I feel like I still don’t know Joel as a character even after this flashback. He never once came off as having visions or perhaps some sort of psychosis. A flashback is supposed to help me understand the character more but I feel like they shoved a random “issue” on to Joel so they could do something with Joel in the present day. For example, Cricket’s insecurities and need for validation from Alex made sense once we saw her flashback. Even Alex’s hyper-all-American-boy shtick made sense once we saw who he really was. For Joel, he says that the camera is the only way he could tell what’s real or not, but in the flashback we saw that he was interested in film making and recording everything around him before his brother died and before Joel himself saw the Tall Man. I just feel like I have nothing to latch on to when it comes to Joel. He’s not actually crazy since Holyoak is real so….what else is there for him?
100% agree with all of this. And what on earth is up with Deb? Is she being consumed by whatever evil this is just like Amy was? Because like Deb, Amy didn’t remember kissing young cop guy. Or was it all in Joel’s mind? We know he thought he saw Deb basically strip for him in the window when in fact that wasn’t the case and she covered up immediately. Like I still don’t quite understand why Elizabeth Mitchell would go for this part. She has yet to be integral to the story other than the fact that she had one of those masks. I really sincerely hope she’s aware of what’s going on and is very much behind this. Hopefully she gets a flashback soon.
We also still need to get a Blair flashback. Because of the way the story has been unfolding, it does make certain characters seem intriguing because we know the end game is near so whoever hasn’t gotten a flashback must be pretty damn important to how all this ends. So here’s to hoping people like Blair, and Deb, and Jesse, and Garrett are important to how this all shakes out. I’m also interested in knowing why only certain people have been able to see the tall man. Gotta be a reason.
But still my biggest problem with this show is WHY. Why is the tall man trying to kill Amy? Why is he haunting people in the first place? What is his motivation? I get they are keeping things close to the chest still, but I guess it’s just the way that the story is unfolding that has me quite puzzled as to WHY all this stuff is even happening in the first place.

I think Deb is faking not remembering personally.

All of that.

–I don’t understand. Outside of the obvious extra textual LOST reference, why did Keith and Deb call themselves the Dharma Bums??
–Ouija scene was actually pretty cool. Amy is far more interesting possessed by a spirit than her normal utterly bland self.
–Did Keith REALLY just vanish into a puff of smoke. Oooof. Heavy handed much?
–It seemed pretty obvious Keith was dead in present day (wearing the same clothes is always a dead give away, pun intended) but Deb’s overall story is both interesting and not. Okay, so it’s not wholly about a guy (but close enough and even then it’s a guy/romantic other who gives her direction instead of her controlling her own story/destiny) but supposedly, Deb’s story is about her finally becoming what she’s supposed to be…which is what exactly? Like what is she supposed to be? How is helping these kids fulfilling some sort of destiny or mission? We might know why she reopened Camp Stillwater now but we’re no closer to learning anything mythologically important about whatever the heck is going on.
–Who’s in the mask and helping the bad guys? It seems fairly obvious it’s going to be a Counselor but which one? Not Jessie since she was with Garret at the time. Possessed!Amy has my vote.

Probably has more to do with the actual book than as a LOST reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dharma_Bums

My guess is the sheriff played by Charles Mesure. In the behind the scenes segment at the end of the episode, Ian Goldberg says if you pay attention to the masked ball flashback at the very beginning of the episode, one of them is wearing one of the masks we’ve been seeing. They also seem to be wearing the same type of shirt as the sheriff. The sheriff also seems like the type of guy who’s been a “townie” for quite some time. He’s also been very stand-offish with Garrett’s investigations.

Ahhhh. See I could never see the title of the book whenever Deb held it up. That makes more sense.

Maybe. Not sure how I feel about that given that he’s had no development, no connection to anything except as Garrett’s superior.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"August 3, 2016 at 3:27 pm #326331thedarkonedearieParticipantWell it’s gotta be someone who we have not gotten a backstory for. Or it’s Deb bc as RG said, we still don’t really know what her purpose is. So considering next episode is called “Townie,” my guess is we will get Garrett’s backstory. And there’s no way he’s the masked man. And as RG said, Jessie was with Garrett so could it really be her? For me, it’s down to Deb, Jessie, Blair, and the old sheriff guy. I say no to sheriff guy bc he was like completely irrelevant and not developed even a little. Blair we have yet to get a backstory on, and likely won’t next week either, so his will come near the end, so that makes me think it could be him. But based on his behavior and his actions/reactions, I just don’t think it would make much sense. A possessed Amy seems too easy. I think they are going to go with a big reveal with this one.
So that leaves me with Deb and Jessie. I think ultimately, Deb knows more about what’s going on (bc how is she ok with just seeing her old flame disappear into the misty water). Side note: she knew he died. Why was she acting like he was alive? Or did she know? She didn’t seem super surprised to see him, as if she knew she might see him eventually since there are ghosts at this place. And did she have sex with a ghost? Uhhh, so weird. But she knows more, but ultimately I think she’s one of the good guys. Which brings it to Jessie. Yes, Jessie was with Garrett. But I think she moved the body already prior to this episode. And just her overall demeanor and attitude make me think she is the one. Plus no backstory for her yet either so there’s that.
Overall, decent episode. But I was a little disappointed that they are keeping Deb’s knowledge about everything still close to the chest. I mean, at the end of the day, the woman did have the mask in her closet.
And who will the final victim be? I would be very disappointed if after all this, we never get the demon unleashed. So I’m guessing one more is going to get the ax.
Oh and just thought of another possible person, since Garrett’s father is involved. Could the masked person be his mom?
August 3, 2016 at 5:19 pm #326338MatthewPaulModeratorMaybe. Not sure how I feel about that given that he’s had no development, no connection to anything except as Garrett’s superior.
The video I brought up earlier. Watch what Ian Goldberg talks about at the end:

Another thing I realized is that Charles Mesure was credited for this episode, and yet we never saw him. Or so we think?

If it is really his character, then I suspect he has a backstory that we have yet to explore.
August 3, 2016 at 5:39 pm #326340RumplesGirlKeymasterYeah….I still feel like it would be a “big” reveal but not really a big reveal given that he’s been on the periphery at best. I mean, after watching the video it’s probably the Sheriff Guy but wow is that a let down.
So we have 4 episodes left and we need centrics for Blair, Jessie, Garret and I guess the Sheriff will likely factor into the final flashback to “explain it all” for the audience.
I mean, at the end of the day, the woman did have the mask in her closet.
Yeah exactly. It’s like the writers knew we’d think it was Deb and decided to lead you down that rabbit hole only to then do a 180 and go “no! it was this guy that none of you even guessed because of how non existent he was! muahaha!”
Given Eddy and Adam’s recent comments about needing to change things once the audience starts guessing correctly over on OUAT, I guess I’m not surprised.

Just thinking A&E might go for something similar as a nod to the film.

–I rolled my eyes during most of this episode
–Why is anyone doing anything?? I mean that seriously. Damon is “powerless” so he joins a cult to get power (that ends in a ritual suicide!) But that simplifies to an absurd extent why people feel called to join some sort of religion, cult, spiritual movement. We never got any insight to Damon whatsoever except “bad guy” and a vague throwaway line about his father not being around as if that paltry excuse is supposed to inform my understanding of his character. And Boyd….is doing all this….because? Seriously what was his motivation for anything? Why is he the Teacher? How did he learn any of this? Why was he drawn to it?
–Amy cuts herself to the extent that the tiny stream the masked men were wadding in was full of her blood. And she didn’t die or pass out. That’s not how the human body works?
–I am very confused on the how this cave works. There’s a little wadding stream, but Amy fell into a giant lake that is deep enough to house a demon/hand/thing? And of course they had a rope pully. I’m sure that’s a natural formation of the cave.
–Did they order Amy to put on her pretty white gown? How does the white gown help?
–Oh shock. The Older Cop is the Teacher. Apparently his name was Boyd. I actually didn’t know that since his screen time has been minimal and his influence on the narrative has been non existent.
–Blair and Drew were the only really good thing about this episode.
–“You want to bring violent criminals into a camp…with kids?” Holy crap, someone remembered there are kids at this camp.
