Liked:
The RumBelle scene- RumBelle are literally the only reason I’m really watching Once now.
DO Clippy’s impression of Merlin- How anyone manages to keep a straight face when RC puts on the different accents is a miracle.
Zelena- When Zelena becomes one of the positives about an episode, you know the series has passed the point of no return. “Shut up. I was a fake midwife, I know the drill!” Zelena is actually one of my favourite characters of season 5.
Whale- His whole scene was hilarious. Storybrooke has lost it’s small town feel.
Regina supporting Emma- Regina has been so much supportive of Emma during this difficult period in her life especially more than Hook. In fact so much so, I’d say Emma’s real love story on Once is SwanQueen. It’s at least healthier than CS.
Emma acknowledging that Zelena killed Neal and Marian- Finally! It was about time!
Mixed:
Operation Light Swan- The idea of wanting the darkness out of Emma is ok, it’s the execution of said idea. What the writers want us to think and what we’re actually seeing on screen are two totally different things. The writers want us to think that Hook is desperate to save the love of his life from a terrible fate. What we’re seeing is that Hook is rejecting Emma because she’s not the woman he wants her to be. His actions are very controlling. He’s demanding, he doesn’t care what other people think or their opinions, he is just an unpleasant individual and the more this season goes on, the worse he gets.
Emma saving Hook after he jumps off the building- Whilst it may have been the right thing to do, it was such a stupid idea of Hook’s in the first place. Emma should’ve let him go splat!
Regina refusing to let Zelena protect herself and her child- Whilst it was nice to get WickedSisters feels from Regina promising to protect Zelena, at the same time it was a stupid idea to leave Zelena defenceless against Emma.
Disliked:
Hook- Just Hook. It would take too long to list why Hook is a complete and utter arsehole (he seems worse than usual this season) but keeping mementoes of your past kills is just disturbing and a big red flashing neon warning sign. The fact that Hook kept them s “trophies” is just wrong. The whole “that all changed when I met you” crap is very eyebrow raising. People don’t just change who they are, to parade the notion the love changes everything is unhealthy. There’s a difference between being the best you can be and being someone completely different from who you are. Hook proclaims he’s “changed” and become good because of being with Emma. So is he going to turn around and blackmail her saying that unless she stays with him, he’s going to go back to his old ways and it’s all her fault because she left him? CS is such a troubling relationship. If they were a real couple, you would be looking at an emotionally abusive relationship yet the show is trying to present it as “true love”. It is wrong on so many levels.
Snowing giving up on Emma- All they’re talk of hope and never giving up in the earlier seasons has disappeared now. The characters are shadows of their former selves.
Hook turning against Emma- We’ve seen that both Emma and Rumple as dark ones still loved those they cared about so why is Hook any different?

Keeper of FelixNovember 16, 2015 at 6:51 pm #312690nevermoreParticipantI think I would have actually liked this episode if I had started to watch OUAT in Season 5, and only knew about the previous seasons from reading the summaries on Wikipedia. Or better yet, if I had someone summarize those summaries to me. As a standalone episode, it’s not bad. But because it completely throws out much of the mythos OUAT had established up until now, it felt like a hot mess.
Liked:
David Anders was hilarious. Completely in character for Blaine from iZombie, and not even trying to reprise Dr Whale. Serves OUAT right for relegating him to forgotten character island. And since he’s now a central character on a much fresher (and arguably smarter) show, it’s OUAT’s loss.
Again, Zelena is really shining this season.
Regina, and her dialogues with Emma. I’m coming over to the SQ side 🙂
Rumple and Belle cameo. The crossbow was hilarious. Also, Rumple as the voice of wisdom is actually sort of delightful.
Dislike:
Squid Ink. No, really, squid ink? Well, at least it’s not the mushroom of doom.
Everything that essentially tossed out all previously established cosmology, which was pretty much most of the episode. There can be more than one DO? You can resist a dagger’s command? What?
The DO has to somehow be “aware” that they are the DO to hear voices or have powers? You could not be aware of the fact that you are the DO? I’m sorry, that’s ridiculous.
Why is Hook qualitatively different from all other DOs? I have trouble buying that it’s because he’s created in a different way — Merlin’s magic is from the HG, which means that its corrupted version should be the same as the original corrupted version that affected Nimue.
And the one that really takes the cake for me — you can put all the darkness into a person, and then kill that person, and that kills the darkness? I thought magic cannot be destroyed? Haven’t we established with Rumple last season that if the host dies, the DO still remains in some capacity and can still animate what’s at that point a corpse? Or something? Or did we now go back to Cora’s explanation that it’ll dissipate? And why, exactly, did “tethering” Hook to the sword produce a second DO curse? Why didn’t Merlin become the DO when he got tethered to the sword? All of this was very handwavy and unsatisfying.
Either way, this feels like sloppy worldbuilding, and that’s starting to affect the quality of this show in a major way.
Emma was Ok with letting Neal die, but no price is too high to save Hook? Ok, then. But just to be clear, this is a guy who keeps trophies from his victims, right? And mind you, now that he’s on team hero and has repented, the mementos aren’t there to remind him of how he’s done bad things /erred — no, they are there to remind him that all can be forgiven.
Has OUAT drunkenly stumbled into Dexter territory this season?
November 16, 2015 at 6:59 pm #312694RumplesGirlKeymasterEmma saving Hook after he jumps off the building- Whilst it may have been the right thing to do, it was such a stupid idea of Hook’s in the first place. Emma should’ve let him go splat!
Suicide/physical harm to get a girl’s attention. I cannot with the morals of this show.

YAAAAAAS. I was laughing so hard. It was just straight up Blaine. (I love Blaine. Terror that he is.)
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"November 16, 2015 at 7:44 pm #312705The Swan PrincessParticipantWow that was a very interesting and surprising episode. Very well done show!
Favorites:
1) I loved the Hook being the dark one twist! It makes perfect sense (well in the terms of the plot not the logistics). I knew Emma was acting and trying to protect her family from knowing the truth about what happened in Camelot because she didn’t really do anything dark (except for the Henry thing), and the loss of one of her loved ones is the only thing I can see as something that would make her embrace the darkness in such a short time.
2) Jen’s acting was really good this episode. I could see Emma’s humanity showing through the crack of the Dark One persona she built.
3) I loved how when Charming got into Arthur’s tent Guinevere gave Arthur this look like “goodbye friend you’re on your own I’m out of this business”.
4) Zelana!!! Thank god for this woman and the light she brings to this show.
And I have this literary turn on, it’s fluid alliances and moralities. I just love that stuff. People working with each other and then turning against each other and forming new alliances and playing on that line between good and bad because there isn’t really good or bad it’s just people and what they have to do to protect their interests. Zelena working with Kilian only to show up seconds later and screw some stuff up but then they might still work together against Emma but maybe he’s lying to her it’s just AMAZING.
5) Hook got a new outfit, this dark one cloak. It’s a rare occurrence, like an eclipse. BTW I’m wondering can they keep this cloak? Like it’s free clothes.
6) It was cute that Henry and Hook marked a house for Hook and Emma. And it relates to one of the episode in season 4 when Henry searched for a house for Emma in the newspaper (it was in season 4 right? I don’t remember which episode it was).
Mixed:
1) Dr. Whale. On one hand it’s always good to see him and HE WAS HILARIOUS. But on the other hand, it’s sad to see him only when there’s a medical emergency. And every time I see him I get reminded of Frankenwolf and the lost opportunity. Especially with Ruby in the following episode it was just super hard. And WTH was that hair seriously like I know he’s on iZombie but at least put on a wig or something, the women do it all the time.
And the poor thing got thrown to the wall again LOL
2) If Hook was the Dark One all this time then how could he not see visions of the darkness? Although I’m ready to wait about that topic because I believe the writers will explain it. Dark One Clippy was a big thing this season, we saw him just last episode, there’s no way they forgot about it. Like they’re stupid, but not that stupid, right…?
Least Favorites:
1) Regina felt completely out of character to me. Using the dagger I could kind of understand, because we all knew she was going to use the dagger eventually and she was trying to help Emma, but then in Storybrooke she was suddenly like “let’s kill the Dark One there is no Emma anymore”. It was too much, and didn’t felt like her at all. And the Charming too were like “no Emma in there nope” which was very weird. Hook is the only one who was right about that thing.
2) So the real reason why Emma is not ready to give up on the darkness is… She’s afraid to move in with her boyfriend? Like come on.
3) I did not understand how Hook became the Dark One. Like he was dying and she tethered his name to the sword instead of Merlin like how could she do that? Is it that easy? We only saw it so far with people who already has powers that came from the sword/grail. Can you do it with any person and they become the dark one? And what happened to Merlin? Also how can the Dark Curse be transferred between people that way because you can’t stab someone with the broken half of the sword.
4) I honestly thought that Emma chose to wear the black leather clothes and the white bun+red lipstick to make everyone think that she’s EVIL, but it appears that she got those in a magical makeover when she saved Hook? Is this her official Dark One look? Because she still was in the Enchanted Forest so she was supposed to be scaly this time!!!
You know what I can't continue with the dead people brought back to life list I'm out of space in the signature and now we have an underworld arc this is to much I quit why do you bring so many people back to life OUAT WHHHYYYY
November 16, 2015 at 11:47 pm #312728PheeParticipantI don’t know. This episode answered questions but the answers were horrible and weird and made Emma’s hero journey all about a guy, which I find offensive on many levels.
Remember how we speculated that we wanted Emma to beat the darkness by finding the strength within herself to overcome it, and what an inspirational story that would be? *SIGH*
Regina and Emma’s conversation in Camelot
Best scene of the ep IMO. Emma had known that Regina would be the best one to have the Dagger because she’d have the balls to use it as was necessary, and we actually saw it happen. I may have issues with the specifics of the revelation that Emma had thanks to Regina pushing her like that, but regardless, the fact that Regina gave her that tough love was nice to see.
Hook apparently kept trophies of all his kills. Sociopaths do that. Not men who are one half of a story being pushed on us as an all time great love story.
Sociopath!Hook would have been a much more interesting character. If anything, this revelation that he kept these trophies (and still wears them to this day) makes his supposed overnight redemption more laughable. More thoughtful writers could have explored his dark side while still giving us glimpses of his humanity along the way and building towards there being a believable change in him.
My fave bad guy over on “Arrow”, he’s an assassin who tattooed the names of his contract kills all over his torso, one of those names being the brother of one of the main characters. They wrote him as being a snarky word-I-can’t-say-on-this-forum who did his thing and didn’t give a crap about anyone else, but they still gave him a soft spot when it came to his daughter. They built on that to give him a great little arc that led up to a self sacrifical moment.
He’s a recurring character who has only been in a handful of eps over the course of 3 seasons, and had 1 ep’s worth of flashbacks to fill in some of his backstory. When I compare what was accomplished with that character with so little air time, to the potential the OUAT writers have had with Hook which they just wasted, it really bums me out. He could have been a really interesting, layered, dark character with a well forged and earned redemption arc. *SIGH*
Charming: her name is SNOW WHITE not Mary Margaret. GAH.
My soul dies a little every time Charming calls the love of his life by her fake name.

Can I please just marry your whole “dislike” list? Because YES, THAT!
November 17, 2015 at 9:29 pm #312786onceaholicParticipantLIKED
All scenes with Regina, though they were brief.
Another cute baby.
Zelena.
DISLIKED
Hook as the Dark One despite not displaying any of Emma’ symptoms. I am having a hard time believing that not knowing/not remembering=no symptoms, especially regarding the voices.
EDIT:
I forgot to add….
Could anyone explain to me
1) why black goo came out of Merlin, who is supposed to be only about light magic?
2) why waving excalibur over Hook turned him another DO, even though Excalibur is supposed to represent the weapon that can kill the darkness? (or does it kill the light, too? can’t remember).
TIA

November 17, 2015 at 11:28 pm #312789onceaholicParticipantRegina, and her dialogues with Emma. I’m coming over to the SQ side
Up until now, I never really understood why people thought that SwanQueen was endgame. Especially as it would be inappropriate given that
1) Regina is Emma’s step-grandmother
2)Regina tried to kill Emma as a baby (which still hasn’t been addressed!).
3) The writers keep on shoving Captain Swan and Outlaw Queen in our faces.
Now I get it.
Honestly, it was as if Emma doesn’t want to move in with Hook because she is attracted to Regina and has stronger feelings for her than she has for Hook, but doesn’t want to say. lol. This baiting is just too much.

To be honest…SwanQueen technically has more groundwork than both Captain Swan and Outlaw Queen….had it not been for those three reasons listed above, especially number 1, it wouldn’t be hard for all of us to jump aboard the ship considering all this baiting has made it the more logical one of the three.

Agreed. I never thought I’d actually root for SwanQueen, but at the moment it’s one of the 3 relationships that has the most solid foundations (After RumBelle and Snowing of course 😛 )
OQ is starting to grow on me in the sense that so long as you don’t go digging too deeply into the relationship, it seems OK.
CS is just one big black hole of mess that only grows in size with each passing episode.
