He also said he buried the knife when Emma showed up because things were changing. So I am assuming he meant he saw the possibility of magic and didn’t know if it would affect the knife and its use. He said he didn’t want to risk Regina finding it.

This kind of brings us back to the question of what it means for the curse to be broken. It doesn’t seem likely that they will all go back to FTL because then it would all be for naught as far as Rumple is concerned. Are we to believe that Mr Gold has been looking for Bae all along? Or does breaking the curse simply mean they are able to leave Storybrooke so THEN Mr Gold will be able to leave and look for Bae?
I’m not convinced that Bae ever came to our world, but it seems that Mr Gold believes he did, so yes, it would make sense that he needs the curse broken so he can leave Storybrooke and search for his son.

I disagree. I think this episode made it clear that Emma does have magic. That is what August said. He needs to get Emma to believe so that he will help him.
I think that the “magic” he personally needs from her, is simply for her to believe, which will break the curse and stop whatever is killing him.

He didn’t say he needed her to believe so she could help him herself, he said he was going to get her to believe, which is a key step in her breaking the curse and potentially bringing them back to FTL, which has magic. Nothing actually says Emma herself has any magic at all.
April 24, 2012 at 3:04 pm #143683SlurpeezParticipantActually, episode 17 strongly hinted that Emma has magic when she made a hat and Jefferson appears to have disappeared into it.

April 24, 2012 at 6:48 pm #143729hjbauParticipantThere have been many implications that Emma has magic,in my opinion. It may not be the fire throwing, force throwing, disapparation sort of magic, but it is something that is causing things to happen around her.
April 24, 2012 at 8:49 pm #143767greenjumperParticipantI don’t know about Emma, but I think the “real world” definitely has magic. Remember how Regina killed the sheriff? She wasn’t anywhere near him and then she took a heart out of a box, and squeezed it until Graham (??? that was the sheriff’s name, right?) passed out and died.
Perhaps when Bae came to the “real world” there wasn’t any magic. However, when Rumple created the curse, in order to keep everyone here and keep everyone from remembering their true selves some magic had to be transferred over in order for it to work. So, now our world has magic even if it didn’t before.
(That’s the only way I can see Bae getting transferred to “our world” and “our world” having magic after he was already here)

That’s actually an interesting point. Mr. Gold said that this world didn’t have magic, but it obviously does. He was able to create magic in this world by bringing the curse into this world.
April 24, 2012 at 9:30 pm #143775oncewaslostParticipantLast night is when I decided that the statement that this world has not magic isn’t entirely true. Or at least to be taken at face value.
In “Mad Hatter” Jefferson wants Emma to make him a hat because he says she has magic. He also says that “some worlds have magic, others don’t. Some NEED magic and that’s where YOU come in”
So he knows that Emma has magic. Magic can come to other worlds even though it isn’t inherently there. She does afterall make a hat that seems to have been magical does she not?
Now here’s the thing. At the time Bae took the bean express to our world, he understood our world had no magic. He didn’t know of the long con his Papa Rumple would contrive. Rumple helped bring magic to Storybrook. Perhaps he wasn’t directly responsible for the magic tree and baby Emma going through it, but he certainly knew she would end up here in the real world. The whole conversation with Charming and Snow while he’s in his prison (Pilot) indicates that much. Mr. Gold was the one responsible for bringing Emma’s baby, Henry for Regina to adopt (unbeknownst to her). Getting to my point here…
Mr. Gold only buried the knife after Emma came to town. Why? He knew that she had magic. She can make it work like she made the hat work. Bae wouldn’t have know that but August should have, shouldn’t he? That Emma has magic but that magic doesn’t exist in the world overall? So why try to control the dark one? Another con?
April 24, 2012 at 10:04 pm #143789nightreaderParticipantThere’s also a chance that Bae went to a completely different world. All we know is he went to ‘a world without magic’. It could technically be a completely different world, especially with how it seems our world has some magic in it, whether it came with the curse or not there could still be other worlds out there without magic where Bae could have landed. Just a thought (although I think it’s way more likely to be our world).
April 24, 2012 at 10:14 pm #143792hjbauParticipantI think Gold waiting to bury the knife until Emma comes to town also makes me question whether or not he had his memories before Emma came. Why would Gold want until Emma came to town when it is Regina he is worried about finding the knife? Is he really worried that Emma will use the knife against him? Or is it just he didn’t know to hide the knife before that?
