I actually quite liked this episode! It was the first time in several weeks that I wasn’t shaking my head at the character’s nonsensical logic or horrendous ret-conning by the writers. Yes we had to endure ANOTHER magical McGuffin, but at least it was used to provide character development for Zelena. I thought they were going to put the Crimson Heart into the Blue Fairy to wake her up, like jump starting a car with the magic from Zelena.
Likes:
-I liked that they addressed the tension between Regina and Zelena, it has been so long since they have talked about it that I was starting to forget what it was about. And Z made a good point about how she sacrificed Hades to save Regina, it helped me feel more sympathetic towards her.
-The Black Fairy. She’s fabulous and I’m really enjoying her. I thought her manipulation of Zelena was clever and worthy of a supposedly formidable villain.
-All the wedding planning drama. It was fun, and light, a good balance to the other drama in the episode. And yet it was still important and on topic. Good tie-ins to season 1 and addressed the underlying theme of living in the moment even when facing trials.
-The Black Fairy talking to Regina about the Dark Curse. She said something like, “So you’re the one who cast my curse? No wonder it didn’t go well.” That made me laugh.
Dislikes:
-The glowing pen. Since when?!
-Regina was too harsh with Zelena when she told her to go back to Oz. I didn’t like that, but maybe it’s more true to Regina’s character than we’d like to believe. We know she can hold a grade (Dark Curse anyone?)
Overall I thought it was a decent episode. Looking forward to the remainder of the season!

Liked:
– Zelena choosing to give up her magic. That was good and it did tie into the flashback.
– I actually liked the crimson heart. Other than the magic taser, we haven’t really had an object that sucked the magic out of you. I thought the object tied well into Zelena’s story and her love for her power and herself. It makes me wonder if Rumple will do the same at some point. It seems like quite a powerful object to only have in one episode. Then again, we have a few very powerful objects in play right now: the wand that banished black fairy, the crimson heart, all the fairy dust.
– CS make out scene. It was a little much however these are scenes the show needs. I’d like to see scenes like this with Snowing too. And Rumbelle.
– Black Fairy continues to be good. I like the silly giggle she does now mimicking Rumple as the DO.
– The scene where Zelena knocks Black Fairy back but then her magic doesn’t do anything was very good.
– I enjoyed Snowing arguing over the venue. I see both sides and both sides have a point.
– I enjoy Black Fairy’s crystal ball that allows her to see things going on in storybrooke. I also like that Blue is important and Black is worried about her. Make Blue important!
Mixed:
– The flashbacks. While I did enjoy them and I liked the spin on the tin man, at the end of the day, they were irrelevant. And once Zelena gave up her magic, it sort of made the whole episode irrelevant bc it basically just reset it. Nothing changed after this episode. And the Black Fairy has to start from scratch.
– Sisters fighting. I get they are sisters and their relationship is a mess. But I mean, Regina forcing Zelena into a wall. Black Fairy taking out Regina and Zelena not giving a crap. Regina telling Zelena to go back to Oz. Like ouch. Zelena was just trying to get rid of the threat. Was she arrogant and wrong? Yes. Did she make a mistake? Yes. Does that warrant them banishing her to Oz? Good God no.
Disliked:
– The CGI. I actually thought it wasn’t very good. I thought the lion looked bad. The caves scenes were pretty awful. When Black Fairy shakes the roof of the cave and like two rocks fall and Zelena is like ducking for dear life as the Black Fairy runs away…lol.
– Why were they trapped in the caves? They can just poof out. The show forgets this sometimes and it annoys me. They wrote themselves into a corner with that one.
– Henry’s author powers. Why can’t he just write that Emma wins the final battle? What happened to the author having influence on the characters behavior? What, can you not influence the Savior’s behavior? Another corner they wrote themselves into.
– So all the fairy dust was just chilling down in the mines? The dwarves didn’t notice any of that? How convenient.
– Fairy dust can open portals to Oz now?
– So Blue is asleep? Just bc her magic is gone? Is this something that happens just to Fairies? Bc plenty of people have gotten their magic sucked out of them and they don’t fall asleep. AKA Zelena. AKA Tink.
– What on earth is Black Fairy’s motivation? Why does she want the final battle to happen? Is it simply to kill Emma. But what does killing Emma do for her? I need to know why she is doing what she is doing so her actions make more sense.
– Emma’s outfits have been horrendous. They are preparing us for an ugly wedding dress.

But what about all of the amazing memories? Like Hook terrorising the fairies by sucking them into the sorcerers hat? 😉

I thought Black Fairy was going to cause the ground to shake when she pressed whatever it was after turning the crystals black. Would’ve been a nice setup for the joke “I thought the earth wasn’t supposed to move until the honeymoon” for CS. Unfortunately that didn’t happen on either front so slightly disappointed at that.
The flashbacks were okay, it wouldn’t have harmed the episode not to have them and that screen time could’ve been better spent for present day action but it is what it is.
I like the little domestic moments between the characters such as the Charmings looking at wedding venues, the CS pancake scene (though I do think the kissing went on a bit long). The show has been missing those kind of everyday elements which breathe life into the characters, instead focusing on plot and McGuffins galore.
The Black Fairy continues to impress. I think Belle might be the one to defeat her rather than Emma because of the thematic symbolism eg Belle going all protective mother over Gideon and the two “mothers” going head to head over their son.
Speaking of Belle, besides being criminally underused this season, it does kind of feel Belle cares a little more about Gideon being good rather than Gideon himself. All her scenes this half season seem to contain the refrain “he’s not evil”.
Also I think they’ve just signposted RumBelle’s fate at the end of the season. Belle’s line (paraphrasing because I can’t remember the exact line) “We missed out on so much with Gideon, that’s time we’ll never get back” suggests to me that they are going to de-age Gideon at this end of the arc and RumBelle will get their happily ever after raising him. At least they should get a HEA since the show couldn’t be bothered to show any of their good times on-screen so naturally their HEA will be off-screen.
All magic comes with a price!
