Which is rather shocking because while Anna could grate on my nerves, Lail was really great in the role. But she’s hard to watch here.
I’m not sure how much I’d blame it on Lail’s acting, or how much I’d blame it on the script and character that she was given. Maybe it also has to do with Lail still being a new TV actress? I know OUAT was her first ever TV role, and she was fresh from graduating college at the time.
Oh the scripts don’t help at all. She’s been asked to scream a lot so far.

–The mythology is getting a bit more interesting. I like that they brought in the real spiritual movement that took place in the late 1800s-early 1900s around New York and the Great Lakes.
–But the characters are SO BORING. Like, I have no sympathy for any of them and they just drag everything around them down.
–Good lord, but this show does not need more romance. How many pairings does one show need??
–Amy screamed at a tetherball and then got struck by lightening later. I found that funny.

I too want to learn more about the Tall Man and his cult. They’re the most intriguing thing this show has to offer thus far. BTW, the Tall Man is played by horror icon Tony Todd, who is best known for the Candy Man and Final Destination films. Looks like Deb (Elizabeth Mitchell’s character) definitely has a connection to them, as she has one of their masks. Speaking of Deb, am I the only one who finds the flirting between her and Joel very odd? I could understand Joel having a one-sided crush on her, but that doesn’t seem to be what’s going on here. Drew is still the counselor that I want to learn more about, though I’m nervous how his backstory will be depicted, given the subject matter. As for Amy, part of me can’t help but think “could she really be dead?” 3 episodes in seems a tad too early to kill off a regular, so I largely doubt it. Even Graham on OUAT had at least 7 episodes before he got axed.

2) Deb’s flirting with Joel is extremely weird.
3) I’m really worried about their story of Drew too. So far the flashbacks have been inoffensive but nothing earth shattering.

How annoying is the one from Ugly Betty?
From the sounds of it the characters are such a drag that when the killings inevitably start, you’re going to be rooting for the killer.

1) He’s transgender
2) That answer hasn’t changed since you asked last week. I don’t really find him annoying at all. He’s all manner of cliche but I found his friendship with Cricket to kinda nice.
3) They really haven’t given us much time or space to actually care about the characters is the problem. Which is an issue of writing but also the fact that it’s only a 10 episode summer series that has to tell a complete story of the mystery of Camp Stillwater.

There are horror films that manage to make you care about characters in a 90-120 minutes runtime so a 10-episode series should be able to do it.

July 13, 2016 at 4:26 pm #325499thedarkonedearieParticipantYeah I don’t really care about the characters either, although I once again enjoyed the flashbacks in this episode. The dialogue writing seems super clunky and I feel bad for some of the actors. The mythology part is the biggest thing this show has going for it. Was that actually blotter at the bottom of the lake?

I guess. I see your point though there are some other factor like a horror movie has a certain atmosphere that a teen slasher show can’t convey; horror movies are viewed in one sitting and not spread out with different characters getting a focus each week. Also, horror movies tend to be actually scary. Dead of Summer isn’t in any way scary, though people have died already. It’s rather predictable to the point that even if the characters are in real danger and the stakes are high, you see the danger coming a mile away and already know it’ll be rather mild and watered down.
Maybe if the characters on the show were more nuanced we’d be more able to sympathize with them quickly. Like Cricket, center of this week’s episode….I have a lot in common with her in broad strokes but if she had died last night, I’d shrug and say “well, that’s what you get for jumping into a car with a total stranger who reeks of bad news.” Or Blair, for instance. His leading characteristic so far is that he’s flamboyantly gay and there’s nothing wrong with that but the writers, thus far, act like it’s all that defines him, there’s nothing else about him except his sexuality. Which is why I am *seriously* worried about what they do with Drew next week.
On another note, I still find Elizabeth Lail to be pretty dang annoying. There’s this presence to her on screen in this show that is so simpering and demure and meek. The guilt trip with the cookies she gave to Jessie was the first time she had any sort of personality.
