The screener for the musical hit the ABC press site and, as usual, Matt and I got to watch it. I have some thoughts even though I know the plot of the episode has been spoiled by now. Matt might have some of his own he’d like to share.
–General: Well. Hands down this was one of the best episodes of the season. It’s super cheesy and campy but oddly enough that usually works well for OUAT (think the episode “Shattered Sight”). The songs are definitely catchy and the cast obviously had the time of their lives.
Rating: Initial viewing is a 9/10
Some highlights/passing thoughts/ controversial opinions
–The two wedding dresses Emma is trying to choose from in the beginning would have been better than the thing she ends up in. Sorry, still 100% hate that dress.
–Snowing’s opening number is delightful! It’s not cringe-worthy at all. It’s actually insanely fun to watch and Josh Dallas’s entrance in the song had me in stitches.
–“And my do I sound…GOOD!”
–The lip-syncing is….iffy in some spots.
–I cannot whatever hard enough over Hook/Rumple reigniting their feud. Both of them are being ridiculous because Rumple claims he has to do what is best for his family and Hook gets upset because it hurts his family (namely, Emma) and I’m like “shut up, the pair of you. You’re both family!”
–Bex’s voice is outstanding. I was worried because the B-roll had her sounding rough but her song is really sung well.
–“Every time something big came along, I ran from it.” “You changed.” “Because you came into my life.”
–I’ve been incredibly hard on Emma Swan these past few years because she’s largely turned into someone I don’t like. But—guys, I have to admit this–her solo against the Black Fairy had me in tears. It was that good, that powerful and that emotional.
–The whole “song in Emma’s heart” plot line is rather silly but it’s also in line with the whole campy feel.
–The most disappointing song was probably The Charmings vs Evil Queen because it’s just a rehash of their songs from before. It would have been nice to get a new song there.
–I’m going to just ignore the memory wipe because ha.ha.ha.
–The wedding is done well though I was shocked at how short the ceremony actually is. And who on earth are these random SB people?!
–I wasn’t actually a fan of the closing number “A Happy Beginning” because that one is a bit toooo cheesetastic though the visuals of it are outstanding (see controversial point #2 for more on that).
Okay, controversial opinion time!
1) This episode needed to not have the wedding attached to it. Forget all the nonsensical shipping crap. What I mean is that the wedding feels like a huge misstep because Emma’s journey should end with her singing that song to the Black Fairy, freeing her family and then ready to face down the Black Fairy for good. It’s such a good moment for Emma that the wedding begins to feel like it’s the only way Emma can be whole. She realizes that she was never alone, that she’s had the song of the people who love her inside her heart this whole time (making it unbreakable) and then…goes and gets married in a 1950s dress as if her real wholeness comes from getting hitched? It just doesn’t quite sit right. And again, none of this has to do with shipping. She and Hook should have gotten married earlier this year and not had the Hook/Charming/Robert plot so dragged out.
2) This should be the final season. It should be the end. The final number is a bit too chessetastic song wise but no one can watch it and tell me it’s not the perfect ending to the show. Trying to continue it on next year, probably sans some of the cast, is going to feel hollow and weird.

I just have a hard time with it being funny because this show is not funny. It is funny because we see interviews of these actors and see them as real people and they aren’t supposed to be that here. They are supposed to be their characters. I don’t really care if the cast has a good time. Maybe that is unkind, but i don’t, especially while i am watching the epsiode. This is a tv show and i want what happens to feel consistent and earned and all the things that good writers can do that this show can not.
I think this episode could be fun as like this is silly and stupid and why are these people singing and having fun, but i am in too deep and have too many problems with the writing to really feel that way about what is going on the show right now.
May 4, 2017 at 4:00 pm #337764MatthewPaulModeratorGuess I’ll throw in my two cents:
– Top 3 favorite songs are “Powerful Magic”, “Revenge is Gonna Be Mine”, and “Wicked Always Wins”.
– Standout singing performances go to Colin, Bex and Josh.
– Like RG said, “Powerful Magic”, the duet between Snow and Charming, is actually not a bad number at all. It’s adorable.
– Still really enjoyed “Revenge is Gonna Be Mine”, as you all knew.
– I also still like “The Queen Sings”/”Love Doesn’t Stand a Chance”, though they probably rank lower for me than most of the others.
– “Wicked Always Wins” is definitely going to be the surprise standout. Bex does an incredible job here, and that b-roll footage of her in the recording booth nowhere near does her justice. She doesn’t sound auto-tuned either. Actually don’t think I noticed any auto-tuning in any of the songs.
– I have mixed feelings about “Charmings Vs. Evil Queen”, since it is a mashup of “Powerful Magic” and “Love Doesn’t Stand a Chance”. I still like it, but definitely my least favorite.
– “Emma’s Theme” is not only a nice song, but the scene itself is a very powerful moment for the character. Also props to adapting Mark Isham’s OUAT main theme.
– I differ with RG, regarding our opinions on “A Happy Beginning”, the closer number. It’s cheesy, but I still think it’s a nice happy go lucky song. It reminds me of the type of song you’d hear at a Disney theme park parade or stage show, and I mean that in a good way. I really felt that Disney nostalgic feeling here. I also like how it’s an ensemble piece.
– Overall, I think the majority of fans will really enjoy this. It exceeded my expectations.May 4, 2017 at 5:36 pm #337771RumplesGirlKeymasterWas it better than “Once More, With Feeling”?
No. Matt and I agree on this, I believe. Buffy’s musical will continue to remain in a class of its own.
–Bex’s voice is outstanding. I was worried because the B-roll had her sounding rough but her song is really sung well.
