IN anticipation of Sunday’s show I am posting my favorite thread where our members state what they liked about the episode … I am so ready for this the press release looks like a really good show.

March 19, 2017 at 8:59 pm #334581RumplesGirlKeymasterGeneral: Nope.
It was an okay episode–over hyped but mostly okay–up until they did a ridiculous character shattering thing that made no sense given past canon and only works because the show will never be done retroactively destroying their characters and themes. In what universe would Baelfire ever order Rumple to give into the darkness and kill someone! None. So instead of Baelfire being the light inside of Rumple and constantly begging his father to stop giving into the darkness, as previously established, Bae is actually the reason Rumple was unable to avoid staying clean. Nonsense. Absolute nonsense.
Rating: 6/10
LIKED
–The CGI on the Ogres was fairly decent.
–I’ll give Hook credit here during his conversation with Archie. He normally just chooses to not tell Emma until everything comes undone so the fact that he wants to tell her and recognizes that decision has consequences…yes, good.
–“I already lost one son. I won’t lose another.”
–Really nice casting on the new teenage!Bae. He looks quite a bit like Dylan.
–“Queen Cobra”
–“I guess I’ll always be paying the price for what you did…what I did.” Yes, good!
MIXED
–Is it really supposed to be the First Ogres War? Wasn’t that before Baelfire was born, when Rumple ran away?
–Zelena and Robin’s team up is hard to process. On the one hand, this isn’t our Robin so he’s not the one Zelena raped. On the other hand, it’s still Robin and it’s hard to see Robin being chummy with Zelena after all the “history.
–“It’s just like when you needed the crutch to walk.” A true line to be sure but it’s also a bit on the nose. It’s always been perfectly fine as subtext that Rumple traded one crutch for another.
–The Beowulf parallel with Gideon trying to be a hero through questionable means. It felt forced since we’ve never heard anything of Beowulf or this point in Rumple/Bae’s life.
–The Blue Fairy forged Hrunting–a hero sword–but she couldn’t defeat the Dark One’s curse, had no hand in creating Excalibur and has been useless for years. I am so confused on how powerful she actually is!
DISLIKED
–Rumple tries to poison his son with a memory potion; this is an excellent way to establish a relationship! Rumple, stop taking the easy path. Try conversation!
–In no universe would the Baelfire we’ve seen in the past 6 years through these flashbacks have ever ordered Rumple to kill someone. Nonsense. Guess it’s super convenient that the character is dead and can be endlessly trashed on! Even more convenient that Baelfire was given a memory potion and thus has no idea about any of this!
–“You darkened your soul so our son wouldn’t have to.” What does it matter, Belle? His soul is already black and this doesn’t make up for anything he did in the past few seasons.
–What happened to telling Emma, Hook??? And how about you also tell Charming??

This was full of surprises…some good, others bad, but the episode was definetly interesting!
Liked:
Flashback Rumple is always a treat!
Mr. Gold being snarky with Sneaky Blue, whose technically responsible for him losing two sons.
Even though he’s not Robin Hood, I love Sean Maguire playing any role! Dark Robin Hood is very amusing, even if he is being a sneaky fox, pun intended.
Rumpelstilskin being a sentimental, protective, and caring father towards Baelfire in the past and Gideon in the present…excuse me while I go cry! He may have not been the best man, but he loves his sons more than anything.
“Grand Theft Sorcery isn’t my thing!” & “Queen Cobra” This is why I love Zelena sometimes!
Let the Dark OutlawQueen Romance Begin!
Mixed:
Umm…someone remind me, when was there a protection spell on the town line?
I like that Regina is willing to let Dark Robin go in order for him to find himself, but she should really encourage him to stop robbing before sending him out into the world.
I’m stunned…Baelfire ordered Rumple to kill someone.
Disliked:
Robin planning to run away with Zelena….hmm…Adam & Eddy really like to twist the knife in an already deep wound don’t they?
Sorry, but I refuse to believe Baelfire, Sweet Baelfire who wanted his father as far away from Dark Magic as possible, would darken his heart like this. If that’s the case, then even Henry can turn evil at this point!

Gideon and Rumple’s dynamic is great.
I like that this Robin is so different from the original Robin, and that it’s forcing Regina to reconsider the easy way out of simply separating herself from EQ. But they should’ve dealt with this when EQ was still around. At this point it just feels like they’re out of ideas and villains.
Ogres were amusing with their giant goblin armor — though now that I think about it, I thought they aren’t actually particularly intelligent? Definitely not crafty enough to forge Norse looking weapons — so who’s arming them?
I actually liked the Hook/Archie dialogue at the beginning. It was surprisingly self-aware on Hook’s part – the therapy sessions must be doing some good.

On the one hand, my favorite Rumple has always been the devoted father Rumple — it’s the side of his character that is the most credible and relatable, and the one that RC portrays in the most heartfelt way. On the other hand, what fresh retcon is this? Bae would have never, in a million years, compelled his father to use dark magic. And this wasn’t even under a moment of duress. He wasn’t physically threatened, it wasn’t to make Rumple defend himself or anyone from Beowolf — it was literally because he didn’t want to go relocate to another village. If he had forced Rumple to defend himself against Beowulf and his useless magic sword, that’d be one thing — but this seems like it was written in such a way as to show that Bae was really just petty. It was completely, utterly out of character, and the memory potion is just a little too convenient a way out — his heart would have physically darkened. So the same level of retconning and bad writing that they did to ‘darken’ Rumple when the plot needed they are now applying to try to make him sympathetic. Ugh

This would be the 2nd Ogre Wars. The first time around was when Bae was a baby.
What was going on with Beowulf’s proportions? Was he walking on stilts?
Well, if there ever was a good time to let Emma in on the whole “I might have inadvertently offed your grandaddy” problem, Hook spectacularly missed it.

Um, not much really. I think this may be the first Rumple flashback I’ve actively disliked.Murky
I’m not enthralled by the Gideon story. I did sort of like that Rumple took on more darkness (again at this point why not) to keep his son from doing it. But in general this isn’t working for me that well.Disliked
I continue to be uninterested in Wish Robin and Regina in general.Hook should just put on his big boy pants and tell Emma the truth. She’ll forgive him and forget all about it in two days. The whole family is ridiculously forgetful about all the bad things their friends do.
The retcon of Baelfire does not work. It was utterly out of character for him to force his father to kill someone, even a scummy guy like Beowulf.
March 19, 2017 at 9:41 pm #334600RumplesGirlKeymasterit was literally because he didn’t want to go relocate to another village
*a few months later*
“Hey dad, let’s go to an entirely different realm so that the darkness infesting your soul doesn’t continue to corrupt you!”
Makes total sense.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 19, 2017 at 9:52 pm #334602AKAParticipantI thought this episode had some really good moments. I give it a 8/10
Liked:
Rumple being a good dad in both the past and present. This is the Rumple I love the most a really caring dad who would do anything to protect his sons even darken his soul and jeopardize how his son perceives him
Regina’s I will always have to pay the price for what she did….what I did. GREAT character moment
Rumple and Blue Fairy’s conversation. Yes Blue it is partially your fault, she is such a powerless useless character
Belle understanding and not blaming Rumple for doing what he did to the blue fairy so that Gideon would not have to darken his soul.
Hook actually saying that he wanted to tell Emma the truth
Mixed:
Bae being influenced by the power of the dagger. I understand what the episode was trying to say which is that anyone can be influenced by dark magic and power, but it just felt so out of character from the Bae that we all know. The only thing that saved this at all was the memory potion which was a good use of it. Rumple used the potion to break the influence of the dagger on Bae.
Rumple trying to use the memory potion on Gideon, instead of reassuring him that he was just a kid who was being manipulated and that it does not make him a coward it makes him a normal scared kid which is okay. Rumple you can’t always and shouldn’t always take the easy way out.
Hook not telling Emma the truth although this felt in character for Hook who always tries to deflect responsibility and take the easy way out.

Maybe because RUMPLE used the potion on BAE it explains why BAE became more fanatic about RUMPLE give up magic and not being the DARK ONE…. it pushed him into running away.

Seriously if this is what the show is like without Snowing or Emma, cancel the crap right now!
