ABC Family — soon to become Freeform — is looking for a little Once Upon a Time Magic.
The Disney-owned network is teaming with the creators of ABC’s fantasy drama for anthology Dead of Summer, the cabler’s first horror series.
The drama, which has been picked up straight to series based on multiple script commitments, will be written by OUAT’s Adam Horowitz, Eddy Kitsis and Ian Goldberg, the latter of whom will reunite with the showrunners for ABC Family’s first-ever horror series. The drama, created by Kitsis and Horowitz who brought Goldberg in to help, hails from ABC Signature Studios, ABC Studios’ low-cost, cable-focused arm.
“Dead of Summer is about what happens when summer camp goes wrong – really, really wrong,” ABC Family exec vp programming Karey Burke said in a statement announcing the news Wednesday. “The horror genre is new for us and I’m thrilled to have Adam, Eddy and Ian bring their immeasurable talent to our network and usher us into this new space.”

It has nothing to do with OUAT ending, but it might be worth noting that A and E have split their time before (OUATinWL) and the last time that happened it was during the NL/Oz arc. Opinions will vary about whether or not A and E can effectively split their time/effort/writing between OUAT and another project.

They also split their time working on Tron: Uprising during the same time as OUAT Seasons 1 and 2. Granted that was an animated series, but still another show no less. It should be noted that the EW article states that Ian Goldberg will be the main showrunner for this show, indicating that Adam and Eddy won’t be as heavily occupied compared to OUAT.

I think I will give this show a try. Obviously it’ll be no American Horror Story… Probably not even a Goosebumps, and the fact that its coming on ABC family sounds like it’ll be some teeny bopper but *shrug* I might like it. I was sure I wouldn’t like OUAT until I actually watched it and look at me now. Perhaps this will be my next obsession.

I won’t watch it. I will stick with Once until the end (I can’t abandon RG) but I will not watch another K/H production. I made the same vow about Ryan Murphy and I’ve kept it. No matter how intriguing future plots may be.
Plus, I don’t like the horror genre so that’s a second strike against it. So no for me.
