hmm so finally was able to watch after a busy weekend and Monday off work.
And I agree 7 out of 10 is my vote. It was cute and bit nostalgic. If I was a new comer I would watch it.
I guess I will follow the platform
likes: Alice, new story, Tiana one liner about frog legs, SWANKEYCHAIN!!
mixed: acting and another memory curse
dislike: Hook’s and Rumple’s curse persona. They need to add a bit more depth to them otherwise they just seem like they are there for Nostalgic effect.
other thoughts:
I for once would like a fairytale characters who took on coming to our world of their own free will. They know why they are there and they want to be there. For them this is not a curse but a blessing. Some I don’t know twilight zone twists.
Also I think @hjbau made a good point that its hard to feel any true worries because we know the curse will be broken so where is the real conflict. If you asked me I think there should have been real traumatic loss in Storybrooke. Internal heartache and tragedy is something that doesn’t simply breaks with a kiss of true love. It takes time and more conflict to deal with internal stuff than anything external.

Also, as always, I love Lana Parilla. I will most likely never have a bad word to say about her specifically.
However, this was a rough first episode. It felt as choppy and rushed as the Once Upon a Time in Wonderland pilot.
It’s not my style to blast actors/actresses for their looks, but Lady Tremaine looked like she’d had one too many plastic surgeries to deliver more than one facial expression.
But the biggest problems for this episode definitely started in the writers’ room. Lucy did nothing but give exposition. She barely functioned as a character. Ronnie’s speech at the end was nice, but its emotional effect felt somewhat forced, like (insert heartfelt speech here).
For a show that started off being about hope, it’s ironic that this show probably has no hope.
Overall, I give it a 6 out of 10.
Before the creators/writers start over-hyping this show to make it seem like something it isn’t, they should come up with a solid plan of where they want to go, not just see how long they can ride this cash cow.

I never watched Burn Notice, haven’t seen Gabrielle Anwar in anything for years. So to me, she’s the fresh faced young lady that Al Pacino danced a tango with in that wonderful scene in Scent of a Woman. And she’s also Queen Anne from the remake of Three Musketeers which came out a year or so later, (which wasn’t a masterpiece, but at that point in time I was whole heartedly head over heels in love with Chris O’Donnell, so I saw that movie a stupid amount of times). And when I started seeing pics of her for the first time in years when she started doing OUAT…let’s just say that it wasn’t the face I remembered, and it kinda bummed me out.

Liked:
– Henry. The actor I thought did a good job
– Rumple as a crooked cop
– Roni and her bar
– The idea that bad things will happen bc Henry is meddling around in someone else’s story
-Tiana. I will probably like her.
Disliked:
– Lucy. I think the actress is bad.
– Lady Tremaine…idk I’m not into her really.
– Hyperion Heights…..just didn’t have the same quaint town feel that SB had. It just looks like Seattle.
– Lady Tremaine just killing the prince right near all the people at the ball. How did they not see it????
– They need a legit villain in here fast. Lady Tremaine is just not enough. She is a worse version of Regina from season 1.
– Idk how I feel about Alice. I don’t get her motivations so far.
– Cinderella was awful. I thought the actress was quite awful for most of it.
– The names of the characters…..Roni, Jacinda, Weaver? It’s like they aren’t even trying anymore
– They have to develop these characters. Roni, Weaver, Rogers…..They are treating them as new characters so let’s see some new stories. I need new backgrounds and motivations and personalities to get my mind to stop looking at Roni as a cursed Regina.
October 10, 2017 at 6:33 pm #343123hjbauParticipantI agree about the names. They are terrible. They are just all mouthfuls. Even Cinderella, i wish she had a nickname like Ella so she seemed more like a real person.

Roni is most likely short for Veronica, which means to bring victory, which is hopefully foreshadowing Regina getting the best of whomever cast the curse. Jacinda is actually a variant of Hyacintha, a reference to the Hyacinth flower which Henry stated was Cinderella’s flower, so very fitting for the HH character. Weaver works for Rumple because, although I know he technically spins straw, some people refer to it as weaving straw into gold.
October 11, 2017 at 5:48 pm #343136nonnieParticipantWHO did Lady Tremaine kill in order to enact the curse?
.
WEAVER is probably based on IRISH/ Celtic folk lore ( NOT sure if I heard it here or on another podcast) … There is a story of a weaver / fate/ witch would cut fabric to outline how a person’s life would go …. It was bad luck to have your fate / life determined by the weaver. I have been trying to track this folklore down on line to find out more about it , BUT there is so much on google it is going to take awhile.

..
I am hearing on many of the podcasts ( I listen to them all) and in some of the forums that they are unhappy with MULTIPLE STORY VERSIONS being used in Once for Henry. I think that is going against the history of the world…. Stories were verbally passed on from one generation to another, from one village to another. Think of the spreading of Christianity ( any religion) from one area of the world to another. The spread of literature / religion / culture moved even faster from one country to another after the invention of the printing press.
Archeologist and historians have been studying this phenomenon of how ideas spread for years if it can happen for religion, cultural beliefs, why can it not happen for stories, folk lore.

I think the real question is was it Lady Temaine who cast the curse. My guess is no.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 11, 2017 at 6:42 pm #343139TheWatcherParticipantI’m guessing it wasn’t her who cast the curse. It’ll be a plot twist. Someone we didn’t expect.

Now, that just isn’t true. I think it makes the world much less interesting that there are just multiple versions of any kind of all the stories. That makes it feel like the people in these stories are somehow being controlled by the story and that they have no choice in the matter. This show already has a problem with choice and now it is much worse.
