A note about ‘shipping wars.
OUAT was awesome when it first started. We all loved the show and everyone generally got along well. But I’ve noticed this year, things are different. ’Shippers are being more hostile towards other ‘shippers, more bashing and bullying going on.
Once more, I expect Oncers to be more respectful of other ‘shippers and fans. If someone does not ‘ship what you do, seriously, that is okay.
It is okay to rejoice when something ‘shippy happens on the show, but it is NOT okay to take to twitter and be disrespectful of your fellow Oncers.
I hate ‘shipping wars in general, because I’ve had a bad experience in the past and it sickens me even now. What I don’t want to see is these factions of Oncers splitting up, bickering with each other over ‘ships on this show. Seriously, we are better than that. At least I hope we are.
I don’t want to lecture anyone but please, please, remember Oncer ‘shippers, we ARE ALL Oncers. And we should all be respectful and kind to each other.
As far as saying which ‘ship is endgame, unless you are Adam or Eddie (the writers of the show), you cannot say your ‘ship is endgame because you are not the writers of the show.
So, let’s remember to be sensitive and considerate towards other ‘ships and fans.
I just want everyone to get along and stop with this fighting and bullying each other. I want there to be peace in the OUAT fandom.
Now, you may go back to your friendly OUAT ‘shipping. 😀

Wait… what do you mean that ship has sailed? T_T
(But for real, well said. I really feel like overall OUAT is a super relaxed and respectful fandom, I hope to see more of that. Yay!)

And I hope it stays that way, but I’ve seen nasty stuff elsewhere and I thought it was worth reminding OUAT fans here. 😀
May 7, 2013 at 7:08 pm #192001PriceofMagicParticipantShipping Wars are a sign of passion, that’s not to say they shouldn’t and can’t be respectful, but when two popular ships are seen as going head to head, people are going to come out to support their ship against the other.
SwanFire and CaptainSwan is probably the biggest shipping war in the Once fandom. They both involve the same character and both have the potential and plausibility to actually happen on the show (unlike SwanQueen for example). Of course it’s going to divide opinion because the other threatens the preferred ship.
I actually started out as anti-CaptainSwan. I couldn’t see the appeal, I wasn’t exactly keen on SwanFire either but between the two I would’ve preferred SwanFire over CaptainSwan. However, I’ve now changed my opinion on CaptainSwan, I can see it has merit and potential. In The Evil Queen, I saw a different side of Hook and I liked it, I could see a relationship between Hook and Emma actually kind of working.
CaptainSwan will always have its haters as well as Swanfire will, however most people just prefer one ship over the other and haven’t yet seen the moment where the other’s potential come to light.
All magic comes with a price!

Some of us see both but I agree, head-to-head shipping can get nasty. While I have a preference in that particular shipping war, I can see why others are passionate for the other side of it.
We are all Oncers and should respect each other.
Cheering when something happens for your favorite character / ship / etc is one thing. Celebrating that other ships are now sunk or seemingly sunk or probably won’t happen isn’t necessary.
IE: “Yay SWANFIRE feels!” is fine. Enjoy your moment by all means, I’m happy that you got something to be happy to go off of to keep you happy-ish for awhile (*passes out cookies for SwanFire feels after this ep*).
On the other hand: “Finally CaptainSwan is dead, haha” is mean and insulting to those who ship it. One is celebrating something you love and the other is mocking the pain of fellow Oncers and celebrating the fact that somebody else didn’t get what they wanted while you did. There is a difference.
This isn’t a competition to see who gets what they want. The only ones who have invested interest in any kind of competition are Neal & Hook. We do not “win” anything by picking the “right” ship other than avoiding heartache later on. Somebody somewhere will be happy about it, and heaven forbid the tides turn and the people saying “Deal with it” right now should have to not only dish it out but take it too.
It’s good that we are all passionate about the show and we’re never going to all love or hate the same things (although I think we can mostly agree on hating Tamara right now…) but we should still be respectful of each other. I can’t count the number of times after last week’s episode I saw stuff directed at CS shippers saying “SF is canon. Deal with it” (Sure SF is canon. Doesn’t mean there isn’t merit in the parallels they drew back in Tallahassee, nor does it negate any future potential now the road.)
There is no need to laugh at fellow shippers pain. The other night it was directed at CaptainSwan and I get that, but I would hope nobody was cheering that Gremma was over when Graham died, or mocking WoodenSwan people when August was de-aged. It crushed people of those fandoms and removed 2 of the potential Emma pairings but because it wasn’t one of the main 2 that are particularly viable at the moment, that kind of behavior either wasn’t happening or I just never saw it. I would like to think that had Neal died for real (I so don’t see that happening) that there wouldn’t have been CaptainSwan people shouting “finally he’s out of the way! so glad he died!”…just…no. Firstly that’s not the way to get the ship you want, and secondly somebody (a lot in that particular example) loves the character and the pairing and would be devastated. Why rub that in, regardless of the ship?
Not all shippers are mean or nasty about stuff and some of us (myself included) do see the potential in both SwanFire & CaptainSwan, even if we do have a preference but some of the stuff I’ve seen this week is sickening. The OUAT fandom is a family and it usually feels like a pretty darn good one. Right now it feels like we’re all in Kindergarten.
To each their own, enjoy the moments that give you something to root for whomever you chose (and whatever pairing you chose), just don’t dance around on everybody else’s toes. Celebrate the stuff you love. Don’t celebrate others not getting what they want.
“We must agree to disagree without being disagreeable.” – One of the things I love about this fandom, and these forums especially, is the discussions that we have about every angle of the show. We can try til we’re blue in the face to convince people to like what we like but at the end of the day, we’re a bunch of passionate fans analyzing a show we love, and all rooting for different outcomes. That’s what a fandom is and it’s usually a fun thing to be a part of. Let’s keep it that way.

May 14, 2013 at 1:42 am #194066kiwiParticipantI agree with most of this – shipping wars just lead to bad vibes. I don’t ship any parings, but I love the content generated around them by others – people are sooo talented. All the various ships seem plausible to some degree. For me, I get angry when people hate on what people want to ship. It doesn’t hurt anybody to ship a pairing – why be so cruel? That’s just mean, right? My latest gripe as regards ship hating is Swan Queen. Really? It’s not the 1950’s any more kiddies. Two women in a loving relationship is a real thing these days. Why do people feel the need to mindlessly hate on it? I don’t ship them as a pair, but it feels wrong to hate on those who ship it. I just wish everyone could ship what they want without feeling the need to have a jab – it all just seems needlessly petty. That’s why I’m steering clear of shipping pretty much (the only relationship I liked was Regina/Daniel but that only lasted one episode 😥 ) Anywho, we should all just try to get along and be pleasant to each other. It’s not good to be fighting. So I totally agree with the original post – let’s all get along!!
