So, who could the D’DEL be? Xanax? Neo of Sporin? Ivan Bupfrofin? Ja-FAAAAAR?
January 31, 2016 at 9:37 pm #315844MatthewPaulModeratorWhat a strong way to end the Season! I too really want a Season 3, or at the very least the show to have a future via a stage musical like some have hinted about. If the series were to end here, though, it’s a much more satisfying conclusion than last year’s huge unresolved cliffhanger. Overall, I’d say Season 2 was even better than Season 1, and I say that as someone who still loved Season 1.
Highlights from the finale
– The Jester’s recap song.
– “A Good Day to Die”
– Seeing Chef and Gwynne again!
– “Do the D’Dew”, which lyricist Glenn Slater said was a callback to the Sherman Brothers’ music such as “Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins. Though I was thinking of it as an evil version of “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.”
– Everybody finally reunited!
– The show poking fun at last Season’s huge cliffhanger, and the backlash they got from viewers for it.
– “Would you like me to write you a theme song, my king?” “Shut up, Menken!”
– Richard having a duet with his younger self. How touching!
– Sid returning with an army assorted with people from their past exploits, except for the notable guest stars. XD.
– Izzy and Maddy facing off against each other in combat.
– Richard defeating Wormwood and saving the day, while avenging Tad Cooper.
– Galavant proposing to Izzy and revealing that his first name is Gary. LOL.
– Richard and Roberta reuniting, getting their own happy ending.
– The entire finale song sequence with the Galabella wedding, Weird Al returning as the Monk, Maddy seeing the DEL (lol), the show poking fun at if they can get another surprise renewal, and the reveal that Tad Cooper really is a dragon!January 31, 2016 at 9:41 pm #315845RumplesGirlKeymaster“Would you like me to write you a theme song, my king?” “Shut up, Menken!”
I totally forgot to write that one down. That was brilliant, as is the rest of this show.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"January 31, 2016 at 10:13 pm #315846RumplesGirlKeymasterOkay, I can collect my thoughts now. Obviously I thought S2 was an absolute success. This show does witty, campy, irreverent (at times), heartfelt drama so well. And it does it all in the guise of being a comedy extravaganza. But that’s what makes it so beautiful…sold as a comedy but the drama and narrative weight is there like it is with more serious hour long dramas. I was on the edge of my seat hoping Richard would go and get Roberta and save her from Mount Spinster (with her cat and chocolate). Even though we all probably knew that Galavant and Isabella would work out, watching them get there was tremendous fun. The show knows just when to poke fun of themselves and their genre–like the magical amulet McGuffin that no one has ever seen before, Neo of Sporin, spoofing various famous musicals and other fantasy movies/literature. The meta nature of the show is a huge selling point (and more than once I have felt that they were making fun of OUAT–“a pirate died!” even though they clearly wrote/shot 201 *before* 5×11 aired)
I think the best points of the season for me were Galavant and Richard’s interactions. From Richard’s introduction in S1 singing about wanting “to shoot him {Galavant} with a cross bow” to proudly declaring that Gal was his best pal, the show managed to develop a character that could have been a huge cliche (the evil king) organically and with only 20 episodes over the course of two seasons (which is shorter than your average broadcast drama!)
I loved watching Izzy take her people to war and fight for her happy ending which, yes, included true love but also included her fighting for herself and her freedom.
Gareth and Madelena were a surprise feel-fest I didn’t see coming.
The fact that it wasn’t Galavant who was the one true king to unite everyone with the hero’s sword, which is a nice deconstruction of the hero trope.
And Tad Cooper…bless. Just bless that dragon.
Favorite Songs: My Dragon Pal and Me; A New Season; Off With His Shirt; The Happiest Day of My Life; Giants vs Dwarves; A Dark Season (super short little ending song, but I adore the “now this season needs a hero” “and he’s on his way” with the main Galavant theme overlaid); Maybe You Won’t Die Alone; As Good As It Gets.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"February 1, 2016 at 11:11 am #315864MatthewPaulModeratorFinale ratings are out. We ended the Season with a 0.6 demo and 2.17 total viewers. We actually got a 0.7 demo for the top 25 market, the first time I’ve seen a noticeable increase for that category. Nice that it did slightly go up, even when against Grease Live, though not as high as it should have been. I will forever question why so many viewers wouldn’t give this amazing show a chance, but I do have to give ABC credit making Season 2 a reality at all. It was a rare moment where a network gave the traditional ratings standards the middle finger, and gave the show another chance. I will keep my fingers crossed for another surprise renewal, but if this is truly the end, I’ll always be incredibly thankful for all the joy this show has given me:

Take note, NBC.
February 2, 2016 at 6:52 pm #315939RumplesGirlKeymasterFrom TVInsider Senior Critic Matt Roush
Question: While it feels like everyone else was watching Grease Sunday night, I chose to watch the Galavant finale in real time. I have loved this show from the beginning, but found its second season even better than the first, with richer characterizations, more focused storytelling and a refreshing willingness to shuffle the deck and place their gifted ensemble in new situations that really felt fresh and exciting in a way that the show it’s filling in for hasn’t been in a long time. (Granted, Once Upon a Time has been on longer and airs a full season every year, but still, it’s hard not to notice that I looked forward to Galavant more, whereas OUAT has become more of an obligation.)
I also think the producers of Galavant were smart to wrap up the finale in the way that they did, giving us satisfying closure in case they aren’t able to evade the cancellation bear again. But there was enough of a foundation laid in the end that I am really excited to see where they go with it next year and what that would look like. I hope they’re given the chance to do that, since I’ve really fallen in love with these characters and would be disappointed if we never get to visit this world again. What do you think ABC’s expectations for the show are? Obviously, they know it is being programmed as filler against heavy-duty event TV in January like football and the Golden Globes (the show itself has made fun of this on a number of occasions), so given the unique conditions under which it has always been aired, where is the bar for the measurement of its success? I’m also kind of afraid that Grease was probably worse competition for it than usual, on account of Galavant going for the exact same audience of musical lovers. — Jake
Matt Roush: Actually, according to ABC, the delightfulGalavant finale grew a bit from the previous week (which wouldn’t be hard, given that it was facing the behemoth of football championship action). But yes, if there ever was an underdog whose praises deserved singing, it’s this one. (Added treat: Here’s a compilation of some of the show’s best and funniest original songs.) I honestly haven’t a clue how ABC as a corporation views this little show that could, except with fondness for its spunky self-deprecation at having actually made it to a surprise second season. It was very smart for the show to end with a real ending this time—and the dragon kicker was especially sweet. Still, it seems likely that ABC will once again need to fill the Once Upon a Time gap next winter, and if it makes business sense to go back to this world, I hope it happens. But given how it’s programmed, with back-to-back episodes and an entire season coming and going within a month, I’m content for now that we got a happily ever after of any sort.
