ON ABC’S ‘ONCE UPON A TIME’“Where Bluebirds Fly” – In flashback, Zelena befriends a young woodcutter who has been cursed and turns to her for help finding a new heart. Zelena is forced to choose between keeping her powers and her friendship with him. Meanwhile, in Storybrooke, Zelena decides to take on the Black Fairy and put a stop to her, once and for all, against Regina’s wishes, and the Charmings disagree over Emma and Hook’s wedding plans, on “Once Upon a Time,” SUNDAY, APRIL 23 (8:00–9:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network.
“Once Upon a Time” stars Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White/Mary Margaret, Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, Lana Parrilla as the Evil Queen/Regina, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David, Emilie de Ravin as Belle, Colin O’Donoghue as Hook, Jared S. Gilmore as Henry Mills, Rebecca Mader as the Wicked Witch/Zelena and Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold.

..but why? How does having a friend make her lose her powers? Were they in love?

She was a literal prodigy as a baby, and even Rumple said in his note to Cora that her magic was the most powerful….dark magic doesn’t even affect her. It’s going to be interesting seeing the magic prodigy go up against the Black Fairy, who said she basically created dark magic.
However…I’m wondering about this “friendship” between Zelena & the Tin Man. And like @TheWatcher said…why would it cost her, her magic?!

I don’t know how that makes sense but okay.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"I’m guessing the friendship is when Zelena is still a child hence Young Zelena and Young Stanum. She’ll obviously rise to power and have to choose between love/friendship and power. She’ll choose power. The tin man is a POC so he is probably going to die because that is what they do to most POCs on this show eg Tamara, Marian, Merlin, Gus. Either that or Zelena will return to Oz to be with him and we’ll never hear of him again.

Feels like they were required to give Zelena at least one centric for the Season, so they’re doing it here. I guess it could at least serve as character development for her?
i actually think this episode is going to actually advance stuff. I think we will learn what the black fairys plans are for the final battle at the very least. She needs help from Zelena of all people.
