I don’t know what to do with this episode. It was interesting, confusing, and a let-down all at the same time for me.
Liked:
– Rumple was supposed to be a Savior. Great twist. Black Fairy ended up being the evil “born” she was trying to protect Rumple from after searching for it among 1000 babies – also a great twist.
– Robert Carlyle’s acting with Gideon. So much heartfelt emotion. He is somehow able to take all of the nonsense written for him and somehow make it work at least on an emotional level that resonates.
– Continuity with the shears and anti-magic cuff.
Mixed:
– The Dream World and Sands of Morpheus. I like the continuity and it served its purpose for the plot, but now you can retrieve lost memories from when you were a baby in it? Ok….
Disliked:
– They made a big deal out of how Fiona didn’t give Rumple a name, but why didn’t she exactly? Blue and Tiger Lily interrupted her and Malcolm choosing one, and then they just never got around to it? It was set up as an important plot point and then…this.
– The Dark Curse, the “curse to end all curses” was made by just putting two ancient spells together by a self-taught and made fairy? Really?! That’s it?!
– So Fiona was going to crush Tiger Lily’s heart to enact the Dark Curse, because she loves her most. I guess that could work since it’s clear she doesn’t truly love Rumple and what’s best for him and maybe she doesn’t love Malcolm that much? But if she built into the curse that you have to kill the thing you love most, shouldn’t she be smart enough to realize she doesn’t really love Rumple that much or she would have to crush his heart instead of Tiger Lily’s? She loves Tiger Lily more? Huh???
– We’re led to believe the Black Fairy is the ultimate, original evil, but she’s predated by Nimue? To be the ultimate end-all Big Bad, she needed to have been pulling the strings and somehow the reason for all the previous evil and villains throughout the series – didn’t Rumple even say she was as much to Emma a few eps ago? This was a chance for the writers to shows an origin of good and evil story for their universe, and they sadly didn’t.
– I still don’t understand why the Black Fairy put on all the theatrics, and didn’t want her secret told. Why are they now at a point where they “can be a family,” but weren’t when she first got to Storybrooke?
– Still no origin story for Blue. No reason for her shadiness throughout the series. We’ve gotten origin/motivation episodes for characters like Tiny, but not for the “original power?” My only hope is that they make Keegan a regular for S7 and finally get to her story.

Points lost for
…no explanation given for why Fiona was able to turn herself into a fairy. Just ”that’s impossible” and disbelief.
…it’s supposed to be a dream world, not ”lost memories world.” how do we even know that what Rumple saw was accurate if it is a dream rather than a memory?
It was interesting to see that Rumple was destined to kill his mother as the original savior. But why would fate do this to this family? Can’t really blame them for wanting to make things better for themselves and future generations.
And, as I said a few weeks ago, it means that the characters’ choices do not affect their lives much; it’s all about destiny or fate. Hence why Regina no matter what she does, is always shat upon. This show doesn’t provide much hope, I have to say. This is another reason why it lost points from me today.
One more thing….Snowing did a horrible thing to protect Emma. They put her evilness inside another child/dragon. Yet their hearts didn’t darken from it and they remained heroes. This really irks me. It seems that Snowing are destined to remain heroes no matter what they do, too.

This didn’t even register with me but…yeah….

The acting in the episode was good, but the episode was a bit of a letdown after the Black Fairy was teased over three seasons ago. I agreed that it felt cobbled together, which is a shame since the narrative could’ve been built up so much more throughout the season. The opening scene of the season should have been the prophesy about Rumple being destined to die at the hands of a dark evil with a cresent moon. That would’ve set the tone for the rest of the season. Looking back, the fact that we had Jafar and Aladdin as the opening scene seems strange now. Also, the episode had serious continuity issues. For instance, how exactly did Fiona become a fairy besides an unexplained “impossible” wave of a wand? How was it that Blue Fairy just left Rumple to be raised by a neglectful father like Malcolm? Why exactly was Tiger Lily banished to Neverland? Tiger Lily tried to prevent Fiona from becoming a dark fairy. I know: pointless questions.

Bobby hits it out of the ballpark as per usual, and Rumple’s dynamic with his family, and actually with Emma was really great. I do wish the show had made use of the Rumple/Emma tandem more, I find their bickering quite entertaining, and it brings out elements of Emma’s character that I forgot were even there, and that I really love.
Regina/Zelena were a highlight for me this episode. I usually don’t really like Zelena’s subplots, but the Wicked sisters dynamic was both funny and touching.
But then the overall writing and narrative were a bit of a mess. Why did Fiona magically turn into a fairy? What is this nonsense with using Tiger Lily’s heart, or is the stipulation that it has to be the heart of the thing you love most a byproduct of the combined spell and not the original two spells? If Saviors are born in relation to some kind of great evil that they are meant to defeat in an act of self-sacrifice, then what do we make of the idea that Rumple actually made Emma into the savior by writing her into the curse, or is that a different type of saviorhood? Also, why is there a moratorium on creating new spells?
I’m not sure how I feel about OUAT’s creepily Freudian Goldilocks dilemma in its assessment of motherhood. Joining the motherhood-as-redemption trope we now have the “mothers who loved too much” trope. Sigh. There’s just no winning with these people.
Also, the fairy tulip room with the flower linoleum. I don’t know if I felt horrified or delighted by it. I think both.

It was a pretty room but i figured the forbidden vault of the fairies would at leaest look a bit more…forbidden. I wanna have a sleepover in there.

That was sort of answered in “Awake.” Apparently, Tiger Lily felt so guilty about what went down with the Black Fairy and “banished” herself to Neverland. So rather than helping the child entrusted to her that she made things worse for, she just peaced out. Apparently Blue didn’t think she needed to be replaced because reasons.

Rump was probably one of the lucky few to get a fairy godmother because he was the savior. Since he was no longer the savior and just the average garden variety child, Blue probably didn’t think it was necessary to have a magical overseer for him. Of course, that is assuming she was never aware he would become the dark one.
But since the fairies have a book of prophecies…shes must have known…. Idk with this show anymore.

Haha yes! I can definitely picture Tiger Lily, Nova, and the other fairies sitting in their sleeping bags talking about the different boys Blue forbade them from being with. LOL.
May 6, 2017 at 8:59 am #337845PriceofMagicParticipantOne of the strongest episodes in season 6. Series wise, the majority of Rumple episodes tend to be good. I just wish they’d make use of Rumple and Belle more.
I actually felt sorry for Black Fairy. In many ways Tiger Lily was to blame for everything. If she’d never shown Fiona the book of prophesy or brought her fairy books then everybody would’ve gotten on with their lives quite happily. What sort of person tells a new mother that their baby is going to grow up and die because they’re the saviour and just expect the mother to be okay with that? Fiona’s actions, whilst morally wrong, were understandable. I even felt sorry for Malcolm. He was grieving for Fiona and his upset was mistakenly directed towards Rumple and the fairies just stood by and said nothing. His “How can I raise him alone?” was basically met with a “get on with it”.
I like the domestic moments between WickedSisters, trying to assemble the cot plus failing (though why couldn’t Zelena just bring Robin’s crib from her house?) and the driving lesson. OUAT needs those domestic moments between the characters to make them feel like actual people rather than just pieces to move through the plot. I’ve noticed Regina has gone back to her season 1 hairstyle. Also why did Regina buy such an awful looking car for Zelena? It looks like a green Ghostbusters car which worked for the Ghostbusters but not as an actual car to be driven generally.
I dislike Tiger Lily and Blue, they caused all the problems this episode with their interference. They could’ve just watched from afar and only made their presence known when necessary, but by doing what they did, they made Rumple’s life a misery.
Emma seemed more like season 1 Emma this episode and even had her red coat. Though that blue top she wore in the house was awful. Why is it Emma acts like Emma outside of scenes with Hook, yet when she’s in a scene with him, her fashion sense goes all wonky?
I like Hook asking Henry to be his best man but where the hell had Henry been since it was dark when he arrived home and he was about to run upstairs? Hook got a bit defensive when it seemed like Emma was mocking his superstition about not seeing the bride before the wedding. I don’t blame him for being defensive but the delivery just seemed like he was being too defensive. It just seems a bit odd, it’s almost as if CS’s interaction don’t always hit the note that they are supposed to. I would’ve had Hook deliver the line differently.
Snow continues to grate with how insensitive she is to the ordeal of others. Someone’s just “killed/banished” their mother to save Emma? “Oh good, we can have the wedding tomorrow”. Snow seems to get more and more self-centred with every passing season and considering she was such an integral part of season 1 with her selflessness, it’s a shame.
All magic comes with a price!
