Keeper Of Tamara's Taser , Jafar's Staff, Kitsis’s Glasses , Ariel’s Tail, Dopey's Hat , Peter Pan’s Shadow, Outfit, & Pied Cloak,Red Queen's Castle, White Rabbit's Power To World Hop, Zelena's BroomStick, & ALL MAGICI still think that before Storybrooke was created it was much more difficult to travel to the land without magic. We actually only know of four ways. The wardrobe, a bean, the silver slippers, and the curse. All the other ways, the hat, the water, the rabbit, the mirrors, the black fairy’s wand, the coconut all would have not worked until after Storybrooke existed and was magical. It is a magical land within the land without magic therefore the regular portals all work now.

This makes some sense of it. I recall an episode in Season 2 where someone says The Dark Curse “broke down the walls or barriers between worlds” or something to that effect. But there was also the Apprentice’s portal and door making ability which we never saw Rumple try to take advantage of, right? And was it ever explained why he didn’t try using the magic tree introduced in Pilot?

I believe Blue Fairy said it was the only magic tree left and Geppetto used it to make the wardrobe. And even then, only two people could use it. Once had been spent on Pinochio, and the other on Emma, and Rump was incarcerated at the time.
But if u mean before all that? I’m going to say because after he had knowledge of the future, he knew the only way he was going to find Bae was through Emma. Perhaps before then he simply didn’t know. He also couldn’t attempt to attack the apprentice or anything since it seems Apprentice may have been more powerful(?).
Honestly, with OUAT u just gotta roll with the flow and not think about the logistics.
