I remember seeing something like that too RG. I think they always have a plan and then they see how things are working or aren’t and that was early enough to say wow ok he can do something awesome with this and maybe start writing more and more for him. They wanted Hook around in S1 but then didn’t get him so as much as they pushed to include him, it could have been in a slightly lesser capacity until they saw how incredible it was going to be and knew they had something.

May 14, 2013 at 6:26 pm #194306RumplesGirlKeymasterThe trick of S3 will be figuring out how to focus on each of the regular characters to develop them emotionally while introducing RELEVANT (no Jack’s OK!) background characters. Once they take out GOAT, they can flesh out PP, for example. Don’t give me lots of new characters that are only around for one episode just because you can.

However, they got too excited at the idea with Neverland, so they wrapped up her storyline earlier and introduced us to Greg/Tamara as the new threat. The Miller’s Daughter did very much feel like a Season finale, though not as epic as the Season finale we actually got. This makes sense if they really did plan to keep Emma and Snow in FTL a little longer at first. Greg, Tamara, and Neverland could have been introduced at the start of Season 3. With a better layout for Season 3 planned out, I have high hopes that it will be way less clunkier than Season 2 was.

Meghan said in an interview recently that she won’t be a regular next Season because of her new show, but is open to doing guest appearances at least “once a year.” She also added that they had initially planned to have Red/Ruby do more this past Season, but because of Neverland and the other busy storylines taking priority they simply couldn’t fit her in. Apparently Snow and Emma were going to be stuck in FTL a little longer, and Red was going to have a little more screentime. That sounds like being downgraded from a regular to me.
Also glad that they didn’t overextend Emma and Snow in FTL. I’ve always felt that they did and paced the first half of the season well enough, the only exception being the squid ink MacGuffin – they go all that trouble to find it to defeat Cora, but in the end it plays no role in that? Come on! -, but the second half was just too crammed with storylines that some plot points were inevitable done poorly: Archie’s “murder”, Pinocchio”s death and ressurection, Belle’s regaining of her memories, among others.

You’re not alone. I’ve always felt they crammed two seasons in one starting with “The Cricket Game”. And while I agree that their Neverland concept seems to be absolutely awesome, it could’ve waited a bit to happen.

If the first half was rather slow, the second half took off like a rocket that occasionally tried to fall back into orbit (I loved S2 but there were times when I couldn’t catch my breath and then when they tried to slow down it was for an episode like S,B and T)

I think one of the other issues I remember hearing about was that Barbara Hershey didn’t want to be a regular. That meant wrapping up her storyline earlier than expected as well. I don’t think she minds coming back from time to time for a flashback here and there (and I’m sure we’ll see her on OUATIW sometime too) but she didn’t want to end up in a situation where she wasn’t getting as much storyline and not able to go anywhere else either I’m sure.
There are a lot of factors that could have changed the direction early on in the season and I too hope S3 is a bit more put together but I am super excited for Neverland!
Parts of season 2 dragged a little for me and I’ll be curious to see on rewatch how I feel about certain episodes. I think the biggest problem was the breaks and then coming back to not super spectacular stuff and/or heading into a break with that. Last year 15+ were amazing and this year it kinda dragged for me in the middle there and didn’t really hit it’s finale-run stride until literally part 1 of the finale! However the last 2 eps were amazing (especially the finale!) and I think they’re in a good groove now so things should be looking up, especially with the better scheduling.

I think that was just a rumor, wasn’t it? It came about because many were confused at her story being concluded in 2×16 rather than the season finale since she was being portrayed as this Big Bad.
Regular status doesn’t mean anything, honestly; both Raphael Sbarge and Meghan Ory were in this show and they were barely used in their seasons, while Claire Holt has never been one in Vampire Diaries and she had more of a storyline than several regulars in that show. What being a regular really brings is a name in the cast credits and more or less guaranteed wage even if you’re not featured in an episode or several.

I’m hoping that with the exception of MRJ–who makes total sense in the overall story–our cast is pretty much set for future seasons. From here on out, which land we happen to be in, the new characters should be guest stars who are relevant to the main characters storyline.

Agreed. I think after season 3 with it being split and most of the focus being on the NL group since that’s where most of them are that MRJ will join the cast full-time and that should be the core group for the rest of the run with as many of the other characters we know and love popping in from time to time in and around their busy schedules. It’s nice to see so many of them do well but it’s hard on fans and it can’t be easy for the writers who I’m sure would love to have them around all the time but just can’t.

I agree completely.
Before the finale aired I feared a bit they’d promote Ethan Embry to regular status for the sake of the HO storyline, but since Tamara didn’t die and they already linked the HO to a much more dense character, Peter Pan, I guess we’ve dodged that bullet.
