I am not shipping. I am not shipping. I am not shipping. At all. I don’t care if Galavant ends up with just his horse. .
You can’t resist the powers of the Ship side, they are too strong.

Buffy built up sympathetic heroes and villains with unresolved issues for a long time before layering on the frosting with “Once More, With Feeling”. Galavant just seems like chocolate frosted sugar bombs.
I’ll give it another try in a few days.

I’m glad we’re gonna get a Sid ep. Really liked him and was hoping they’d flesh him out a bit more.
January 10, 2015 at 9:50 am #294612obisgirlParticipantI finally saw the pilot and episode two. The boyfriend and I like it. He already ‘ships King Richard and his bodyguard.
All the songs are really catchy and omg, I had no idea ABC set the main theme of all their shows Sunday night to Galavant’s opening theme. It was rediculous.
I think my two favorite scenes were the training montage from episode and the joust itself.
I like the king and the cook “here comes that catapult!”
Looking forward to the next three weeks and Alan Menken is a god.
January 12, 2015 at 11:28 pm #294665MatthewPaulModerator4 episodes in, and I’m still having a lot of fun with this show. Episode 3 was ok, but might be the weakest episode so far. The plot just wasn’t as compelling, nor were the songs as good. The Jewish humor with Sid’s adoptive parents felt a little flat, especially their “Oy! What a Knight” number. A better use of that type of humor is Spamalot’s “You Won’t Succeed On Broadway If You Don’t Have Any Jews.” Episode 4 was definitely the stronger half of the hour. “Togetherness” is a cute and catchy number. Hugh Bonneville as the Pirate captain was a riot, and I totally dug his crew’s “Lords of the Sea” pirate shanty. I definitely felt some inspiration from the classic Gilbert and Sullivan musical “The Pirates of Penzance.” I’m continuing to love King Richard, while also growing more and more appreciation for the Jester. I felt bad for the Jester when Madalena imprisoned him for refusing to continue sleeping with her.

This is one of the reasons I really enjoy the show, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There are still some more serious moments, like how in ep 3 Galavant had some self realisation and then gave that pep talk to Sid, (sidenote: I loved the gag of Sid collecting “dolls”, this show is good at inserting little things that are more modern references, like fanboys collecting figurines, but making them fit in the medieval fairy tale setting), but overall it’s just a parody and it knows it. For me it’s like a breath of fresh air from Once, which I feel takes itself far too seriously when IMO it’s not at the standard where it can do that any more.

The pirates were hilarious. “We’re Lords of the sea! Just…not of the actual sea.” LOL

I loved that Richard learned the Jester’s name (first AND last), but Madenena had no idea who he was talking about. Is it wrong to ship King Richard and the Jester, because I think I almost did? LOL I don’t really feel sorry for the Jester, you have a sordid affair with the Queen and you get what’s coming to you. I feel increasingly sorry for Richard, having Madelena for a wife. The poor guy, he’s so clueless that when he discovers his wife is having an affair, he goes to get tips from the guy she’s having the affair with. The scene where he was poking at the Jester with the fake sword made me giggle a lot, it came across far funnier than you’d think, (bless Tim Omundson, he is wonderful!).
I have a love/hate situation with Galavant. On the one hand, I love that he defended the “mouth breather”, and he’s obviously really starting to care for Isabella. But then he goes and ignores her when she was confessing to him, and I kinda wanted to slap him. But at least he said he was gonna work on not ignoring her when she speaks. He’s gotta work on the arrogance, but there’s hope for him yet, (and my money is still on him marrying into Valencian royalty).

Exactly. For one, there’s no hardcore shipping drama within the fandom like with OUAT. I also enjoy how simple the plot is, as opposed to how much overload there is with OUAT’s plot.

I see your point. Yeah, it’s looking like Richard is slowly moving away from his role as the show’s antagonist, while Madalena becomes more and more the true antagonist of the show. I wouldn’t be surprised if he and Galavant end up becoming allies, which would be ultimately ironic.
I have to give a lot of props to the cast for being so friendly and interactive with the fanbase on Twitter. Karen David (Isabella) and Timothy Omundson (King Richard) are especially responsive. The whole cast is really into the show, and are very appreciative of the support it gets. Granted I know ABC obviously pays the cast to livetweet during the show, but even when the show’s not airing they’ll take the time to interact. It’s a shame the ratings took a dive last Sunday, no thanks to the Golden Globe Awards, as a 2nd Season of this seems unlikely if ratings continue to decrease for this week and its final week. A musical comedy like this is also a tough sell for a lot of casual TV audiences, unfortunately.
January 19, 2015 at 1:01 am #294800MatthewPaulModeratorThis week’s group of episodes were lots of fun. Starting with the songs, the highlights for me were Madalena’s narcissistic number “No One But You”, the twisted tango number “I Love You” between Madalena and Galavant, and the touching “Love is Strange” between Galavant and Isabella. Loved Weird Al’s catchy “We’re the Monks” song, though I wish Weird Al had more screentime than he was given. Ricky Jervais as Xanax the Magician led to some clever humor (“Xanax can help anything”), and a trippy 70ish song. The “Love is Strange” duet was a moment of rejoicing for Galabella fans, and it was nice to finally see Galavant come to terms to the reality that Madalena never truly loved him. I will say Madalena makes for a great villain. She’s a manipulative little witch who will do whatever it takes to get what she wants. Plus, Mallory Jansen is clearly having a blast play her. I liked getting to see some of Richard’s backstory. Richard’s brother, Kingsley, truly is a tool, and I loved how they even showed us a young Gareth. Chef got to shine in both of these episodes, too. Chef’s romance with Madalena’s hand maiden was cute, and I enjoyed how Chef accompanied Richard to see Xanax. It’s sad that next week is the Season, possibly even Series finale. I’m certainly going to miss this show.
