister, I loved seeing Henry protect Roland.
Watching Hook encourage Emma not to give in to the darkness was beautiful.
When Emma gave Regina her dagger and her trust, it showed true character development between the two.
I liked that the entry to Camelot looks like Disneyland.
I loved everyone’s Camelot clothes, sheriff Sneezy, and of course, the powerful and majestic Dark Swan. JMo is boss at life in my mind right now. And, as usual, the score was PHENOMENAL!!
DislikesI was very confused about the DO vault scene.
The outfit was strange.
She didn’t seem like Emma should seem.
I need a real explanation.
I love Blue, but she was so unnecessary.
Ginny’s wig was just not okay. The apprentice’s death and wand felt VERY forced.
Zelena kissing and manipulating Robin is just not cool.
Hook’s deception of Henry was NOT okay. If he ever wants to be even the slightest bit of a father figure to Henry, he needs to at least try (He should also shave, but that’s just my life problems).
I was freaked out by Zelena’s had cut off scene. Bleahugh! The whole Camelot prophecy was very unexplained.
I WAS ABOUT READY TO GO TO THE WRITERS ROOM AND SMACK THEM ACROSS THE FACE WITH THE WHOLE AMNESIA THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also feel so bad for Henry, Roland, and baby Neal for having to suffer through this craziness.
Overall, I give the episode a 69.697%.

September 28, 2015 at 10:45 pm #308696SapphireParticipantAdding a dislike that more’s a quibble than anything but…Merida’s hair in the promo photos was a very natural and good red. The wig she’s sporting though is like someone dumped a vat of neon paint on her head. She looks like a cartoon instead of ONCE’s human version.
Agree 100%. This was the first thing I noticed about her. I would go back and forth between trying to pay attention to the actual scene and staring at Merida’s hair.
Keeper of Regina's book of magic
September 28, 2015 at 11:51 pm #308699nevermoreParticipantOverall, I’d give this episode a solid 8/10.
Liked:
Mini-Emma was adorable!
“Your turn”. Brilliant.
RumpleDO as an evil version of Clippit to the Dark One magic. Loved every minute of it, and the explanation wasn’t ridiculous. RC seems to be having fun with the role, which is nice. Of course, it makes me wonder whether all DOs externalize the dark power, or anthropomorphize it. (RumpleDO seems to suggest that it isn’t the case, but if so, wouldn’t it have been more effective for the DO power/Emma’s subconscious to choose as an embodiment of the DOpower a person Emma would like/trust/love?)
Hook and Regina. I didn’t think I would, but I enjoyed the squabble.
Leroy. “Twister!!!” | Regina: “Out, dwarves, adults only.” Silly, but amusing.
The Rose. Ok, the jar would be mildly impractical, but that was a lovely touch.
We have a new ship! Sword/Dagger must be reunited!
Emma was thinking through her condition. I kind of liked that she chose Regina to keep the dagger. It made sense.
” You with the broom! A little help here”
Neutral/Unimpressed:
Zelena. The opera villain aspect is a bit much. And enough with the hand chopping already! We now have two characters that have had their hand lobed off on this show — granted, Zelena reattaches hers right away, but still, can we stop chopping off appendages please? Isn’t it enough that hearts can be removed at will? I realize this kind of detachable body part thing is a big part of fairy tales and folklore more generally, but if A&E want to go there, why go to the most tired trope in the movie industry since “Luke, I am your father”?
The Blue Fairy is, as usual, a throw away character. Can’t A&E find a more substantial use for her?
The Apprentice, behold the deus ex machina intervention, and then gets promptly killed off. Really?
Actively disliked:
The ending. Seriously, amnesia? Someone needs to check if there’s been a massive benzodiazepine spill in the Enchanted Forest. Contaminated water sources, maybe? Cause it sure happens a lot.
The narrative structure, whereby Camelot/Arthur bracket the rest of the action without really interweaving with it in any effective way. Right now, they feel like plot devices, and it would be nice to have an opportunity to invest in these characters right off the bat. Otherwise, they feel like props — which, arguably, they are, but how about at least trying to create the illusion that they matter beyond the Dark Swan story? This is exacerbated by the fact that their armor and capes look like they’re fresh out of the dry cleaner. How about a little mud, maybe? I’m not asking for Game of Thrones level of crud, just a bit less pristine polyester. Sprinkle some dust on it, guys!
Crackpot theory
So, there was the one bit of dialogue by Zelena I thought sounded weird: the moment when she says “The pregnancy really changed me. I’ll do anything to free Emma of the darkness.”
Did anyone else find the way she formulates this a little odd? Not “I’ll do anything to get rid this world of the darkness to protect my child” (which is what Robin suggests a few lines before). Not “I’ll do anything to save Emma.” So here’s the crazy theory. If anyone here has played the video game Dragon Age Origins, there is a plot twist, that, without spoiling too much (though it’s from 2010, so fair game at this point), essentially has one of the main characters take upon their unborn child the darkness destined for the protagonist. Because this is an unborn child, what would otherwise kill or corrupt the protagonist (an adult) would react differently with the embryo, and effectively transform it into something completely other — a deity of sorts, we are led to understand. So, here’s the crackpot theory — what if Zelena wants to turn her unborn child into the Dark One? I’m sure I’m reading into this, and I doubt A&E will go there, but knowing how they write and that wording matters, it seems to me that Zelena is planning something.
September 29, 2015 at 8:08 am #308712TheWatcherParticipantThat’s actually a great idea, Nevermore. We saw last season it is possible to transfer darkness into a “pure vessel” as was done with unborn emma and Lily. Perhaps that will be there solution, take the darkness out of Emma and put it in Zelena’s baby. Should….should I make a thread?
Also, I meant to mention this and might as well now: Something I noticed and really liked was that Zelena seemed…somewhat noble, didn’t she? In some way? She was kind of mama-bearish this episode. Granted I only saw the ep once but didn’t Zelena basically say she planned on going back to Oz to raise her kid alone and not be bothered by the heroes anymore. I mean…that’s….kind of…good in an “evil” sort of way. I mean I think we were all expecting Zelena to be using this baby to actively screw up her sisters life but she basically said “Forget this crap, I’m outta here” and I think…that would have been okay, provided Robin and Regina and Roland all have visitation rights and she actually cares for the child (which I really believe Zelena does now). Hmmm. I am really looking forward to this arc.

She did, but it wasn’t for the safety of her child. Her reasons were that even though people feared her in OZ she was in control there and she wanted to take the baby to a place where it would grow to only love her.
September 29, 2015 at 11:36 am #308739BelleOfTheBallParticipantOkay so lots to say about this episode. As far as season openers go, I liked it. It made me excited to see where they are going to take the season. I know in the past I have been iffy on some season openers (cough frozen cough), but I think they set up a pretty good story line for this season… with the exception of amnesia… but we will get there.
LIKES
– “Your turn”. Best line of the episode in my opinion. Well timed and I cant wait to see more of Lancelot (assuming Cora didn’t actually kill him).
-Belle and her rose. This one I am only putting in the like category because of my deep love for all things Beauty and the Beast. I was like a kid in a candy shop when the rose appeared (and in its glass casing!). However, i do wonder what the point of the rose is from a writers standpoint. I understand that Blue made it so Belle can return before her Rumple dies. But at the end of the episode, the heroes return and so little time has passed in Storybrooke that the rose seems mildly useless. I get that it was 6 weeks over in Camelot, but if time works differently (or they kind of skipped back in time?) what is the point of the rose? As far as Rumple is concerned, Belle could have just gone out for some groceries. She wasnt missing long Storybrook time. So whats the point of the rose? Its rather heavy to lug around for her to only be gone 10 minutes our time.
-Unlike what many people have said before me, I didn’t mind Emma rising from the goo. If she disappeared in a cloud of DO smoke, where else would it take her but the vault? It makes sense that her DO journey would start there only because she got the curse in a very different way than Rumple. If it had just thrown her onto the ground of the EF i think I would have been more confused. It makes sense that she ended up in the EF simply because of the vault and that where she is “born” as the DO. Also, as someone had mentioned before me (sorry i couldn’t find the post to quote!) we dont know Rumple didnt go to the goo. Just because we didnt see it, doesnt mean it didnt happen. If I remember correctly, they didnt show much after he stabbed Zozo. So he may have gotten swept up and reborn just like Emma.
-Merida. Now, I have not actually seen Brave, but i know quite a lot about the movie anyway. And from what i can tell, Merida’s character is spot on. Her red hair didn’t bother me, i still thought it looked good on her. I’m not sure I would have been so forgiving to someone who had almost just crushed my heart…. probably would have fled the scene the moment i got my heart back. But i can assume that’s to set up a later interaction and i’ll go with it.
-RumpleDO and Emma were perfect together. They made the episode as good as it was. JMo did a fantastic job reacting to Emmas struggle and it was nice to see Bobby play mysterious imp Rumple again. All i can say is I hope there is much much more where that came from.
-Hook stopping Snow from using the dagger against Emma. I feel like he understands her so well. Watching him pull her out from the darkness was just beautiful. It made my little shipper heart happy =)
DISLIKES
-Hook and Henry’s interaction. Now don’t get me wrong. I am a big Hook fan. And throughout most of the episode I understood his desperation. If i put myself in his shoes and I just watched the person I love get swept up by a giant vortex of Evil, I would be pretty frantic to find her and save her too *especially with his familiarity with the darkness. Snowing has run a kingdom before and know how to deal with many situations and remain calm all the same. They have learned not to be so desperate and to look at the problem from all angles. But Hook sees things only one way. So I get it. And it didnt bother me. What did bother me was him manipulating Henry. That whole scene was just wrong. And i’m going to leave it at that.
– How did Snow not go off the hinges when her daughter turned one of the dwarfs to stone? I know she was afraid and all but i expected a “listen here young lady” speech.
-Zelina. Just Zelina. No one in the gang wants her around, you have her locked up in a cell…. why not just let her go back to Oz? She doesnt want to be you anymore, Regina. She just wants to have her child and have it love her. If you let her go back to Oz, she will be out of your hair. I just dont understand why they dragged her to Camelot either.. with the cuff on her, they could have put some spell on her cell door so no one can go in and left her in Storybrooke. I just don’t understand that whole plot line. And the constant reminder of what she did to Robin is just NOT okay.. family show or not.
-And the big one… WHY DOESNT ANYONE HAVE THEIR MEMORIES. AGAIN. Adam. Eddie. You have used this same plot device so many times you are generally frightening me that you can’t come up with anything else. What was wrong with simply leaving the audience in the dark?? You could have done the exact same scene with some vague dialogue (“Emma it wasn’t our fault.” or “Emma we didn’t mean to” or even “Emma please listen”). The audience wouldn’t know what happened but we wouldn’t be left with clueless main characters YET AGAIN. The season could have still been about the audiences journey to discover 6 weeks of Camelot. Why do the characters always have to discover with us? just. Ugh. There are no words for my frustrations in this matter.
-Are we time jumping again?… Or are we just going to go with the whole “Time works differently” excuse again?
Questions:
So how long has Merlin actually been missing? Because Arthur seems to know him and know his prophesies but he also laughs when Emma asks how long he has been missing for.
Sorry this ended up being such a long post!
September 29, 2015 at 11:48 am #308741RumplesGirlKeymasterSo how long has Merlin actually been missing? Because Arthur seems to know him and know his prophesies but he also laughs when Emma asks how long he has been missing for.
I dunno. The time line is such a mess because we know that the Darkness is OLD, like super old and that the dagger is at least 300 years, and obviously a bit older since Zoso was not the first Dark One. However Arthur and the his friends haven’t aged since he pulled the Sword from the Stone so either 1) time bubble in Camelot OR 2) Arthur pulled the Sword not so long ago–pre Snowing’s first wedding since he and Lance were still on good terms.
