Ok, just got a chance to watch it, so without reading other comments.
I’d say an 8/10, and a pretty strong episode overall, minus the inconsistencies in the magic rules from previous seasons.
Liked:
This episode managed to cram a lot in, and that’s a pleasant change, since in recent seasons OUAT has often felt watered down.
Merlin’s out of the tree! Woot! I’m glad we won’t have to wait until the end of the season for that to happen.
Dark!Emma and the Violet plot line. That was pretty delightfully manipulative.
Regina’s one liners.
The show actually acknowledged Baelfire’s centrality to multiple characters’ arcs. Two seasons too late, in my opinion, but it’s nice to have Neal come up as a lingering presence, and to see Henry, Emma, and Rumple written in such a way that acknowledges their loss.
Meh:
What is this crazy stuff with Merida and Rumple??? First off, why is bravery = swinging heavy metal sword in the middle of the woods? How did Merida know about the book? Also, why did she use an arrow to get into Gold’s shop? If it was locked — which it didn’t appear to be — I don’t think that an arrow through the door works the same way as a bullet through the lock. Seriously. That whole think is ridiculous.
Disliked:
The dreamcatcher inconsistencies — why is it suddenly a dark-magic-only artifact???
What was that with the Carnival/BlockParty? It seemed totally gratuitous.

Henry confirms that he’s 13 now (somehow, timeline is wonky but I always take their words for it if it’s in canon and then twist my spreadsheet backwards to make it work). That’s how old his father was when Rumple became the DO. So many feels.

October 26, 2015 at 5:02 pm #310956nonnieParticipantThe first time Emma used a dreamcatcher in season 2 she used light magic, didn’t she? But this time Regina says that using dreamcatcher magic/ putting spellings on dreamcatchers/whatever involves dark magic.
Neal told Emma that the DREAM CATCHERS involved a lot of magic and he withdrew from it … I think the only reason Neal kept the dream catcher was it reminded him of his time with Emma. I think it depends upon who is using the dream catcher and for what purpose.
Gold taught Emma how to use it in the episode where CORA disguised herself as Regina and supposedly killed Archie. They used the dream catcher on Pongo. Emma used white magic then…. now she used dark magic.
October 26, 2015 at 5:20 pm #310958emmanotherlifeParticipantHenry shouldn’t get to feel sorry for himself after lying to Emma to get her out of the house. But okay, he’s a teenager, and teenagers sulk. Regina shouldn’t be critical of Emma manipulating Henry’s feelings, since Regina and Henry manipulated Emma’s feelings.
True….all true. That angered me so much last night.

You mean Rumple, was him that said to Emma that Dreamcatchers involved magic, because Neal never talked to Emma about dreamcatchers and magic, Emma was the one that explained neal what a dreamcatcher was and what was for, in this case to catch bad dreams and let the good ones in. But Neal obvious kept the dreamcatcher bc of Emma and to try not to have nightmares due to all the things that happened to him and have good ones, probably about Emma and the dreams they had.
"I offended you with my opinion? Ha, you should hear the ones I keep to myself".

Wait a minute, wait a minute, Regina loved Henry with everything in her soul, mind, and heart, and he knew that! Henry only started to feel the way that he did when Regina told him that she had adopted him, thus beginning the concerns of whether she loved him or not, and combine that with that stupid storybook, and that’s where things went sour! Henry was happy for ten years! He was happy, and it didn’t start till he learned he was adopted and that stupid book pushed him, and he wasn’t in therapy for years, by the way Episode 2 broke it down, I’d say only a month or so before Emma got to town, and when you look at it from Regina’s point of view, she was cornered with a no win situation and did the only thing she could think of, it could have been worse…instead of therapy she could have went to her crypt, whipped up a potion and gave it to Henry, but she didn’t.
.
.
I do not doubt that REGINA loved/ loves Henry that was why she was working so hard to keep him….. But Henry already knew something in SB was not right … he was getting older but his class mates were not. Regina sent him to Archie to make him doubt himself he was in sessions for months.
As for the book SNOW gave it to him because she saw a young boy in pain, introverted and withdrawn from everyone around him. She wanted to give him HOPE…. even without the book HENRY knew something was wrong. It wasn’t until HENRY read the book that he realized his step mother was the EVIL QUEEN.As for REGINA not giving HENRY a potion to love her… I think Regina already was dissatisfied with her curse because for 28 years every thing was the same in SB… BORING. I also thinks from what she had said and done in the past she did not want to be like CORA and giving Henry a potion to get love would have been a CORA thing… REGINA wanted real love from HENRY not a drugged love … who would want a STEPFORD SON?
YES …. EMMA stole Violets heart in CAMELOT to get a broken heart-ed tear to get MERLIN out of the tree to try and break the curse she is under…. I think she was trying to make up for her mis-deed by making HENRY the hero to finds the horse and brings it back to VIOLET. THIS was a one time event as apposed to months of therapy.
I also think that EMMA planned HENRY finding out about her treachery that is why she took the ONE VIOLETS DREAM CATCHER OF MEMORIES from the garage and put it in the house where it could be found easily. I think she knew Henry would see the results. I think that was why EMMA cried.
Wicked REGAL
I dO enjoy your comments as it makes me reevaluate my own… look forward to more of your posts.NONNIE

Now I’m confused….that actually makes a lot of sense…why else would Emma just have Violet’s memories sitting around like that??!! I look forward to more of your posts too Nonnie!!!
But on another note, seeing that StableQueen scene made me realize something….I think I really miss Daniel! I mean, Robin Hood is good for Regina, but Daniel was….Daniel was just a whole other level of special and I just….I miss Daniel! Don’t get me wrong, I’m still an OutlawQueen, but I was a StableQueen first!

Henry being 13 kind of adds up timeline wise. He was 11 in season 1, 12 in season 2 when Emma and Snow got back from the EF when Cora was running amok
Then you’ve got the missing year plus season 4 so it makes sense that he would be 13 now (though I wish they’d show birthdays on this show). Hopefully that means Emma will be 30 soon and they will actually show us that birthday.
Likes:
“We’re good judges of character”- Says the people who were happy for Zelena to be their midwife despite all the signs pointing to her being the Wicked Witch. LOL.
Charming teasing Henry about his girlfriend and Regina’s reaction to it- I love the little family moments and it’s a shame the show doesn’t have more of them.
Regina’s reaction towards Hook offering dating tips to Henry- Hook always makes innocent things sound seedy so I’m glad Regina basically told him to back off.
The Nealfire references- I think one of the annoying things about Neal’s death isn’t so much that he died, it’s that his death wasn’t given the emotional consequences it deserved. Everyone seemed to just move on and forget him. It’s nice that he hasn’t been completely forgotten but they really needed to deal with the emotional fallout in season 3 rather than throwing the audience some scraps here and there.
Emma crying over the dreamcatcher- She still feels upset over the loss of Neal! It’s a shame we didn’t see this in earlier seasons.
Henry being head over heels in love with violet- Even though we know it’s not going to last, it is adorable. The romantic dinner date was so cute. “It’s soda”- no it’s not it’s coke, a pepsi to be precise. Is it just a British thing to call “soda” coke or what?
Violet breaking Henry’s heart- Even though it’s not true, I liked how Violet let him down gently because she didn’t feel the same way about him rather than having her deliberately leading him on only to break his heart when her true colours are revealed.
Emma and Henry bonding and talking about Neal- Why couldn’t we have had some of this emotionality before?
Regina getting upset over Daniel- It’s nice that she still feels the hurt of Daniel’s death rather than, just because she’s with Robin now, it’s brushed aside.
Skin Deep is in the book!- However, if Rumple is in the book, how the hell did Henry not realise who Mr Gold was in season 1?
Peter selling pumpkins- “Peter, Peter, Pumpkin eater. Had a wife but couldn’t keep her;: He put her in a pumpkin shell: And there he kept her very well.”
Emma releasing Merlin- JMo’s acting was brilliant. From the look on her face you could tell Emma just got a taste of the darkness and she liked it.
Hook having limited screentime- It’s better when the pirate is used sparingly rather than forced into every scene.
The thought of Belle makes Rumple brave- It’s sheer RumBelle goodness.
Mixed:
How many stairs does Emma have to her house?- Although it didn’t take her long per se to walk down the steps to get to the dreamcatcher shed, it seemed to be unnaturally long for a tv show. She just kept walking and walking and walking. It was just odd, there’s not normally that many stairs for a character to walk down.
Regina taking the moral high ground- Whilst in that particular case I think Regina was right to call Emma out, it does seem a bit hypocritical considering the things Regina has done in the past especially taking Belle’s heart etc.
Dislikes:
The whole changing yourself for someone you like debate- Emma makes a valid point but then it’s undermined by the whole if Regina didn’t change, she wouldn’t be with Robin. I think that’s sending a mixed message and it’s not a message the show should be sending. They should’ve just left it at Emma’s point. Even Regina’s answer to Henry about not being like all the other boys in Camelot seems a bit weak because that’s not about Henry being himself, that’s about Henry making himself stand out from the crowd. It’s kind of like, if all the other boys in Camelot were like Henry, then Henry should change to make himself more noticeable. It’s not a good message to be sending, especially to young viewers that are Henry’s age.
Henry manipulating Emma- He pulled the same trick with Regina in season 2. Whilst the call backs to the decent seasons make the story stronger, it’s annoying how Henry manipulates his mothers when they are in a vulnerable state teetering on the edge of darkness. Henry’s actions compound the situation because he’s not spending time with his mothers because he wants to spend time with them, he doing because he’s after something or he’s been put up to it, and in a way that is a betrayal which then causes hurt and tips the balance towards darkness.
Can Merida not open doors normally? Does she always have to make a dramatic entrance?
Not enough Belle- The show is wasting Emilie though hopefully this should change next week.
Overall I enjoyed this episode and it has definitely been the strongest one of season 5 so far. I liked the call backs to the decent seasons and it just felt more character driven rather than ship driven or plot driven. I give this episode 8/10.

Actually it’s coke down in the southern USA too (no matter what brand).
Otherwise it’s soda or pop
Skin Deep is in the book!- However, if Rumple is in the book, how the hell did Henry not realise who Mr Gold was in season 1?
Uh. That’s a good question that I didn’t even realize

<script async=”” src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>Neal and EMMA found the DREAM CATCHER in Tallahassee when they went in the hotel room after the family left. Emma found the dream catcher one of the kids had left and NEAL back peddle away from it saying it could be used for more than catching dreams. Later it was seen in his NY apartment.
Gold and Emma used a dream catcher on PONGO to “see” fake Regina / Cora kill Archie…. it was a false vision. Not sure if there were any more dream catcher references but if I remember more I will post them.
