Hmmm, where to start. First of all I know several people have suggested that Greg Mendell is actually part of the land of Oz, and that he is calling Dorethy, so I think they might be on to something, but I don’t think it’s the Wizard of Oz… it’s Wicked, which is of course largely the same story, but a bit darker
Now let’s see if I can provide you with some evidence
1 Greg Mendel: Yes, famous bean scientist… But also Gregory Maguire is the writer of the Wicked books. Yes there are several. More of that later. Idina Menzel (Mendel, Menzel) won a Tony for her portrayal of Elphaba.
2 In the Wizard of Oz, Elphaba has no name. So that would be … HER
3 In the hospital, behind Belle as she gets her book from Ruby and later as Greg tells her he believes her, there is a poster of a Lion, with the word PROUD under it. First I thought it was connected to Belle. But one of the Wicked books is titles “A Lion among Men”
(There is also a poster of Germ Theory that looked quite outta place, but I can’t place that yet. So ideas are welcome)
4 Henry said: “Who knows what other creatures from other Faity tale lands were taken away and walking around in Storybrook.” But let’s change that theory a bit. What if another world was pulled with FTL… OZ. Or a similar thing happened there. The first picture on Greg Mendel’s phone is from StoryBook Forrest, Pennsylvania. He made calls to Pennsylvnia, and his license plates are from Pensylvania. Rumpel brought magic to Storybrook (which might be why no one can leave without losing their memory, he might have reinstated the curse doing so) But OZ would be without magic in our world. FInding a place with magic, I think they would like some too.
5For the musical Wicked, Elphaba was written to be less cynical, more likable, and far more sympathetic than the novel counterpart. Her only abnormality is her green skin. In the book, Elphaba virtually goes insane, and genuinely becomes “wicked”, though understandably so. In the musical, Elphaba is framed by the Wizard and Madame Morrible for crimes she “committed” on the Wizard’s orders, and because she refused to turn her powerful magic to the wizard’s sickening cause. Therefore, the public turns against her. Later she truly turns wicked because she is depressed and frustrated that she could not save Fiyero, decides that “no good deed goes unpunished” and vows never to do another good deed.
Is it just me or does this sound like “No good comes from magic”
6The picture of the fish restaurant on Greg’s phone? Elphaba has a brother named Shell.
7Last but not least, there are rumors Disney wants to do an animated version of Wicked. In which case they will own those rights.Someone pointed out that the rights to Wizard of Oz were with ..WB? I think. But if they go for Wicked they would be totally in the clear.I think there are a few more connections, but I thought I’d share what I got so far so maybe you can think with me.

They set a precedent by giving Frankenstein the name of the director of the movie, so it’s entirely possible that there’s a link between names of writers and actresses too.
2 In the Wizard of Oz, Elphaba has no name. So that would be … HER
Wikipedia says that there was a “she” mentioned in Wicked…
Further evidence of the possible resurrection of Elphaba were brought to light towards the end of the 2008 novel A Lion Among Men (the third book in the series), when the character of Yackle (Yackle was always present in Elphaba’s life in various forms, whether Elphaba was aware of it or not) is about to die. Before she does, she seems to have a realization of some sort and says “of course- she’s coming back. Don’t you understand, she’s coming back!” However, the identity of the ‘she’ to whom Yackle was referring remains ambiguous, as she dies before she can make herself understood. Many fans of the series think that she was talking about Elphaba, while others believe she may have been talking about the long-lost Ozma.
Regarding Ozma: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Ozma

The way they set up the shot, with Greg standing between the posters, seemed very deliberate. It’s not really random for there to be a Germ Theory poster in a hospital, a place where they have strict hygiene practices to prevent the spread of germs. There was a pic of whathisname who pioneered germ theory research on that poster, so I took that as a nod to how Greg Mendel was also a pioneer in his field of research, which is a nod towards Greg’s name being somehow significant to his role in the show. The lion poster seemed really random for a hospital, so I believe it must have been deliberate. It immediately made me think of the Cowardly Lion, who became brave and proud after meeting the Wizard.

We haven’t had confirmation that the curse affected other worlds yet. Whale got pulled from his world, and Jefferson likely got pulled out of Wonderland, but I don’t think we’ve seen any indication that those whole worlds were touched by the curse. In the case of Oz, if they stick to the traditional theme of Dorothy and the Wizard both having been from our world, and coming back here, then they wouldn’t need the curse to explain how they, or anyone else, could have ended up in our world in the present day, as Greg and Her.
The first picture on Greg Mendel’s phone is from StoryBook Forrest, Pennsylvania.
Do you mean the pic of him with the statue? That’s a statue that’s in Steveston, the town where they film the show.
He made calls to Pennsylvnia, and his license plates are from Pensylvania. This is one of the reasons why it fits for him to be the Wizard IMO. He was a real world guy who was a master of illusion and lived for a time in a magical land. It makes sense to me that such a person would seek out a place like SB and be excited to have found it.

Sounds to me like Regina’s current state of mind.
March 1, 2013 at 5:35 pm #176111spinninggoldParticipantYES YES YES! I GOT IT!
Germ Theory Poster! Well germs are spread by coughing and … sneezing!SNEEZY! He lost his memory and is bewondered by the whole of Storybrooke. He has seen some weird stuff, and even though the dwarves are looking after him, they can’t possibly watch him 24/7. So there is a good chance he might have told someone about the strange things happening to him, a friend, a colleague outside Storybrooke: Greg Mendell. After all Storybrooke is not completely severed from the world, calls are made outside Storybrooke (like when Sidney dug up dirt on Emma)
Another clue: Sneezy’s Storybrooke shop is called Dark Star Pharmacy. Hello Star Wars!March 2, 2013 at 11:10 am #176188spinninggoldParticipantAnd now more Wicked theory, the Sneezy/Germ theory came to me late last night (as I sneezed), and when I looked up the info on Sneezy and found out he run Dark Star pharmacy the puzzle came together.
BTW Phee I completely agree, thank god for Wikipedia, I never saw Wicked either. You are right on the fisherman… But that would mean Greg was in Storybrooke before, wouldn’t it? Seeing Stevenson IS Storybrooke. So why did no one else notice? Still trying to piece everything together
Ok so in Wicked, Elphaba is after the Ruby Slippers, just like Rumpelstiltskin was at one point. She enchanted them so her sister Nessarosa (wicked which of the East) could walk, but after Dorethy dropped a house on her, she died and Glinda gave them to Dorethy. Elphaba wants them back as a memory to her sister.
Dorethy goes back to earth. In the musical Elphaba and Fiyero escape OZ as she is pronounced Wicked… maybe they went to earth to go after the slippers.
The Wizard who rules OZ and turns out to be evil, also turns out to be Elphaba’s real father (Luke, I am your father!… yes Star Wars ringtone for HER)
Now Fiyero is said to be a handsome darkhaired prince, and Greg is… not…except darkhaired. Though he will of course have aged, and Fiyero is turned into a Scarecrow by Elphaba to save his life… and he DOES look like a scarecrow… (sorry poor mr Actor who plays him. You play your role very well though)March 2, 2013 at 10:14 pm #176260jessieparadoxes of peopleParticipantI don’t think Greg is from Oz.In the official podcast for “In the Name of the Brother”the creators said the reason why they put the Star Wars theme on his phone was to show that he is from this world. But I do think something about the wizard of Oz is going to come up.

March 3, 2013 at 12:19 am #176280craxyfoxParticipantThis is really interesting 🙂
I was really really, reaally hoping for no wizard of oz connections in the show (the movie scared me when I was little and it still does 😆 ), but your theory is great and I may just be on board 🙂March 3, 2013 at 9:34 am #176344spinninggoldParticipantCraxyfox, you poor thing, I know how you feel, I think we all have a movie like that. When I was little there was an animated series of Dorethy though, and my dad loved the dry remarks of the series, so he made me watch. The remarks went right over my head (I was 4 yrs old) but I liked the series.
Even I am not a hundred percent sure about my theory, but it fits together quite well. And what Jessie said, yes they are from our world, that could just mean they have lived here for a long time… or it is Dorethy after all who is behind all this, because she is from our world.
I am however 99,9 % sure Sneezy is somehow involved with Greg’s arrival, whether it is directly or indirectly I don’t know, but Sneezy blurted something to someone outside Storybrooke and that is why Greg’s there.
March 3, 2013 at 10:10 am #176347craxyfoxParticipantoh yes, wizard of oz along with willy wonka -terrified- 😆
However I did find Wicked an interesting read on wikipedia and the new Oz movie looks pretty cool so hopefully I’ll be less scared, but the flying monkeys will forever give me heebie jeebies! But the lion poster was a good catch! That was not there by coincidence so I think you are onto something 🙂 And I agree about poor Sneezy, we almost forgot about him, it’s unlikely that he just stays in his pharmacy all day so hopefully we’ll see what he’s been getting up to
March 3, 2013 at 2:16 pm #176362jessieparadoxes of peopleParticipantI do think you’re right about someone or something from Oz showing up.Really,I could never come up with something so logical–and with hints in the show too!!! Awesome!!!!!! I’ve also heard that maybe Rumple’s father was the cowardly Lion.If that’s true….. that might have been how he found out bout the slippers?
